He doesn't need to know Engish. He can take his eyes off the road and take a picture of highway sign and then look at his phone for 30-45 seconds to get the proper translation as he shoots down the highway like a missle.

Perhaps the federal government Emmett should require English proficiency for any commercial (or otherwise to my concern) driver who uses a federal roadway. I mean we have had English as our official language since March now!

If a state wants to issue a CDL (or other license) to a driver who isn't proficient in English, that state should put a restriction for no federal roadways on the license AND be at risk of liability should that driver damage or injure others on a federal roadway.

While we are at it, no federal election voting either!

FWIW, back in the summer of '95 I worked on the freight dock in Ft. Worth unloading freight for 6 hours then drove to Dallas to train for my CDL 5 days a week for 6 solid weeks.

The truck I drove in training had no power steering and no A/C and not an automatic or automated transmission.

These are the standards and conditions I wish all applicants faced.

A manual transmission requirement (up to 18 speed) for CDL testing would eliminate 60 plus percent of our problems.
