Fun stuff! Hopefully other theaters were more filled than ours, probably 10% capacity.

Never played D&D, but really enjoyed the movie. I'm sure there were a ton of references that were fun for those that play(ed), but it didn't keep us from loving it.

Also, this thread title has not aged well

Yeah there were fewer than 10 in my theater, but I chalked that up to being on a Friday in the middle of the day. Box office seems to have done well.

Last night 9:45 showing at Flix was probably 70-80% full.

Just got back from catching it tonight. The theater was maybe 60% full? The movie itself was somewhere between ok and good. There was an eye rolling amount of Deus ex machina, and things seemed to happen more because the plot needed them to happen than for any other reason, but it did have some fun action set pieces and the villain was wicked and daunting.
Thanks and gig'em

I mean I feel like you kind of missed the point of the movie if you thought the plot felt contrived.

Had a lot of fun. It's definitely in the vein of Guardians, Ragnarok, etc, just not *quite* as funny or endearing, but still good for a number of laughs. The cast is great, the script is really well done, it never drags, and does an incredible job of setting up a number of plot points and paying them off later, in expert fashion. I may or may not have even teared up toward the end, right when a portion of the audience actually started clapping. Overall, you could tell everyone really loved it.

As for our theater, I'd say it was about 85% full (saw it in IMAX at the big AMC flagship theater in LA), but the theater overall was PACKED like I haven't seen in years. Just people everywhere, I stood in line for concessions for close to 15 minutes, and the whole place was buzzing, which was so encouraging to see. It's John Wick's second weekend, there was an early Air screening, and it's looking like this is going to hit or surpass $40M this weekend, so I'd say a sequel is all but guaranteed.

in other words it felt like a fun game of D&D

the setbacks and improvisation were so well done

You know, shout-out to Rege-Jean Page in this one. His character could have come across as boring or generic but he was making us laugh pretty consistently. I was worried he might be a one-hit wonder after his awful appearance in the awful Gray Man but he had all the charm you'd expect or hope for from his Bridgerton days.

I'll add spoiler tags, but

I thought he was great and kept hoping he'd show up in the third act. I guess the point was to show that the tag tag team could get it done, but I thought he was awesome and hope he's a bigger part of the inevitable sequel

I took my 9 yo which I was a little worried about, but it ended up being ok and he loved it. I thought it was better than I expected. It almost felt like a movie that I would have watched in the 80s that now holds some nostalgia and becomes a cult classic. Comparisons to Princess Bride are accurate but while watching, I was actually thinking about Goonies and Conan while watching it. Also, spoiler alert. No BS woke crap.

Past few movies I've seen the actors come on before and thank the audience for seeing the movie in a theater. I don't like this and felt like it takes me out of the experience and back to reality right when I'm primed for the movie to start.

Yeah, I thought it was a little weird, especially since 2 of them just sat there and never said anything. Oh well, Chris Pine told me I'm a hero, so I'll take it.

Very fun movie, glad I saw it in the theater and truly do hope there's a sequel.

I know nothing about D&D other than what I saw in the cartoon back in the 1980s, but I at least recognized that Easter egg and loved it.

I caught a prescreening of this movie last week.

No spoilers below.

All of the early praise and good reviews are well deserved. This is a good, fun movie. This is Lord of the Rings if early 2010s Marvel would have done it. They squeeze a lot of origin story, adventure, character development, teamwork, and action into two hours and fourteen minutes. Don't go in expecting Empire Strikes Back or LOTR: Return of the King. Its not quite that epic, but the story is good, the effects didn't feel overly CGI (which is GREAT), and Chris Pine is very good leading this team and movie. There are enough light or comedic moments to keep the tone fun, but there's plenty of magic, dungeons, and dragons.

I played a little DnD in my junior high days, and I've always thought the concept of the game was interesting. I haven't played since then, but I always pay attention when I see the "D&D" logo. If this movie didn't have the "Dungeons & Dragons" brand, I wouldn't have seen it in the theater. I would have streamed it and enjoyed it, and I would have regretted not seeing it on the big screen.

The easiest comparison is, you guessed it, Guardians of the Galaxy. This movie is easier to digest mentally, because there aren't portals, or tesseracts, or gods, or alternate timelines, or a whole series of movies with backstory that you need to know.

I wish they would make a Dungeons & Dragons movie just like this, but show a bunch of nerds sitting around a table playing the game, and cut between the imaginary action and the real life nerds rolling dice, eating cheetos, and playing the game. That would make it a true D&D game movie instead of a really fun fantasy movie with a lot of nods to the classic game.

Mild strong language, someone got beheaded I think in the distant frame, and some jump scares

like Temple of Doom but not as scary

I think the jump scares and just general creepiness of the red witch lady are probably the most questionable parts for kids

Wife (no D&D or nerd gaming background) and I (Neerrrrd!) thoroughly enjoyed it at the early matinee this morning. (50ish percent full?). Plenty of fan-service for those who know what a gelatinous cube is or where Baldur's Gate can be found, but none of it is important for enjoying the movie. Agreed that it's a step or two below GotG, but that's an awfully high bar to set.

We agreed that we'd see it again in the theater which is rare for either of us. I'll add it to my collection when available and I'm looking forward to another installment.

Took the kids. They liked it. I thought it was good, not great. The humor was ok. Not Ragnorak-like.

It's funny that the material component is a bit of fleece.

Or maybe I'm reading too much into it and am just a nerd.

no, you're right. it's funny.

also, there was a point in the movie where Simon was trying to cast a spell and his mouth got covered and i was nerd pleased because it interrupted his verbal component

Took my 7 year old who loved it. There's a little bit of language but on the lighter side for PG-13. One scene my son got scared in, but he just didn't watch and I told him when it was over...and he walked out wanting to call his mom and tell her how good it was.

As another poster noted, most questionable part was the Boogeyman preview. Skip if at all possible.
