This is the movie I'm most looking forward to this summer, but I wonder if it'll hit differently than it is meant to if you are in the camp that finds our use of the bombs against Japan fully justified. If the movie was made expressly to condemn their use against fascist Japan, it's going to be spectacular but also misleading.

I'm basically levitating at how incredible and unprecedented the next week-and-a-half of movie going is about to be.

With *this* movie, after *these* reactions, as my number one anticipated (among Dead Reckoning and Barbie).

LFG.

My guess is it walks a fine line. Horrifying and world-changing, but also necessary, at least in the moment.

I hope Oppenheimer is as good as it is should be. Asteroid City was mediocre, as was IJ. I can't figure out what Barbie is going for or if I'll enjoy it, and MI is always fun but rarely wows me.

Yeah, I'm hoping it's mostly just an engrossing look at what happened and how it happened and not stretching the truth of how it was perceived at the moment. Modern people with a lack of historical background on Japan's ideology and many horrific crimes give them far too much sympathy.

If it is truly "Nolan's JFK" that confirms my fear stated above.

Nolan has said that the color footage is told from Oppenheimer's perspective, while the black-and-white footage is told from other individuals' perspective, after the fact. That's why I think we get both arguments here. I don't think it's just going to be a one dimensional "nukes bad" kind of thing.

It's just hard to preach on this issue without providing context. Is it a) Japan terrorized the Pacific for over a decade, committing truly unspeakable acts against millions, with a regime that refused to surrender even when in an unwinnable war or b) Japan was in a war against the US and the US chose to nuke civilians for funsies.

"I have been told that we have recovered technology that did not originate on this".-Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence-Chris Mellon

“Behind the scenes, high-ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe that unknown flying objects are nonsense.” Former CIA Director, Roscoe Hillenkoetter, public statement, 1960.

Quote:

We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says, "Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." I suppose we all thought that one way or another.

Im ready for this movie.

AMC Gulf Pointe 30 has a 70mm showing, just not IMAX. That would be my recommendation.

Just some background info on the subject..

He has a history of posting UFO stuff all over the board, in the most forced/awkward ways possible. And I created a thread specifically for UFO stuff, partly out of an effort to keep all of his stuff focused to one place. That's all I'm saying. Also, I'm hardly the first to complain.

You made a full ass thread to keep this guy hemmed in?

No. Hence my use of the word "partly." As in, I did it mainly for my own interests, but also so we could talk about his stuff in a dedicated thread.

Unfortunately it's probably going to be the exact opposite. A quiet moment during one of the 40 times that the camera is panning in on Oppenheimer realizing that he's working on a big ass bomb and that militaries like to use big ass bombs on targets and you're suddenly gonna hear that damn Ken ballad thumping through the wall.

This isn't a F16 response. I'm very glad to hear this, because this story doesn't focus around women. If they're trying to tell an accurate story, it shouldn't serve the actress roles.

Agreed. What's even weirder is that one of the other reactions says Blunt gets her time to shine in the third act, and then multiple reactions say Pugh knocks her scenes out of the park, and certainly makes an impression. So this dude just seems like he's virtue signaling to me.

Also, there should be some time devoted to the morality of dropping an atomic bomb because that is a big part of the Manhattan Project, and even Truman. It's cheap and easy to say "America, **** yeah," but this was a truly historic decision that has not been made since. Truman often had to justify the decision, it's a part of the story.
TCTTS

I think a lot of that stuff comes in the black-and-white footage, spliced throughout the movie.
Cliff.Booth
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It definitely is part of the story, but I hope the movie helps reinforce why the decision made was the best decision and doesn't try to pander to "America is the villain" Hollywood tendency.

Oppenheimer himself seems to be making that argument in the trailers. The pushback will of course come from the suits in the black-and-white footage, and those warning Oppenheimer in the lead up to the first destination, but I don't see the "pro-bomb" POV being absent from the movie. There's also the scene from the trailer of a general saying something like, "We can end the war and our boys will come home," as if he's pro-bomb, not to mention Damon's character likely/ultimately being pro-bomb as well. In other words, there's no way that side isn't heard loud and clear. I just think in the end, like some Nolan movies, it's not going to come down on one side or the other. It'll be left up to the audience to decide.
