Do your best to make it 3 days a week. When I pushing harder for a tournament, I do 4 days but the risk of dings and injuries goes up (maybe because I'm 53). You're going to be sore for a little while. Just remember to slow down and breathe.

Out of curiosity, what point do you decide to go back to rolling after a back injury? I've have moderate protrusions in all three lower lumbar joints and the neuropathy comes and goes.

We just enrolled my 5 year old at a Carlson Gracie gym in DFW and I'm toying around with going myself. I haven't practiced BJJ in 15 years.

As mentioned earlier, I'm in boxing currently and plan to join bjj later this year, seriously can't wait. What is yall's training frequency?

Starting to do some early planning, I target boxing 3 to 4 times a week, I also love it. I know to ramp up and learn in bjj I'll need to go more than once a week meaning I'll likely reduce my boxing training. Busy job and 2 kiddos at home is making do this early planning lol.

I'm 45 and started at 42, three days a week, with a minimum of one day rest in between, is the sweet spot for me. I figured out pretty early that my body doesn't hold up well to going on consecutive days. My current schedule is Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday morning.

Thanks for the repliessorry for spamming the extra question here.

I train boxing at John's Gym in Austin and don't want to drop that. I'm looking to start BJJ, and Gracie Barra Cedar Park offers a 6am class that fits my schedule, so I'd train BJJ there.

Occasionally, I'd also like to drop into John's BJJ classes when my schedule allows.

I understand I'd need to pick a "home" BJJ gym for belt evaluation, and John's recommended training at Gracie exclusively until I get a few stripes or reach blue belt before cross-training.

Any insight from the pros here or disagree with the approach above?

Interesting that they told you to train at the Gracies when they do BJJ themselves, unless its just a scheduling difference. I live in Georgetown, so I know some of the guys from John's.

If you are in Cedar Park or Austin, you might want to check out Gracie Humaita, in either Cedar Park or on Ben White in Austin.

Was a little surprised too. They didn't have issue with cross training bjj, just from a learning standpoint recommended not doing it yet as it could cause some confusion in new concepts.

I figured it would be opposite and expedite my ramp up.

The dude at John's again just gave his recommendation, he was a white belt. If I learn from others that cross training early does make more sense then ill still just do that as it was my original plan and just select one as the "home" bjj gym for belt evals.

(I looked at Gracie Humaita as well, although its about 12 mins from my house. Gracie Barra is literally 2 mins which helps with the 6am aspect.)

The owner/Lead Instructor of my gym, Gracie Humaita, Austin received his Coral Belt in Rio this past month.
However, we are also hosting a ceremony & seminar here so that this students, friends & others can come take part as well.

Royler Gracie will be giving a 2 hour Seminar, then the ceremonial belt promotion.

Royler Gracie Seminar/Paulo Brandao Coral Belt Ceremony

Evening of February 28th @ Bob Bullock Museum, Downtown Austin. 6pm.

We had the Austin/Texas/US version of my instructor, Paulo Brando's Coral Belt ceremony this weekend. The Seminar was fairly light, there was a good amount of socializing going on. Instructors from all over Texas and a few from other states were in, I counted roughly 110 participants, not counting all of the families, press etc that were also there.

This next generation of Coral Belts will be coming. I know the guy that owns Gracie Humaita Las Vegas is only one year behind Paulo. All those guys that knew the Gracies in the 90s, then came to the US are coming due for it. At present, Paulo is the highest ranked Jiu Jitsu practitioner in Austin.

Very cool ceremony and great pics! My instructor from white-through-black belt (Vinicius 'Draculino' Magalhaes at GBTX in Webster, TX) recently received his Coral belt at Gracie Barra HQ in Brazil. Lots of big names in attendance as well.

Drac is only two months younger than me, and I can't imagine entering a tournament and seeing him in my division. His BJJ is still crazy good and his instruction / teaching is, and has always been, phenomenal.

  • Hyper extended elbow
  • Bloody lip
  • Swollen likely sprained finger
  • Throat feels like Covid
I'm getting my ass beat lol, its extremely fun though. My focus as a brand new white belt has been learning each position, learning how to escape basic scenarios, overall rolling slow and just try not to get submitted (make the other guy exhausted since my offense is trash).

Any other recommendations? Explicit tips welcomed, the generic 'just breath' or 'just show up' is already known.

Glad you're having fun! I just got done coaching a class of mostly white belts tonight.....so here's a list of some of the stuff I remember telling people who were sometimes struggling...

  • Work the 'move of the day' into whatever situational or live training you do in class, even if it's not your 'comfort zone'.
  • When you get hit with the same sweep, pass, sub, etc. ask your training partner or instructor for some hints/tips on addressing it.
  • When you feel a hand deep in your collar, stop everything else, clear the hand and get your posture back.
  • Keep your friends close and your elbows closer.
  • It's generally a good idea to never let your hands touch the floor.
  • Don't let your arm get pulled across center line or your back will soon be taken.
  • Don't do wrist locks and ankle locks as a white belt. It's not that they won't work, but they are low percentage, often result in sacrificing a good position, and are a poor substitute for controlling distance, posture, grips and guard passing.
  • Never give up control of your head (I.e., cross face). It's better to get your guard passed but maintain frames to keep your head mobile than to fight for leg control (and give up the cross face).
  • Whether on top or bottom, be in a constant state of positional improvement, even if your 'attacks' are slow, subtle moves, shifting of the hips, adjustment of grip, etc.
  • Roll with upper belts when you can. You'll learn a lot more in 'losing' to them than you will beating up fellow white belts.

-train 3 hours per day
-instead of learning a thousand techniques, do one technique a thousand times
-take chances, make mistakes, hone from there
-wash your gi

Lol when I got my elbow caught, I felt a couple clicks. It was a little tingly and the pain didnt come till later along with slight swelling. Thankfully it feels fine now (for the most part).

Btw reading all the serious suggestions and noting, really appreciate it. Today was really fun, some more stuff made sense. My focus on defense is paying off it seems, was able to survive a few rounds with no submissions aside from a purple belt getting an arm bar on me. My gauge for progress is probably off, but I'm just comparing to my first couple sessions where everyone had their way with me.

Surviving is good. Escaping is best.

If you allow yourself just to survive, you may not develop the feel for how you need to escape.

Additionally, learning how to escape from all bad positions will give you the confidence to grow your offensive game. You see newer BJJ practitioners sometimes not attacking an opening due to fear of ending up in a bad position.

It's a balance for sure.

Some days you will be the hammer, some days you will be the nail.

Learn from both of them & stay humble.

You are 1000% better off that those that don't train.

Rolker Gracie seminar was no joke. Took my niece to open mat for her first BJJ lesson ever. She had no idea who he was but she did great. She did some basic self defense stuff in open mat and the beginners class before the Seminar started. One of the teaching Black Belts paired up with her during the seminar so she would be safe.

I on the other hand got the Imperial HELL choked out of me....

Very cool, sounds like y'all had a great time!!!

It's always amazing to train with older grapplers and to see how little effort they use, and how they still get to great positions and sink in crazy deep chokes.

Went to a buddys black belt promotion this weekend and they gave me a dang brown belt.

I have enough emotional damage from all the brown belts over my training career that I know what is expected of me now. I remember thinking "Matt/Josh/Kevin/Steven are nice, but I also think they legitimately want to kill me."

bas***ds. Hold off on that black belt for as long as possible. Congrats.
