I actually agree with the idea that this is what they were wrestling with, but it would have made more sense if they didn't try to pass them off as Lutheran. Then again, with the Lutheran church these days, maybe they're on to something.

the lutheran they are speaking of is universalist, so it actually makes even less sense.

all I'm trying to say is that I think they could have written it in a way that made sense and played those factors without ignoring basic Christianity. the idea of the Church having an official position of having a soul is great and wrestling with that is awesome, but in SO much media, it feels like the writers went to one Sunday school class as a kid and decided that was enough so they are just intent of coloring Christianity and heaven as a merit based system and it's a huge pet peeve of mine.

People with different beliefs or even misunderstandings of their own faith are certainly out there.

Just finished season 2, gonna have to go back and few pages and catch up on this thread. Lot to digest. Such a ****ing great show.

As far as the Lutheran comments right above me, is it possible that the eagan family has infected local churches?

I hope this gets a million seasons and everything is wrapped up, but if not i wouldn't mind an online published history of the eagan family or something like that. Maybe with notes in the margin explaining motives and hopeful outcomes

As a Lutheran… it greatly depends on the branch of Lutheran we're talking about.

Don't lump all of us Lutherans together. We're not all ELCA nutbags.

I had a similar thought about the forgiveness discussion, but I chalked that up to a) lots of people who even consider themselves Christian that don't understand the concept and b) no telling what the influence of the Egans/Lumon has done to society in this alternate timeline.

well, it sounds like this conversation happened 12 years ago when severance was a brand new concept.

(didn't know so many fellow lcms folk were hanging out lol)

so churches would have absolutely had opinions and an ELCA church would likely side with lumen in this progressive way (especially in a town where everyone in employed by Lumen)

the concept they were going for is great, just missing a key component of faith. Easily solved by the spouse saying "I tried to explain that he was forgiven but he never quite felt sure in his salvation, so he took this route" or something.

how a theological debate would really unfold in the early days of severance is really interesting.

I can say I'd approach it with a strong "nope not touching that. tooo many wierd questions and I don't trust anybody enough with this sort of morally grey wierdness"

Ha, apologies. I'm just a year behind you. Honestly, I haven't known many Lutherans, if any. In fact, the only exposure to the denomination I can think of prior to Severance is Amy Adam's' character's family in Catch Me If You Can. Martin Sheen plays her dad, and they make a whole thing of him being a big Lutheran (along with DiCaprio's character, who's pretending to be). So I think that's where my "old" association comes from - an old man character in a movie that takes place in the '60s.

I was shocked to find out Miss Huang is played by a college student. I literally thought the actress was a child.

so for next season, is Gemma going to be outside working with Devon to try to get Mark S out while Mark Scout is battling with his innie?

I'm really excited to see Dichen in a bigger role if so.

Remember that Mark has started reintegrating. I bet there are times he will cut back and forth between them while in Lumon

Just finished season 2. Such a fun weird show. Love it!

I assume it's probably already been mentioned before in this thread, and probably the MCU one, but Disney should have been on the phone yesterday to get Tramell Tillman to play Kang the Conqueror. He is fantastic!

Or perhaps you know more than you realize, but we just don't feel the need to wear it on our sleeve like so many other sects of Christianity.

This is getting pretty nerdy but super interesting if you're curious about what they're doing subliminally in the show, as a designer I'd picked up on several of these and they're incredibly well done.

Like a lot of people I stumbled onto Severance late. I finally got around to watching For All Mankind (Seasons 1-2, among my favorite TV shows ever) and Severance started showing up as what I should watch next

The night the last episode of FAM Season 4 finished, Severance auto-played and am I ever glad it did. Been going through a really rough time of life lately, and it's been a great distraction. I have a lot of pages of discussion to read, but as a former office grunt under some terrible bosses, there have been few things more satisfying than watching Irving and Dylan drop eff bomb on Mr. Milkshake, especially Irving seemingly out of nowhere in Season 1. Without going personal or too dark, then you get long in the tooth in a crappy work situation and finally have your day in the sun to GTFO, it definitely feels like this.

late to the game but finished season 2 tonight and maybe I'm just dumb but S2 finale was one of the weirdest most bizarre tv episodes i've ever seen. feels like the show creators had a decent idea but then used mushrooms and acid combined and went hey, let's execute on that…

ideally reintegration allows the innie and outie to exist as one so thats likely the goal and where the show is headed
