I'd rather Pay Manu 14mm over the next two years than Jeremy Lin 20mm over the next two years or Steve Nash 19mm over the next two years or Tayshaun Prince 15mm over the next two years or Gerald Wallce 31mm over the next 3 years or Joe Johnson 70mm over the next 3 years or Carlos Boozer 32mm over the next 2 years or Tyrus Thomas 18mm over the next two years.

I think Manu deserved closer to 2y8m, but 2y14 isn't ridiculously terrible.

$7 mil a year is fine. Makes a heck of a lot more sense than the Tiago Splitter deal

Splitter was getting the same offer from Portland. A 4y35m deal is about his worth on the market.

Except that Jeremy Lin gets Les Alexander and the Rockets a heck of a lot of marketability and $$$ in the Asian market. I'm well convinced that Jeremy Lin was more of an Alexander decision and less of a Daryl Morey decision due in large part to the financial benefits he brings. So in that sense, his contract is beneficial. He is overpaid based on his play on the court, just as Ginobili is. But he brings a lot more to the table that would justify his contract from an owner's perspective

Some perspective.

The combined salaries of Tim, Tony and Manu next season will be slightly less than the salary the Lakers will pay to Kobe. And that's without accounting for tens of millions in luxury tax.

Rockets had the Asian market before Lin and will have it after Lin. The Chinese didnt leave in 2012.

Why round Lin's up to $20mm but not Nash's or the others? Lin's deal is slightly less than $17mm, not $20mm.

Lin gets paid over 5mm this year and slightly under 15mm next year. He gets just over 20mm.

$5,225,000 $14,898,938

Incorrect. $8.375mm both years.

Sorry, you are wrong. He counts as over 8mm as a cap hit, but the Rockets back loaded his contract to keep the Knicks from matching. THe way they back loaded it, they get to average his salaries over the three years of the contract, but they still pay it out as 5.x, 5.x 15.x. Same with Asik.

So it only counts as 8mm on the cap next year, but the Rockets will be paying him $15mm.

You may hang your head in shame.

How would that work if they traded them? They'd be on the books for a different amount than they're actually paid. It would make no sense. But then again salary cap rules can be weird...

The rules are a little unclear, but the consensus is that he counts the same way for his new team as he would for the Rockets. So they would be on the hook for 2y20mm and change, but it would only count 8.4/yr on the cap.

Fair enough I stand corrected. I thought in the NBA particularly, what you get paid is your cap number and vice versa. Shouldn't assume when it comes to salary rules.

One year to learn without pressure during the tank job, then next offseason they draft top 3 and move some expiring contracts for useful pieces.

Ulrich, great thought. Next years super deep draft makes it a perfect time to blow up a team and start from scratch. And what better chance for Stevens to come in and learn on the job with little pressure. I hope the Mavs can come out of this with Rondo.

mavs working on monta ellis deal to attract dwight. apparently monta and dwight are best buds.
dont like monta in dallas, but if it brings dwight all for it.

if they strike out on everybody, i really hope they send dirk to a contender and start over. will be heartbreak for me, but last thing we need is dirk playing on a 30 win team..

I read somewhere that Al Jeff was waiting for the Dwight sweepstakes to be over because he thinks Dallas might offer if they miss out.

Tyreke Evans agreed to sign an offer sheet w/ the Pelicans for 4 yrs 44 mill on July 10th. Kings have 3 days to match. Evans has stated repeatedly he doesn't want to play in Sacramento.

I disagree. The Splitter deal makes a lot of sense. You have to consider two things when determining the price you're willing to pay.

One, what role does this player have and how could you replace it?

Two, what will he get if he leaves?

With Splitter he plays a very large role especially defensively. He struggled against Miami but he is essential against the big teams like the Clippers, Grizzlies, OKC and now the Nets. He's also a big deal when you face Dwight Howard whoever he lands with. The only viable replacements were Al Jefferson and Pecovic. Both of those guys would be more expensive and don't currently know the Spurs sytstem. And then Tiago would be able to get a similar deal elsewhere. I think it works.

As for Manu, I don't like the price. He's got to be getting some sentimental benefit here. Pop has done that before. I would rather they lowball Manu and try to add another piece. I think Manu is a 20 minute per game spark at this point. Nobody would have paid him this kind of money to do that (but really you never know).
