The little kid from 1883 was named John and so I think Spencer is a new character

This one has Jack as a son of John

WRONG EMOJI.

The little boy from 1883 was John. Spencer is the one off hunting in Africa.

In the Yellowstone flashback where James gets shot there are TWO boys. John and Spencer. Spencer is, presumably, John's little brother born after Elsa dies in the 1883

John is married in the 1st episode of 1923 and Jack is his son. NOTE: Jack is a nickname for John. The first family tree above shows Jack and John II as siblings. I believe they are the same person… and the second family tree supports that.

So are you saying that Jack was not just murdered on the mountain top?

So did we see John, the little boy from 1883, at all in this episode?

And we don't know if Jack was murdered by the sheepherders or not.

And Spencer would be - in his 40s. Does that seem right for the guy we saw in Africa?

I didn't say that. But Jack was not just murdered on a mountain top. All they showed was some guy shooting. Shooter could have missed. Jack could have been hit but not mortally wounded.

Yes - he's played by James Badge Dale (The Pacific, Iron Man 3, 13 Hours, The Departed):

I thought the guy hunting in Africa was Harrison and Helen's son?

No, that's Spencer. He was in the Yellowstone flashback with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. James gets shot but makes it home before he dies. There's a second son at that point.

Same.

I thought the show was a great first episode.

It's weird that the son was in the show but hardly acknowledged if at all. Also, anytime Harrison Ford is anything, all I see is Harrison Ford - not whoever his character is. But the show around him has made up for that so far.

So they left it a little open for Jack to be killed and a kid still be born. The short dialogue between Harrison Ford and Jack's fiancee's father kind of hinted that Jack and his fiancee might have already done the deed. So could be a son (John Dutton from Yellowstone's father) that could happen even if Jack was killed by the sheepherder.

Re: Spencer, I think he was traumatized from serving in WW1 and rather than go back to Montana to work on the ranch with his aunt and uncle, he decided to hunt for hire in Africa. Cool scenes there with the leopards. That English chick who had an eye for him didn't last long.

To me Ford is low on energy and not very convincing in this show.

I enjoyed his character in the Pacific. If you have not read Robert Leckie's book, "Helmet For My Pillow", do it. "The Pacific", is based upon it and "With the Old Breed". Darn good book.

He is 80 years old. I think he is doing a great job considering. I think a younger guy (someone in their 60's -LOL) could have been higher energy, but they casting agent went for the "name".

If he is low energy in this role, how in the world is he going to pull off Indian Jones?

How is Harrison Fords character a Dutton?
Didn't they narrate that he was Faith Hills sister?
Did he just take Tim McGraw's name to build on what little they had started?

He is the brother of James Dutton(Mcgraw). So he is a biological Dutton. Jacob(Ford) and Cara(Mirren) Dutton have no children.

It explained in the beginning of the episode that Margaret wrote to Jacob Dutton to come save the ranch after James died. He arrived a year later to find Margaret frozen to death and her two sons(John Dutton I and Spencer) clinging to life.

The family trees like the one posted above made the episode much more enjoyable and coherent for us. I started to get some Game of Thrones type thoughts going on. Aka- who the heck is related to who and in what way.

I think both of the family trees above are wrong. I think it's something like this, but dates don't really work for me.

James Dutton (Tim McGraw)
B. 1835-40 d. circa 1890

John Dutton I (Kid from 1899/older cowboy we haven't really seen much of yet in 1923/James Badge Dale)
B. Circa 1876 d. Sometime after 1923, mid 1940s-50s if due to to old age)

John "Jack" Dutton II (kid getting married in 1923, Dabney Coleman in Yellowstone)
B. circa 1900 d. 1980s?

John III (Kevin Costner)
B. Early 50s?(Costner was born in 55)

I use my own family tree to help.

I'm about Kayce's age (80s baby)
My dad is about Costner's age (50s baby)
His parents were born 20s/30s (in line with the presumed pregnancy mentioned in ep. 1)
My great grandma was born early 1900s, so about the same time as the couple who were about to get married.
My great great grand parents were born (I think) 1870s/1880s, so lines up perfectly with the kids from 1883

You can't bring logic to the Yellowstone timeline. Don't forget, they don't have a winter there so all of their years are shorter.
