Image was released to announce that principal photography has officially commenced.

Also, Kenneth Branagh has joined the cast...

Is it just me, or is the cigarette CGI?

Now that we know they've officially started filming, one thing I'm slightly confused about is the scale of this thing in terms of action/CGI. I can totally picture the dramatic thriller version, but it's mostly just people in interior locations - rooms and labs and hallways - stressed and arguing and being covert. What I can't quite picture, though, is the version of this movie that needs *more* production/post-production time than Nolan's effects-heavy action epics like The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Tenet, all of which (originally) had July release dates as well, but didn't start filming until spring of the previous year (roughly May-ish). Throwing in Interstellar and Dunkirk as well, no Nolan film has started filming *this* far out from its release date, and it's not even close, really.

So, I'm wondering what this movie is, exactly, if there are all kinds of massive war scenes as well or what? Because the only other explanation I can think of is that with names this big, and a cast this size, it's more of a scheduling issue, and Nolan simply needed to start this early to accommodate the actors' busy schedules/other projects.

Anyone slated to play Captain Tibbets?

To my knowledge, no one so far has been announced as playing pilots, soldiers, etc. Anyone who has been named in a specific role is playing someone in Oppenheimer's general orbit. Now, granted, we don't know who some of the "lesser" names are playing, and someone like Alden Ehrenreich could certainly fit a pilot/Tibbets-type role. But all indications so far are that this is focused on Oppenheimer himself, his circle and those above him, and not necessary the war at large, or even the prep at Tinian, etc. That said, who knows what Nolan has up his sleeve…

I suppose he could book-end the movie with war stuff to drive home the entire point of developing the A-bomb, which could include the actual delivery of the bomb. Otherwise, this feels like a retelling of Fat Man & Little Boy (which, frankly, I found to be a fairly dull movie back when it came out).

not sure if this would bein conformance with morality-

but Nolan should send a commando film team into Ukraine right now and film in every major city that has been hit to get "real" shots of blasted buildings

Well I knew I should have looked up his actual ranking at the time of the bombing.

Be careful, there are some on the Batman thread who give off vibes that they would dox him on this.

Found the set. Shooting under the initials "GF." A store front in Sierra Madre (next to Pasadena). Really cool little throwback town square area with all kinds shops and restaurants. Ha, I had no idea this was even here. I dig this area. No shooting yet, though. Looks like only prep so far.

Go get a fake ID that says your name is Klaus Oppenheimer and you're here on the behalf of your great-grandfather's estate to make sure they are being historically accurate.

Already left, but it's super boring right now. It's literally just an old-looking store front and they're prepping the windows. No camera crews or anything yet, just set prep. My friend who tipped me off, who's working on it, said it's for a grocery store. Said they're filming all over the area for the next few days, though. I totally get the appeal of the area too. Definitely a mid-century vibe with old-looking shops/restaurants, craftsman houses nearby, beautiful mountains in the background, etc.

May come back in a couple days and see if I can catch any actual filming. Seems super easy to just stand on the other side of the street and watch.
