That's just not factual. They absolutely need BOTH audiences. I agree with you 100% that their top priority is to make make money - I've been arguing that for years - but it makes ZERO sense to claim that they're money-making strategy doesn't also involve trying to make the fanbase happy. That's paranoia speaking, and such a willfully cynical read of the situation.

They don't need to pander to the hardcore audience though. It is much much smaller than the casual fan.

The Simarillion has sold ~1 million copies worldwide in the last 50 years. The Unfinished Tales even less.

11 million saw the hobbit opening weekend in North America.

You don't need the hardcore audience to make money. It is easier to shoot for the fat part of the bell curve.

I think the last trilogy of star wars movies shows that you don't have to keep the original fan base happy and you can still make billions.

Not saying this is what ROP is doing. Never read Simillarion, so I don't really know or care what is different. So far the show is a decent Amazon watch imo, but I liked shows like Reacher better. I would probably like this show a lot better if they nixed the hobbits completely and gave that screen time to the black elf storyline, as he's the best part of the show so far imo.

But when you have name brand recognition, and you have tens of millions of people worldwide constantly demanding more content from streaming services, you can be a lot less caring about how faithful it is to the source material.

I'm also thinking that Mordor ends up getting more sealed off from The rest of the continent during this time.

Geographically, the southlands should be the land southwest of Gondor - I think.

Episode 1, 36:30, they do a cinematic of the map going from Lindon to the Southlands.
Its absoloutely to the East of where Mordor is here. http://lotrproject.com/map/#zoom=4&lat=-1956.49458&lon=2039.92288&layers=BTTTTTTTT

East of the Sea of Nurnen on the map.
Whether that makes sense, who knows.

Would you guys please stop cluttering up the thread with nonsense about where the Southlands are located and let us concentrate on the pizzing contest about how much Hollywood does or doesn't hate the audience?

Please note that this is complete sarcasm and I greatly appreciate the information about the show itself. Maybe the thread can get back on track.

I am personally not getting too hung up on borders of Mordor in the 3rd age vs what we are seeing today in a prior age.

For one, when reading the books and looking at maps as well, the LOTR maps don't really have strong demarcations. The lands and nations kind of muddle next to each other.

Also, a la Russia in the 20th century, nations grow and shrink in size with time.

I was going to be a jerk and ask, what if we wanted to see things from the Silmarillion? No Beleriand! But then saw the option in the top right.

Yes please let's all make a list of who on the show we think is gay, and why black elves and black hobbits should all be sent to the Cracks of Doom.

If you really want maps look for The Atlas of Middle Earth by Karen Fonstad. She had maps and other info for all ages. It's really well done.

Every year at the King William Fair during Fiesta, there's this old couple that has this huge booth of the coolest Hawaiian shirts ever.

One of them is a map of middle earth. I want one but every year they don't have my size (2XL). That, and it's $300.

I read Stormlight on kindle. I have to go online for a good map that is easier to use. I could see myself accidentally going to a "spoiler" map like this in the past.

So I'm thinking that either Adar or Halbrand are Sauron. Gut tells me Adar but Halbrand being a good metal smith as well as his comments about darkness have me 2nd guessing.

I started watching well after the thread started so apologies if this has already been discussed.
