He's a decent actor, just not memorable. For instance, in Outlaw King, Aaron Taylor Johnson stole so much of the spotlight. Even the English king was more magnetic. I just quickly stopped caring much about Chris Pine's journey to reclaim Scotland, and felt his companions were more compelling. It felt like Chris was more along for the ride.

Speaking of which, I'd love to see Rory McCann as William Wallace in a movie from this period (but with Wallace as a more background character). Would love nothing more than to see his big solemn ass just cleaving through tin cans.

To the surprise of no one, I played a lot of d&d growing up in the 1980s, to the point that I referenced it in an eulogy at a friend's funeral last summer. It was everything a lot of us wanted in life at that age, adventure and swords and monsters and a free-flowing experience with very few "walls." My brother and I were at a comic book store in Houston about 10 years ago and discovered two of our favorite modules, keep on the borderlands and white plume mountain, and felt like we had won the lottery.

Part of me really hopes this does well because there is so much boardgame IP that could be made into movies its not even funny. So much untapped potential there.

Have you ever seen or heard anyone in the history of this board say "I was not going to see it, but since it has Chris Pine maybe I will"?
Or even say "wow, CP was awesome in that!"
I don't dislike him, I don't avoid his stuff, but he's just got zero gravitas for me, and little range relative to other big name actors. And I'm quite sure I am far from alone in that view.

Ha, yes, I have! He's a good actor, with a ton of charisma. I've literally never heard anyone refer to him as having zero gravitas or being bland or whatever. I mean, there's a reason Quentin Tarantino is on the record multiple times as saying he really wants to work with Pine. The dude gushes over him. Is Pine ever going to be an awards darling or win an Oscar? Probably not. But he can absolutely carry a blockbuster. I've just always thought he was great, and seemingly game for anything.

Even Jeff Bridges wanted to kill Pine by the end of Hell or High Water.

The first thing I thought of from the posts on the first page was his character from Horrible Bosses 2.

Pine just seems like a dude that can play just about any character.

As he lays in bed, postcoital with a supermodel, Pine is probably thinking, "With the obscene amount of money I just made, for three months of work on that Dungeons & Dragons movie, where should I buy my fourth home? And how many cars should I keep there?"

"I hope the internet message boards are kind to me after they see this film," He says as he requests another bottle of Dom from the help.
"Man I really hope washed up pasty old men with tubby wives aren't throwin shade online", he pouts, as he sips cocktails with a hot tub full of chicks, overlooking the LA skyline.

To each their own as always., but clearly I meant outside of you, since you were quick to defend him.
I will say it was bad enough for me with him that when I found out ( some time around black widow) that he went to Cal, I was shocked. He just always comes off as "there" to me. Not particularly bright or deep.
Like I said, I don't dislike him at all, he just kinda falls into that "whatever"category. He won't ever move the needle on whether I see a film or don't.

It's so weird to see D&D movies. The fun part of D&D is making everything up as you go along. Collaborative storytelling is the buzz word. I'd rather play D&D then watch other people play, and I'd rather watch other people play than watch a movie. Without people making random choices and driving the story in weird directions it would just be another generic fantasy movie.

It can be great when people play and then visual effects are built around the game. Critical role, community and mythic quest have all done a good job in various ways riffing off that.

obviously it's just a trailer, so you can't really tell, but i'll be interested to see whether the D&D tie-in is really necessary. i've never played, but i would imagine stranger things has brought more awareness of it to a wider audience and maybe they're trying to capitalize on that a bit?
having an owlbear as one of the monsters is a pretty deep dive into D&D creature lore. Some of the other beasts in the trailer are straight out of the greatest book ever published, which I've held onto a copy of since the 1980s, the Monster Manual.

You can snag a copy for like $10. If you're a Stranger Things fan, it's great seeing all of the beasts in there - Mind Flayer, Demogorgon, etc.

Aside from looking at Gal Gadot, he was the only thing that movie had going for it. Charming even in a train wreck.

That actually looks pretty fun. I might have to watch it to purge any remaining memories of the 2000 D&D movie, which might be the single worst movie I've ever watched.

Thanks and gig'em

This trailer actually looks fun, as many have said.

What I can't believe is that someone is complaining about Pine when perhaps the most hateable actress working today is in the movie.

Michelle Rodriguez.

She's only played one character her entire career - the one-note, constantly angry female who's supposedly a badass - and she's not even good at it. I've wanted to punch her in literally every single movie/show I've seen her in.

Pine was good in that wine-country movie (Bottleshock?), and was surprisingly decent as a young James T. Kirk in the only one of those rebootset Start Trek movies I ever watched.

Aside from those, he's probably been in 3 or 4 other movies I've seen, and I don't remember.

I hope this does well enough to get a Forgotten Realms/Drizzt movie/series in production, but given that they already memory-holed the Community D&D episode where Chang cosplayed a Drow, that's probably a vain hope.
I mean, there are probably plenty of black actors to play a convincing Drizzt. I wonder if Salvatore would ever let it happen.
