I like Dallas's starting 5 a lot, parsons is an upgrade at the SF spot, and I think a rejuvenated Chandler will be an upgrade over Dalembert. Bench is a little thin, but I think overall they are a better team.

Anyone watching summer league? Eric griffin has been a big surprise. Dude attacks the rim like Brandon Bass used to for the mavs. He doesn't have nearly the 15 foot jumper Bass did... But the guy can play.

Mekel has been pretty awful when I've watched. Not sure what the Donnie N sees in him

Ok I read this article and now I'm fully on board with parsons.

@espn_macmahon: RT @SpearsNBAYahoo: New Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons tells Yahoo he was "offended" by how the Rockets treated him in free agency. http://t.co/A0bGoil3QW/s/GEvv

quote:
"Honestly, I was offended by the whole process," Parsons told Yahoo Sports on Monday in a phone interview. "They publicly said that they were going out looking for a third star when I thought they had one right in front of them. I guess that's just how they viewed me as a player. I don't think I've scratched the surface of where I can be as a player and I think I'm ready for that role.

"You can't knock them for always trying to get better. [Houston general manager] Daryl Morey is very aggressive, is a genius, a great GM and I have nothing but respect for those guys. And they are looking to make their team better. That's what they were doing. I just thought I could be that guy that could do that."

quote:
Parsons said he is close with Cuban, loves Dallas and added that he believes he can compete with a championship in Dallas with Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis.

"Dallas is the perfect match to where I am in my career," Parsons said. "It's where I can take that next step. They have a great organization. Mark is the best owner in all of sports. I get a chance to play with Dirk for however much longer he has. It will be unbelievable to learn and grown from him and the guys they have.

"We got a chance to win. Coach [Rick] Carlisle is the best coach in the NBA. It's the perfect situation for me. I'm ready for more leadership. I'm ready for a bigger role. They came at me with a high max offer and viewed me as a franchise player. That's what I wanted."

Parsons played a strong role in convincing Howard to sign as a free agent with the Rockets last summer. They could be free agents in 2016. And if things go well in Dallas, don't be surprised if Parsons tries to convince Howard to join him.

"I'm the best recruiter in the NBA," Parsons said. "Whatever Mark and the Mavericks need, they got me to do that."

Dirk officially signed. Supposedly he took even a larger pay cut that previously advertised. 3/25 deal!

Wow, Dirk must really love Cuban. Or, he doesn't quite understand the dollar to Euro exchange.

More like ahead of Roger Staubach, Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman, and Nolan Ryan.

You're the best Dirk.

Nowitzki will never be more loved in Dallas than Staubach (2 SBs), Aikman (3 SBs), and Smith (3 SBs). Dallas is still a football city.

A German being more loved than All-American Roger Staubach.

What is wrong with you Dallasites?

It probably has a lot to do with the depths the Mavs used to be in, as one of the lowliest sports franchises and he he took them to become one of the consistently best.

Also the Cowboys love gets spread around to a lot of great players. The Stars gave us Mikey Mo, the Rangers gave us Nolan, but Dirk eclipses both of them because of tenure with his team and accomplishments.

And then you throw in the fact he's super nice, down to earth, has a goofball sense of humor, and clearly not in it for the money.

He's just one of the truly good, good, good guys in all of sports.

(Roger is amazing too, don't get me wrong)

Dirk is definitely more loved in dallas than aikman/smith. Neither if those two were a fan/community friendly and neither were too nice of guys. Dirk beats them by a long shot in that regard. Plus basketball is a little more personal than football just bc you don't wear a helmet, fans are so close, etc.

Dirk is #1 on dallas sports Mount Rushmore. Obviously I'm biased but I think he's a pretty clear #1. But everyone pretty much agrees he's #1, even if it is close (residents and sports talk hosts).

It's generational. The olds love Roger more than Jesus. Dirk and Troy are next in line and probably tied at this point although younger folks obviously trend towards Dirk.

Modano and Pudge are probably more loved than Emmit or Irvin at this point. Nolan, too.

I agree that it's generational. As a Cowboys fan Dirk doesn't rank above the triplets for me but they are above Staubach.

Non basketball fans will not put him above well liked Cowboys.

Roger is a class act. However, it's been over 30 years since he last played.

Dirk brought a championship to the Metroplex just 3 years ago.

Dirk is a class act too. He's just a more recent champion, and one (like Roger) that has spent his whole career in Dallas.

You rank the triplets over Dirk and Staubach? That has to be because of the 3 rings in 4 years. As far as character, none of them comes close to Dirk or Roger.

I'd agree with you on Smith, but Aikman is definitely a solid community guy.

Mavs signed a couple of cadavers in Lewis and Jefferson, but if they can get 35-40% from 3 from those guys it's a minimal risk investment and adds floor spacing. Dallas looks to remain one of the worst defenses in basketball however.

I don't know that I would call them cadavers. Jefferson averaged 10 points a game last year, but yeah, obviously they are getting up there in age.

As you said, they are pretty much loaded now with guys that can launch the 3 (Dirk, Ellis, Parsons, Jefferson and now Lewis).

Perimeter D will be an issue, obviously. However, along with Chandler protecting the rim, they have good length at the 3 (Nelson said Parsons is 6'10") and 4 (Dirk is 7). That alone is going to frustrate some shooters. If this Smith guy can stay healthy, he should be a good interior defender as well.

The Mavs still have their 2.7 mil available. No doubt looking for a decent SG who can play some perimeter D. Ledo has been tearing up the Summer League but not sure he is ready for any significant minutes.

Not true. Sports radio in Dallas already frequently talks about how Dirk is now the #1 all-time sports hero in Dallas history.

I think it is difficult to define a player’s legacy to a community before retirement, especially comparing his legacy to players who have been retired for awhile. That said, as a kid who remembers feeling a glimmer of hope one year when the Mavs hit 30 wins with the three Js, Dirk is and will always be my sports hero.
