I have 30 years in the trucking industry and well over 2 million incident free miles driven. This upcoming spring, I'm letting the CDL endorsement drop. As someone with a bit of a health issue and restricted to a 1 year medical card, the amount of medical hoops I have to go through to stay compliant just aren't worth it for me anymore.

All that being said, the fact that these non-domiciled CDLs are being issued like candy to non-English speaking foreigners here on visas or here illegally makes my blood boil.

Try to do the right thing and it's an uphill battle.
Circumvent the legal channels as an outsider and it's easy as pie to get behind the wheel.

It's open season on America's highways.

It is downright scary driving on the highways in Arizona, most of which are curvy and mountainous , when driving up to the north or over to the eastern side of the state. Have seen so many wrecks involving semis or monster RV busses and a couple of times happened right in front of me...Was nearly involved in one myself pulling a heavy trailer with my 2500 truck doing 65 mph, and a semi pulled off the shoulder of the road on a blind curve right in front of me, I could barely get stopped in time not to plow into the back of the Semi, and people behind me had to swerve off into shoulder and passing lane to avoid hitting me. That was the scariest day of my driving life, he pulled out in front of me so fast and my only option was plow into the semi or slide/swerve/ jacknife off the road onto shoulder with a 100 plus foot dropoff right at the edge of the shoulder..

Non-domiciled CDL holders need only go to Facebook to get hired and/or buy MC (Motor Carrier) numbers...

I think Biden importing 20,000,000+ illegal alien criminals is where we lost control. Maybe we can improve by continuing to elect sane leadership.

African and middle Eastern truckers were prominent well before Biden's term. I deal with them regularly.

I met a guy in Rockport this summer who is a truck driver. He told me that the reason companies had to bring in so many foreign truck drivers is because so few American truckers could pass drug tests. Is that something you've heard before?

I hope they investigate and hammer California and any other state giving out CDL's to foreigners that have no business on the road.

Seems to me that they could easily find most illegal drivers using DOT E-log system.

Good in theory. In reality they just create a new company and go through the paperwork again. Or get a family member to do it. A lot of the companies already play that game anyways. Start company, get fake positive reviews, then get real negative reviews, then close company and restart.

New Substack from my friend Gord Magill:

Quote:

"...it has only become worse, especially downstream of the the Biden Administration hiring McKinsey Consulting to come up with their '2021 Trucking Action Plan', which saw the number of CDLs issued in America doubled in one year, and that doubling taking place almost exclusively via handing CDLs out like candy to people who came here downstream of Biden's open borders policies. Imagine insourcing labor from countries with little to nothing in the way of their own highway enforcement, little to no safety informed and co-operative driving culture, and every incentive in the world to extract as much value from the new host country and send it all home".

Quote:

While I welcome Secretary Rubio's closing of the tap where it regards companies in the United States and their misuse of work visas to undercut local American truckers, of whom there are plenty, this closing of the tap does nothing for the flooded basement which is the American trucking industry. More action must be taken to remove those actors who have entered the business for the purpose, again, of not following the 'American Dream', but of explicitly removing value from the country by making their drivers into virtual slaves and working them to the bone, while they also actively discriminate against existing drivers who are indigenous to the United States.

This issue is just going to accelerate self-driving trucks which are already operating in Texas. Granted, there is apparently a state law in process that will require human operators now.

We, the undersigned, urge Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Board of Executive Clemency to re-examine and reduce the sentence for a 28-year-old truck driver involved in a fatal U-turn crash on Florida's Turnpike in South Florida. This was a tragic accident not a deliberate act. While accountability matters, the severity of the charges against him does not align with the circumstances of the incident.

Reduce what "sentence"? Perhaps these legal geniuses meant to reduce the severity of the "charges"? Doesn't really matter to me as I hope there is eventually a sentence and if they can pump up the severity of the charges & make it stick then make it so.

This is a bit mind-blowing to me, if true:

From the Times of India,
Quote:

Sikh advocacy groups estimate there are approximately 150,000 to 200,000 Sikhs working in the trucking industry, with around 90% (135,000 to 180,000) being drivers. They constitute about 18% of the total truck drivers in the US and up to 40% are based in California.

This fact was buried in the 6th paragraph of a story about that Indian-national truck driver (Harjinder Singh, billed out of Stockton, CA) accused of causing three fatalities in a minivan with his truck on the Florida Turnpike earlier this month.

I will say, though, that Sikhs in general strike me as good people (not defending this guy at all). They've had to put up with/fight a lot of muslims over time.

Still, maybe this is in fact a bigger issue than recognized/thought…

I agree. In general they are good people. There was a Sikh Harris County sheriff deputy killed in the line of duty a couple years ago.

However, that does not give them (or anyone else) on whole a free pass. They, like everyone else, have to be here legally, and meet standard minimum qualifications to obtain employment and required licensure.

If they are in this country and have the skills and ability to follow the rules of the road, why would it be an issue if they are driving trucks? The ones that have an issue are the ones that can't meet those basic criteria.

Legal or illegal? Can they read and write ENGLISH? Lets start with those two

The issue isn't their religion or ethnic background, etc, but that such a large group/portion of our truck drivers are (a) non-native English speakers, (b) licensed (disproportionately) through the utterly corrupt California CDL program is problematic for a couple of reasons.

First, it makes me believe that the claims that the truck companies really are taking advantage of a cheap labor pool of often illiterate illegal aliens because it save them a few bucks. Second, because it gives me cause to believe this was not an exception, but more of a rule, including other stuff I've seen video of, and the above poster whose son did an internship in a logistics outfit.

Part of it could be excused in my mind as I think Sikhs have a low propensity of substance abuse, but 150-180K truck drivers in the US of that background makes me wonder if this is…again, not really a good thing, but a portent of more/extended dangers.

I am curious what Mike Collins has to say about this stuff, haven't seen anything online. He is a US Rep, Republican, and a truck company owner I've heard comments from over the years about his industry/beliefs about regulation. Of course he's biased, but I don't think he's a typical "DC liar."
