As someone who knows absolutely nothing about D&D minus whatever references I've seen on TV from big bang theory, South Park, etc…..is this something someone like me would enjoy?

if you've got 5 minutes....this is just some of the best over the top acting you'll ever see

Video is mislabeled. I remember that movie and there were no highlights.

I'm enjoying that the title of this thread seems to be aging quite poorly.

I caught a prescreening of this movie last week.

No spoilers below.

All of the early praise and good reviews are well deserved. This is a good, fun movie. This is Lord of the Rings if early 2010s Marvel would have done it. They squeeze a lot of origin story, adventure, character development, teamwork, and action into two hours and fourteen minutes. Don't go in expecting Empire Strikes Back or LOTR: Return of the King. Its not quite that epic, but the story is good, the effects didn't feel overly CGI (which is GREAT), and Chris Pine is very good leading this team and movie. There are enough light or comedic moments to keep the tone fun, but there's plenty of magic, dungeons, and dragons.

I played a little DnD in my junior high days, and I've always thought the concept of the game was interesting. I haven't played since then, but I always pay attention when I see the "D&D" logo. If this movie didn't have the "Dungeons & Dragons" brand, I wouldn't have seen it in the theater. I would have streamed it and enjoyed it, and I would have regretted not seeing it on the big screen.

The easiest comparison is, you guessed it, Guardians of the Galaxy. This movie is easier to digest mentally, because there aren't portals, or tesseracts, or gods, or alternate timelines, or a whole series of movies with backstory that you need to know.

I wish they would make a Dungeons & Dragons movie just like this, but show a bunch of nerds sitting around a table playing the game, and cut between the imaginary action and the real life nerds rolling dice, eating cheetos, and playing the game. That would make it a true D&D game movie instead of a really fun fantasy movie with a lot of nods to the classic game.

I had this exact same thought this morning.

I honestly kind of expected the movie to end with a post credits scene of the nerds playing the actual D&D campaign.

There is one post-credit scene after the big credits (directors, stars, etc.). I didn't stay long enough to see if anything came after all of the rolling credits.

make it better by having it be big time A-list actors playing then nerds just for fun….or even the original avengers cast doing it….heads would explode

Have to toss this Brazilian car commercial in from a few years ago to crank up the hype.

They already made that movie. It's called The Gamers. They made a few of them.

One of the writer/directors of the movie, John Francis Daily - the one in the middle - played Sam on Freaks & Geeks...

He's done a few big movies recently, and I typically like all of them. He wrote Spider-Man Homecoming, for example.

He co-wrote/directed Game Night as well, which is maybe the last great comedy.

If you're going to see it, DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN to avoid the cameo spoiler!

Also IO9 has a great look at some of the weirdest things in the first Monster Manual, which I am proud to own, and from which Stranger Things brought us the Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer.

Just saw Pine promoting the movie on ET. He's as grey as Hugh Grant now. Looks close to 50. Surprised to see he's only 42.

Super fun. Guardians of Middle Earth.

I enjoyed that more than GOTG 2. (Sorry TC)

It's really fun. It's not high art or anything and the plot bounces around a bit from Maguffin to Maguffin, but that works in this very funny genre flick with lots of heart. Action sequences are good, especially the way they uniquely show magic on the screen. Cast is great, especially Pine and Grant.

The best thing about it is it's not some generic fantasy movie with D&D slapped on the cover. It feels like an adventure you'd have on Toril and specifically the Sword Coast. Lots of stuff in there for fans. BUT, neither does it spend a bunch of time drinking its own Kool-Aid. If you've never played a single session or read a single book of D&D you'll be totally fine. You may not recognize this name or that, or know what some beast that walks by in the background is called (that happens a lot), but you're not out anything for it.

Btw, for those who haven't seen it yet, they obviously use a lot of CG, but tons of practical effects as well.

Loved it and really enjoyed all the different elements from the D&D.. made me remember all the great succession I had with my friends.

Chris and Michelle are awesome and have great buddy comedy. Give it a B+ .. solid fun movie. Perfect for taking your kids. My 15 yr old loved it. If you know the Forgotten Realm, Neverwinter Nights, Balder Gate, Icewind Dale... it takes place in this world.. so lots of references. Unlike other D&D movies, it actually feels like D&D with plenty of non-human characters.

For those wondering how nerdy it is...

I've never played D&D at all, and it was a fun movie. For some reason, I kept getting Princess Bride vibes from it.

Loved it....what is crazy is the similarities between it and our current game. We are stuck in seccomber on our way to waterdeep and two of our members are in an arena as prisoners with nobles and corrupt high lords gambling on the games against monsters....
