I'm not skiing anything in the negatives. That's just not a fun time. I'll ski the rain or cold days for the PNW (teens), but negatives - that's ultra-negative when you're moving through the air at 30mph. Bleh. Stay by the fire.

I'm headed up Thursday afternoon to Loveland. Plan on skiing Sat, Sun, and Mon. On The Snow is showing highs of -14 and -13 on Sunday and Monday. It'll be interesting to say the least

That's stupid cold. Don't play around with that. Facemask/balaclava, mittens (my warmest setup is some thinsulate ragg wool gloves with cordura/leather/goretex mitten shells), puffy/shell, fleece pants under your shells. And get inside before you start feeling really cold. If there's any wind forget about 2, stick to the ocho and maybe 4, sunburst can be awesome

I just finished another round of research on gear mods and maintenance and realized I have been an idiot for skiing on factory footbeds last year. I ordered some trim to fit ones that should fit my medium arch foot shape, I have zero knowledge about them but I took at shot and ordered some brand called Sidas because they looked well built and could arrive in time for me to trim and fit and test them out before we leave on the 24tb.

I'm hoping they give me better contact with the boot bottom over the bottom of my foot. I never realized the factory ones are basically throw aways.

For anyone still looking for this season, Winter Park has a killer deal right now until tomorrow. I just booked a 4 night spring break trip (lodging and 3 days of lift tickets for two adults and two kids for ~$2600. Figured I may as well book as it is free cancelation up to 22 days prior to trip if I find a better option.

My daughter is doing ski school Saturday and Sunday and that'll be the adult's time to play. I'm taking some friends that have never been to Loveland before, so I was planning on taking them up 9 to the ridge. I need to make sure to do that Saturday when it's a steamy 7 degrees at the summit if at all. That ride in at -14 with 20MPH winds would be miserable and likely won't be fun even on Saturday.

Ski school will certainly spend enough time inside to keep the kids happy and this is only my daughter's 2nd time, so she'll never be far from the lodge. Monday I'm spending skiing with her, so I'll have to be at the valley. Probably do a run or two with her, send her inside while I do something bigger, and repeat.

I have boarded in -20 no wind. Have to suck it up on the open lifts then get right after it on runs that make you work hard. Can't be standing around talking about it keep after it. Then just skip lunch on the hill because if you go inside you probably won't be able to go out again.

Best thing about ultra cold days like that is the mountain is usually empty. Short lift lines and let a rip.

Nothing worse than waiting around in temps like those.

Rode the panoramic up to parsenns a few years ago in -30 windchill. That was cold.

They're also days where you're done around 1pm after you skied nonstop for 4 hours. Skip lunch and just finish with a hot bowl of chili when you're done.

where did you end up getting lodging? and what week? we're going up the week of the 16th and couldn't find anything that great on the lodging front.

Instead we booked a townhouse and bought lift tickets early (I got 4 days for $525 which is a steal).

Yeah, those inserts are branded cardboard.

Sidas are what you'll get "custom" from most bootfitters. But after a few days skiing, you'll bed them in just the same.

If these are newer boots, I'd also have some heel wedges / spoiler (if they came with) to play with shin contact. Swap to a booster strap ASAP you can.

Got it

That one is always priced the best/ most value. Let me know how tired the property is. Uncovered parking and have to ride the cabriolet down to the village for eating/drinking.

It's been there a while and I don't think has received any upgrades

I wonder when those brand new slopeside ones will come online.

Good to know. I've never been to winter park. In fact just getting back into skiing now that my kids are old enough. Just took them on their first ski trip to granby a couple of weeks ago. It was the perfect spot for them to learn!

I'll be sure to post a review when we get back.

Oh cool.

My family has been skiing there since the 80s and is the spot for our annual trip (or bi-annual).

I just can't stomach the prices of other hills for a weeklong trip with the entire family. We've skied Canada, Europe and most large hills in the US (Steamboat, all of the I-70s minus Aspen, Crested Butte, Wolf Creek, Tahoe, etc.), but always come back to Winter Park.

It's become more and more expensive with its IKON ownership but I feel like it's one of the last "small ski towns" that still has some modern amenities at affordable pricing. I've actually never stayed at the base. In fact, there were no lodging amenities at the base 20 years ago (math could be off).

Their shuttle/bus system is the best I've used at any resort, mostly because all of the resort's lodging is "in town" which is just a quick 5 minute shuttle ride down the hill.

Book reservations at the Idlewild distillery in town. One of the better restaurants and a cool setting. If you have a car or kitchenette, do a grocery pickup at the Safeway in Fraser. That place is a zoo and grocery pickup is a breeze.

Tubing hill in Fraser is awesome and a blast. Snowmobiling up to the continental divide is also fun.

Viscous Cycle brewing in Fraser is a good, locals spot. The two breweries in town are pretty good but can get super crowded.

Are you renting a car?

I'm using the Sidas high arch winter cut to fit in my zipfit liners and never once even thought about my feet on two trips last year and in the 4 days I just skied last week. I didn't try skiing the factory footbeds but I did do a lot of walking around with them when I got the new boots / liners and was breaking them in. When I put in the Sidas footbeds I could instantly tell that they were a huge improvement just by walking around, flexing, jumping, etc. in the boots.

Nice. I've drank quite a few beers there. Like all mountain towns, they struggle to find help. Sometimes I've been there with 1 waiter for 15+ tables. Finding a seat at the bar is really hard!

I'm guessing you're saying the lodging options are more affordable than other resorts? Because Winter Park lift tickets are among the most expensive in the country.

They are less than any Vail resort (that I've seen, especially when buying in advance). Less than Steamboat.

My 4day pass at Winter Park for Spring Break was $525. That's likely $1k at any Vail resort on I70. Or more.

Just looked. Breck is $1,068 for the same dates. Telluride $980. Park City $1,132.

I'm not going to JustPanda this but I do pretty damn extensive research every year in the fall to start looking at places. And just about every time, it swings back to WP. We did Whistler one year with the CAD being very advantageous... lift tickets were about $80/day and I had Starwood points to stay at the Westin.

Now, if you want to compare to Loveland, ABasin, Wolf Creek, Purg, WhiteFish yeah. WP is more. But of the "bigger hills" (3k acres plus) it's definitely the most affordable (outside of some of the Canadian ones but we drive, so those don't get considered, typically).

Rick will chime in and say Mt. Bachelor too but it's a hike getting there and not a ton of family friendly terrain from my understanding.

Yeah $525 is a good price. Definitely wouldn't be that at this point in the season.

$853 right now. So 20%+ less than some of those other ones.

I will say though... if you're on the east coast and don't mind a little more "planning".... European skiing is CHEAP compared to Big mountain Rockies.

We skied Zermatt (Matterhorn) about 4 years ago and the lift tickets were $95/day. Lodging and food are a little more, took time to get where we were going but man what an experience skiing in 2 different countries in the same day.

We also did the Munich to Garmisch train+ski pass. 50 euro for a lift ticket and round trip train ticket down to Garmisch and back.

Ze germans don't like to groom their runs. The Italians are all about it.

If you look at an Epic or Ikon pass you can likely get a better price than that. I bought an Epic 4 day pass last year for $376 and used all 4 days at Telluride which is a partner resort. This year I got a 7 day for like $650 that I'm using for Park City and Telluride. Now lodging may be an entirely different matter but I just paid $1,650 for 5 nights in Park City and am getting 6 nights in Telluride for $4,200 for a place that will accommodate 6-8 next month.

Yeah I looked at those at the time and pricing was a little more for the Ikon pass. I didn't buy them until November. If you jump on it in August/September, then it can be had for cheap. Didn't look at Epic as lodging is insane on the I70 big boys.

Lessons are such a racket these days... $240/day for group lessons for the kiddo. At least they included the lift ticket.

That's a good price in Park City.

Unfortunately, for lodging, I have to find "luxury" on a budget. House/townhouse is a requirement with stand-alone hot tub. Washer/dryer and 2 King Beds + spots for kiddos. And the pets have to come (tell me about it). Garaged parking and minimal steps.

When one person isn't skiing, the accommodations need to be nicer than I care for but hey, it's also free daycare for the infant.

Trust me - it takes some searching

MLK weekend last year, I skied in -20s. There was almost no one out so no lift lines, clear visibility, a small amount of fresh. I could make maybe 2 runs before I had to go sit inside and warm up.
