Agreed on that point. But the Critical Drinker actually has a lot more valid issues with this show that I completely agree with and have discussed in previous posts. The above post does him a little bit of disservice by narrowing down his conplaints to just that one point.

I'll take a look. I do agree that there are so many issues with this show (and I enjoyed the first season) that I'm sure there is a ton of great discussion about them.

IMO, women leading a combat force is not one of those issues. This show has veered into late-stage walking dead character decision making halfway through season 2. I'm not sure I've hated a main character so much since Janice Soprano.

LOL

My last hated character was Geoffrey on GOT. But it was for good reasons. You are supposed to hate him.

I think Janice was the same. She played her part right and it just so happened it made you not like her. Kind of funny she did you know what to the same guy Joel just capped in this show.

This shows hated character is for bad reasons and I'm pretty sure not the intended reaction.

Critical Drinker has a good youtube channel where he rips this ridiculous show apart. We watched it to its end only because we had already invested the time in previous episodes. The show is ridiculous, and the messaging is over the top "girl power" nonsense. Every military leader in this show is a woman. Small, feeble women are overpowering their male counterparts. It's really ridiculous and asks of the viewer too much.
Very funny with all of the real problems with the show (like nonsensical decision-making and a structure that has destroyed the character relationships we care about) to decide that, no, what really matters is "ewww girls!"

I completely forgot about Geoffrey. I think My trauma response blocked that memory.

You bring up a great point about these characters, how they were written, and how the actors portrayed them. They were supposed to evoke these reactions and we are absolutely not supposed to hate Ellie.

I can accept plot armor, since the show is based on a video game, but my god, the bi-polar decision making and total lack of awareness just destroys any empathy I have towards her and just about everybody else in this show. In one scene you are overly concerned about your baby momma, and the next scene you are fighting over saving some rando caught in a war you aren't involved in.

I don't think its HOTD season 2 bad, but, IMO, it's really close.

You're a simple fellow, aren't you? "Eww girls", is that what you boiled my argument down to? Perhaps some of us would like some semblance of common sense and believability in show where we're already asked to believe the extraordinary.

That's exactly what your argument is. You do realize that in this world, wars have been fought non-stop for decades. Based on the vast history of men leading wars, most of the male leaders likely got themselves killed in the early days of everything that was happening.

That leaves a lot of men you are probably familiar with left, and a bunch more women. So the fact that we see a bunch of women military leaders actually makes sense, when you look at the show through a non-emotional/triggered point of view.

Also, are you going to answer my question about your military service?

Yes, you're right, nevermind. Women occupying positions of power is the believability problem in a show about zombies. What was I thinking.

To start with the show is based on the game so your issues would stem from that.

That said, there's one younger female character who may be the next leader of the WLF, a secondary WLF female leader, and our main character who's obviously female, and every other military leader we've seen (WLF, Scars, Jackson) is male. So common sense would actually be realizing that your feelings are not what's actually happening on the show.

Melanie Lynsky's character in season 1 was another female leader.

(Not that I'm agreeing or disagreeing. Just adding to the list.)

Funny enough there's a new sale on PS that started today.

Part 1 is almost 60% off. 1-2 both for $70.

Just bought them.

The entire boat wreck and island with the Scars could have been clipped out and it would not have made any difference to the story. Just makes no sense. And then they decide to leave her there when they could have gutted her just as quickly. I'm guessing there was more to it but maybe they just edited all out?

I had the exact same thought about the Seraphite scene. Completely unnecessary. The explosion they showed would have been enough.

And the wave took her and the boat out, but somehow the boat was perfectly beached and ready for her to continue her journey. Nice and convenient.

Kaitlyn Dever was nails in her minimal screen time, though. I am excited to see more of her in the third season.

I hate that I'm *****ing so much about the season, but I had extremely high expectations going in and feel like it was a letdown in almost every aspect.

Also, not going to post any links for those that don't want to be spoiled, but there are amazing no commentary walkthroughs of the game on YouTube. It's also divided up very similarly, character-wise, so you could pause midway through and not be spoiled for season 3. It's very easy to tell when to stop watching.

Enjoy. Part 2 is so much better than Season 2.

Bright spot of the finale for me was Kaitlin Dever's portrayal of Abby in Lumen Field. I think Season 3 will be great with her.

Anyone else catch the skyscraper girders in the scene backdrop as Ellie and Jesse began heading to the bookstore?

Minor annoyances:
- she said they could have half the deer but gave them all of it.

What'd you want her to do? Field dress the deer holding them at gunpoint knowing that these are the guys that tried to kill Joel?
Um, no. She probably doesn't know how to do that anyway.

Make him field dress the deer instead listening to him monologue about how he's a savior and can save her too. What did she get out of listening to him beat his chest about how awesome him and his starving community are.

The other dude had to hike 4 miles roundtrip. That's plenty of time to hold David at gunpoint and say, "here's a knife, get busy."

Instead of leaving with drugs and half the meat (after previously showing her and Joel had little-to-no food left) she departed with no food.

And, as a hunter, generally you want to field dress an animal as soon as you can to avoid risk of the meat spoiling. I get that they're in the cold and clearly not picky about what they eat...but it makes no sense to sit around talking while rigor mortis sets in.
What makes you think she has any experience in any of this?

She's a scared kid who isn't thinking straight.

She had the gun but was scared ****less and he still had control of the whole situation.

And he didn't even field dress the deer.

But does it matter in sub freezing temps?

Just caught up with season 2 and for some reason I'm rereading this whole thread trying to find wheee I left off last year…holy cow

I can't believe no one made a joke here. OF COURSE SHE ISN'T THINKING STRAIGHT, EVERYONE IN THIS SHOW IS GAY!

I will admit the "I'm going to be a dad" line was annoying

Yeah, it is definitely at risk of going "Westworld", especially with years between seasons. I still enjoyed it, and the production quality is amazing, but the story is definitely at risk.

I was out of the country and caught up this week. Anyone still want to discuss the show or nah?

Listening to the pod, the showrunners seem to think they landed this season, in no small part because they know what is coming up. For those of us that don't (edit…I mean, you can easily figure it out with the ending), asking us to wait ~2 years for Abby's story, a character we really don't like at all, is a lot.

Those were my issues. I never wrote that it was his issues but he does make mention of the absurd agenda of the show.

As far as reevaluating my life, some of you on here are unbelievable. I now need to reevaluate my life because I find in an apocalyptic scenario it's not reasonable to assume that women take charge over men?? And have I served in the military?? Good grief. Some of you, are you writers on the show to where every critique is taken personally??

No, I never served in the military. I guess that makes my opinion in every regard irrelevant because you experienced something that I didn't?? Is that how this works? Your opinion is the only valid one because of your military service? Gotcha.

Enjoy the show.

I thought they did a great job with Episode 6, as well as the episode with Day 1 in Seattle.

Other than that, it was an underwhelming season for me.
Part 2 (the game) is so much better than Season 2 in every regard.

I'm still trying to figure out how "every military leader in the show is a woman" when there's like 2 or maybe 3, but to each their own.

And again, your issue would likely be more with the game that the show follows than the show.

You could watch ep 6 as pretty much a standalone and it's very, very good. Ep 2 was also really good IMO and pretty key to the whole story (and sounds like you're familiar with the events).
