Fun stuff! Hopefully other theaters were more filled than ours, probably 10% capacity.

There was an eye rolling amount of Deus ex machina, and things seemed to happen more because the plot needed them to happen than for any other reason
Yeah, I thought it was a little weird, especially since 2 of them just sat there and never said anything. Oh well, Chris Pine told me I'm a hero, so I'll take it.Quote:
Past few movies I've seen the actors come on before and thank the audience for seeing the movie in a theater. I don't like this and felt like it takes me out of the experience and back to reality right when I'm primed for the movie to start.

I caught a prescreening of this movie last week.
No spoilers below.
All of the early praise and good reviews are well deserved. This is a good, fun movie. This is Lord of the Rings if early 2010s Marvel would have done it. They squeeze a lot of origin story, adventure, character development, teamwork, and action into two hours and fourteen minutes. Don't go in expecting Empire Strikes Back or LOTR: Return of the King. Its not quite that epic, but the story is good, the effects didn't feel overly CGI (which is GREAT), and Chris Pine is very good leading this team and movie. There are enough light or comedic moments to keep the tone fun, but there's plenty of magic, dungeons, and dragons.
I played a little DnD in my junior high days, and I've always thought the concept of the game was interesting. I haven't played since then, but I always pay attention when I see the "D&D" logo. If this movie didn't have the "Dungeons & Dragons" brand, I wouldn't have seen it in the theater. I would have streamed it and enjoyed it, and I would have regretted not seeing it on the big screen.
The easiest comparison is, you guessed it, Guardians of the Galaxy. This movie is easier to digest mentally, because there aren't portals, or tesseracts, or gods, or alternate timelines, or a whole series of movies with backstory that you need to know.
I wish they would make a Dungeons & Dragons movie just like this, but show a bunch of nerds sitting around a table playing the game, and cut between the imaginary action and the real life nerds rolling dice, eating cheetos, and playing the game. That would make it a true D&D game movie instead of a really fun fantasy movie with a lot of nods to the classic game.
Yes .. it was pretty close to being a PG movie... as stated above.. it is pretty close to Princess Bride in the action w/ little gore.bangobango said:
Is it ok for an eight year old?

It's funny that the material component is a bit of fleece.
Or maybe I'm reading too much into it and am just a nerd.
Took my 7 year old who loved it. There's a little bit of language but on the lighter side for PG-13. One scene my son got scared in, but he just didn't watch and I told him when it was over...and he walked out wanting to call his mom and tell her how good it was.bangobango said:

For the “transmute rock” spell, we pumped air up through fine sand, creating a quicksand effect. For the shot, 1000+ decorative tiles were placed over the sand, so we were really glad we got it in one take. pic.twitter.com/Fzj64aXCH0
