Saw a trailer today at Mickey 17. Looks awesome but the trailer I saw had Queen's We Will Rock You and that was cheesy as hell. Did not fit well at all. Last time I heard that song in a trailer was for Nacho Libre.

You are, indeed, correct about them using an F2 car (though it's slightly more complicated than that), which they cover in some detail in one of the questions above. Good eye. It sounds like it has more to do with the camera mounts than anything? I can't quite tell.
I think what they're saying is they're using F2 cars in place of glorified go karts dressed to look like F1 cars . . . not that they chose F2 cars over F1 cars.

Using real F1 cars was probably never on the table. Too expensive, even using decommissioned cars. F2, much cheaper and easier to get/operate. Not to mention way easier for actors to drive. So Toto's suggestion was to use F2 so they could film with cars that are somewhat near F1 in performance.

In that last trailer at 2:04 that's the Omnia in Vegas so I assume they'll be including the LV Grand Prix in part of the movie.

60 year old race car driver looking to mentor in a sport where 30 is considered old. What's next? Jamie Foxx reprises Willie Beaman the 58 year old QB in Any Given Sunday 2?

Just joking, the movie will probably be badass because Brad Pitt doesnt make bad movies.

As reported by CinemaBlend, Kosinski talked at length about Pitt's driving during a virtual conference when presenting the recent trailer for the film. The director offered a few details about the movie, but also made it clear that months of intense training were necessary in order to get the actors inside the fast cars. The driving had to look real, and this couldn't only be accomplished with VFX. They had to drive real cars

"We actually bought six F2 cars, real F2 race cars, and worked with Mercedes AMG, the Formula One team, and their engineers to build real race cars that could carry our camera equipment, recorders, and transmitters for making this film. So every time you see Brad or Damson driving in this movie, they're driving on their own in one of these real race cars on a real F1 track. So that's kind of how we approached the making of this film."

In F2, all the cars are the same, from the chassis (built by Italian race car manufacturer Dallara) to the gearbox (built by English manufacturer Hewland). This is to showcase the drivers' true skill sets behind the wheel rather than the abilities of the racing teams to build superior cars.

Weight
F1 cars weigh about 798 kg (1,759 lbs) with the driver.
F2 cars weigh about 755 kg (1,664 lbs) with the driver, meaning they are slightly lighter.

Engines & Speed
The engines in F1 cars are much more powerful than the ones in F2 cars. F1 engines have about 1000 horsepower, while F2 cars max out at around 620 hp. This allows F1 cars to go faster than their second-tier counterparts, about 10-15 mph faster on average. The top race speed for a F1 car is over 230 mph, while the top speed for a F2 car is less than 200 mph.

Just FYI, Warner Bros was able to secure a two-week IMAX run for F1, which incudes the July 4th holiday weekend, squeezing out even Jurassic World Rebirth (which opens the next weekend) from IMAX screens.

That's a massive deal.

So F1 will run for two weeks in IMAX, from the evening of June 26 to July 10, at which Warner Bros' next summer blockbuster, Superman, will take over IMAX screens, running from the evening of July 10 to July 24, when The Fantastic Four: First Steps will take over IMAX screens from there.

In other words, Warner Bros will have an exclusive hold on IMAX screens, for an entire month, during the busiest stretch of the summer blockbuster season. Pretty crazy.

Also, the entirety of F1 was shot/will be shown in the 1.90:1 IMAX ratio, which is pretty cool as well.

Can't wait.

Movies "filmed for IMAX" receive priority and are guaranteed a two week run in situations like this. Jurassic didn't go with that approach so they get bumped. You're going to want to see this in IMAX.

There was no CGI in this movie!*

*Until January when Oscar nominations come out and we see the behind the scenes VFX video showing all the CGI

(For the record I love Kosinski, think he makes awesome movies, and can't wait for this, but he's got a history of downplaying his use of CGI.)
