That is because nolan probably figured out time travel and the movie is set in the actual 40s.
Sounds like you've been incepted, sleep on any planes recently?

Seeing some speculation that we could be getting an Oppenheimer prologue of sorts with IMAX showings of Avatar: The Way of Water next month, considering every big, summer Nolan release for the past decade has had one attached to whatever the big December blockbuster was the year prior. We're almost assuredly getting a new trailer next month, at this point the only question is about the prologue. Hopefully we get official word here in the next two or three weeks...

Next Thursday is also obviously the day Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters, which I'm guessing/hoping isn't a coincidence, and that a mini Oppenheimer marketing campaign is about to kick off with a new trailer as well. Still no word on an IMAX prologue yet, but hopefully that's coming too...

Damn, seems they shot this in black and white. Disappointed honestly, that explosion would've been spectacular.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like the non-IMAX version of the trailer *will* make its way online…

Maybe it's just me being glass half full, but I think a doomsday explosion in black and white has the potential to be really really impactful.
It's also possible knowing Nolan that he chooses to make that one scene in color for emphasis.

I could be wrong, but it seems like only some of the film is in black and white, not all of it.

Cool poster:

I kind of wonder if he will have the bomb be the first color scene in the movie followed by the rest of the movie indicating the start nuclear/modern era. -Edit I noticed I made the same comment months ago in this thread, I'll leave this up to accept my shame.

I can see the only color be the explosion and the light given off by it.

I'm hoping 2-3rds of the way through the movie, Oppenheimer goes crazy and plans to detonate the a-bomb over Washington DC, and RDJ has to turn into Ironman to stop him.

I imagine it will be something similar to Momento, where there are several different time periods of events happening, and some time periods will be black and white, some in color, etc. to kind of help the audience know whats going on. Its Nolan, so I'm assuming a straightforward linear story is not happening in this movie.

A bootleg of part of the trailer, in a foreign language, which at least tells us A) it's going to be (mostly) in color, and that B) even in such crappy quality, the final product is going to be absolutely stunning…

Calling my shot -- the film starts off in B&W and turns to color the second the explosion goes off, and remains in color the rest of the movie.

I assume you're avoiding the bootleg trailer above, but again, 95% of it's in color, and 95% of it looks to be before the first explosion. Since we know the movie spans 45 years of his life, current speculation is that the main timeline is in color (the vast majority of the movie), while any flashbacks might be in black and white. Something along those lines.

Why would I watch a bootleg when the trailer literally drops in theaters in a matter of hours. And in IMAX no less.
TCTTS

That's why I said "I assume." But considering yesterday I already mentioned that basically the whole thing was in color, I was assuming you missed that post as well. Hence my follow up.

I mean if this was a traditional biopic, id say the "main story" is going to be the hearings and that would be in black and white, and all flashbacks to his career before then would be in color. But this is Nolan and that feels too formulaic for him, so who knows.

Yeah, knowing Nolan, it could very well have something to do with the layers of an atomic nucleus or whatever, and how in some states it's colorful and in others it's not. Some crazy meta thing like that (which I completely made up, for the record).

Also, if reports are correct, just a reminder that the trailer in the bootleg links is the regular/standard, non-IMAX version of the trailer that should be officially online any day now. And whatever is playing in IMAX theaters, starting this evening, is either an expanded version of that trailer, or something altogether different, that likely won't ever be released online.

This was great in the IMAX. Loud as all hell.

Definitely not what was shown in IMAX. That looks like a highlight reel of what I saw, and with music over it.

Btw, I've grown to love this tradition of every two or three years hunting down the bootlegs of Nolan trailers, the day they debut in theaters, seeing as Nolan refuses to release his trailers online ahead of time. I know it's not for everyone, but I find it so fun to then try to making out certain shots or dialogue in some sh*tty, cell-phone-filmed copy, until I finally see it in glorious IMAX, or the real deal officially drops a few days later. There's a rare, underground, first-hit, max-hype quality to the whole endeavor I just can't get enough of.
TCTTS

So the IMAX version is like an extended cut of the trailer, essentially? That's kind of what I was assuming if so.

I might be wrong. A lot of the shots are the same. But I'm almost sure the version I saw was at least 2-3 minutes.
