Can we just all agree that the US would be proper ****ed if an EMP hit and call it a day on this thread?
Agreed the US would be proper f'd if an EMP hit, but I'd say this thread is not about the ignorant masses but rather about the smaller portion that is aware of it's surroundings and wants to discuss/plan for an unlikely scenario.

Call it the end of US 1.0 with the ignorant masses and the beginning of US 0.1 with whomever is left .

so if I am going to build out a basement bunker on Hilton Head island- do I have to create a company of soldiers to defend Peak Creek as the only fresh water source on the island?

EMP attacks do have a geograpically limited effects.

Hurricanes and tornados take out electricity in areas, too. But relief can still come in from other areas not affected.
not if it's 3 nukes exploding in the atmoshpere simultaneously over the west coast, chicago and new york

Was that show any good?

Jericho season 1 was outstanding

season 2 started to unravel as it seemed that the enemy was not the North koreans or Iranians but... the CIA.

still it was worth it for Alicia Coppolla

been reading my new "One Second After" delivered a few days ago-

nearly 3/4 way through it!

it's pretty hokey dialogue and does not ring true as the way people actually speak

but the underlying story is pretty awesome and engrossing

who else has read this

I just reread the 3 novels and finished the 4th novel yesterday.

I just read Patriots, first time I had ever heard the term 'Quisling', so had to look it up. The next day, someone is using it on the forum. Go figure. The author used 'Schumer' as a replacement for a specific cuss word, as in "we were in the Schumer" or "the Schumer hit the fan".

If 3 nukes explode over those cities, the emp issue is one of the least ****ed things going on at the time.

An EMP is a problem when nukes are exploded high in the atmosphere, far too high to cause damage on the ground.

I get that.

I'm saying that we've got other really messed up issues that are more pressing. The emp is the side effect of a much worse disease.

I don't see a reasonable scenario where nukes are exploded only for their emp capabilities.

That essentially the plot of the novels. A Rouge nation/actor manages to get only 2. High altitude burst results in catastrophic damage as the citizens destroy society and the death toll is 80%. Plus no real nuclear damage. Much more effective than popping one off at ground level and wrecking a city when you can destroy entire nations.

If you don't want to radiate the land you are conquering, and you don't want to use many warheads to hit the entire country, the use of three in a high atmosphere, can totally destroy the land and it's people from within. Wait a few months then March your military forces in through Canada and Mexicoif you have to.

EMP - hasn't happened because only a few actors could pull that off, we'd almost certainly know who did it and they would be turned to glass in short order.

A debilitating grid cyber attack could cause similar effects and could be pulled off by a wide variety of state actors, terrorist groups, or individual hackers and it would be difficult to definitively place blame. Given all that, it is harder to figure out why that kind of attack hasn't happened yet.

As mentioned before, the other reason to harden the grid is for a Carrington Event. Which has happened.

I think we are coming up on a solar maximum in a couple of years. The 1859 Carrington event happened one year prior to a solar maximum.

Quisling was a Norwegian Nazi stooge who was in power until the end of the war- thus the term became synonymous with "traitor"

like the Norway version of "Benedict Arnold"
