What a spectacular episode.

For the record, Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, who cowrote the game story, cowrote this episode with Craig Mazin.

A lot of the scenes were a beat for beat match of the game, but how it was told was adapted in a way that made sense to how they are currently presenting the season. Brilliantly done overall.

Absolutely loved this episode. Flashbacks were great, scenes with Joel's dad + the watch, the porch scene, the cakes, guitar.

The contents of this episode is a major reason why us gamers have said the game has some of the most masterful storytelling of all time.

Love how they structured this episode with back to back birthday sequences. It is interesting that in the episode they had Joel say he loved Ellie. That was always inferred in the game but never said.

Agree on Lalo Salamanca playing Joel's dad. That dude is a hell of an actor.

Set design is just insane. I was in awe when they showed the actual planet exhibit. There's no way that was easy to make lol

Okay. That was a good ass episode.

Just need to say though that it cannot be overstated how good Pedro Pascal is. Everyone did well here, on and off screen, but Pedro showed why he's S-tier on this show.

One last thought. For all of the faults or whatever that we've discussed around this adaptation, I'm struggling to think of a better television show that nails cold opens better than TLOU.

That is one thing this show doesn't mess up, regardless of if you've played the game or not. The hit rate is super high on how they set up episodes.

I missed what cause Ellie to stop as they were leaving the museum. I know it panned to something in the trees, but I didn't notice anything specific.

They were actual fireflies flying around the vegetation which then reminded her of the Fireflies group which then reminded her of her internal conflict about what Joel may have done at the end of S1.

Me either. I just thought it was a scenic spot with lightning bugs flying around.

Literally as I typed that maybe it was fireflys and a seed of doubt entered her head at seeing them.

went over my head too but they showed it again during the "after the episode" and it made more sense. I lose track of all the names these different groups have.

what a great episode. Fitting farewell for Joel.

Great episode!

Pascal has helped create an all-time memorable TV character.

Unfortunately, this episode also highlights and thus reminds us even more of what the show is now missing.

Posting here as a bookmark for when I catch up. Late to the party but started binging last night. Got through the first three episodes of season 1 and I am hooked. Nick Offerman's character was great. He is funny even when he isn't trying to be.

That was exactly my thought. It highlighted why there has been a decrease in quality (not major, but noticeable) since Joel was killed off.

That same sentiment has been spoken about the 2nd game versus the first. What made the first game so incredible was not just the relationship, but the dynamic, between this older man and this young teenage girl who he came to view as a substitute for his daughter. The gravitas, the weight, that a male that age with his life experiences (much less a life in an apocalyptic world) is crucial to making Game 1/Season 1 so good.

That can't be replaced by the relationship of two teenage girls who are essentially the same character.

Last night's episode just made me even angrier about Ellie and the way she treated Joel. He TRIED so effing hard for her, and she just threw it all away.

And how did he know for sure that the doctor 100% would have found a cure if he'd let him have Ellie? It was all speculation! So not sure why he answered her question so absolutely when she asked if they would've made a cure. HE DIDN'T KNOW.

Everything about Ellie just infuriates me that much more after last night's episode. I'm fine if she gets taken out and Dina replaces her as the showrunner.

This was a question I had as soon as Joel answered her.

What I think is that he feels so very guilty for what he had to do to save Ellie that he rejects anything that might in any way justify his decision or make it less terrible. His guilt makes him embrace the starkest possible interpretation of his actions. He has done something completely evil, he knows it, he admits it, and he would do it again to save her.

But yeah, incredible episode overall.

Fungal infections are treated regularly with fungicidial meds. Not sure what that guy is ranting about.

Now they are basic pharma meds, not derived from killing a child that is immune.

What are you, some kind of doctor?

Seriously, though, is what you're talking about a treatment or a cure? Or does ultimately not matter?

(I have no dog in this hunt, I mainly just found some of the responses interesting.)

People get fungal skin infections all the time (ring worm) as well as fungal nail infections and they are easily treatable. Immunosuppressed people get weird fungal stuff in their lungs usually and that is treatable, but the meds are fairly potent and IV (amphotericin B).

ETA: Heck I had fungal junk in my frontal sinuses that the ENT sucked out it in the OR. They just aren't as aggressive as this fictionalized version.

Thankfully no, just calcified goo in my sinuses and was causing polyps obstructing nasal flow. Likely was there for years.

I felt the same way as you. It's also completely believable. Teenage girl, hormones, no father. I stop and think to myself, yes, she could in fact be this irrational.

Not sure what the point was of Ellie washing up ashore and getting hanged up only to get saved by the bell. Unnecessary five minutes and just furthers the main issue of the season. (Plot armor)

Was Ellie really dumb enough to try to kill two guys in the dark and rain at that distance with a handgun?

Scar around Abby neck that looked like a rope burn

A stadium is a pretty good place to build your WLF fortress

Pretty good examination and background of Jesse before his end.

Feels like they cut out a lot of Ellie going to the Scar's Island when they probably should have cut the whole thing. But it was a nice mirror of the Scar boy she wanted to save but Jesse didn't let her.

Hell of a cliffhanger. Hopefully it won't be another two years like it was between season one and season two.

So that was the last episode of Season 2?

So Season 3 will go back through the same stuff, but from the POV of Abby and the Wolves?

One thing that occurs to me, that leads me to a prediction. Of course I have no idea if the game ends on a positive note or on a negative note.

This episode is very dark. People keep saying that they HAVE to live (in order to save some small community that they belong to), and then of course get killed.

The episode deals with the Biblical question of "Who is my neighbor?" Characters are willing to sacrifice themselves, but only for a narrowly-defined community of "neighbors."

The dying pregnant woman whom Ellie shoots wants Ellie to save her baby, but Ellie doesn't know how.

But Ellie DOES know how to save the world: through an act of self-sacrifice.

It is possible that the show ends positively with Ellie somehow managing to get to a facility/doctor that can attempt the same procedure that Abby's father was going to perform, and agreeing to do that operation as a way to atone for Joel's killings to save her and for her own killings to avenge Joel.

In that way someone finally breaks the cycle of "selfish" killing (Ellie called Joel "selfish") and dies willingly to save everyone.

Waiting two years to presumably tread the same three days, just from a different perspective, is such a bad decision.

I'm inclined to just read a summary of the rest of the game at this point. I really liked parts of this seasons, at times more than most, but as of now I have little desire to keep watching. The bleakest, most depressing **** + utterly baffling storytelling choices = me looking for any excuse to bail.
