This is Babe Ruth territory. I bet Nico is out of a job within the month, but the damage is already done.

Exactly hah. If anything it'd make their lives easier since they could spin it as "well, he wanted out."

I'm not a Mavs fan but I am a Luka fan so I kept up with the Mavs by default. I woke up from a long mid-day Sunday nap to this news and I'm laying here trying to wrap my head around this. This makes no sense.

He's 25 years old. Absolutely stunned

Nico must have inklings that Luka wasnt going to re-sign here. This is the only thing that makes sense at the moment
Kind of wild to think he would just walk away from a 5-year $345 million super-max deal.

Honestly, I think Nico was just being a complete dumbass here...the return makes no sense. They should have gotten way more for Luka.

This feels like a type of deal in fantasy football that one of your buddies texts you about and you are so shocked they'd even propose the idea that you have to try and act like you aren't too excited so they will actually propose it in the app.
I don't think Luka would have walked away, though. I think he would have signed it and just kept half assing his conditioning like he has been. There isn't really a history of European stars forcing their way out like there is with American stars (Kawhi, AD, Durant, Harden, etc)

Yeah, Luka wasn't at risk of leaving in free agency. He'd have been leaving $100 million on the table.

I'm probably coping, but the Mavs were absolutely going to be stuck in a cycle of Luka being perpetually overweight and unhealthy while also always wanting to play in Euro tournaments. Luka loves representing Slovenia and he was never going to be a guy who would take a summer off to recover. He also wasn't going to be a guy who took conditioning or reshaping his body seriously. He may do that now with a new "f you" mentality, but there was no inkling of that changing while he was here.

ETA: He still was a top 3 player with the conditioning and injury issues, so I'm not just ****ting on him. But let's also not act like we hadn't been talking about his weight and his on court antics before the finals run. The finals run made a lot of talking points go away, but we kinda got a glimpse of his capped ceiling against teams that can switch and will make him defend.

Fine, but a 2029 1st round pick, probably 25th at best, a guy nick-named Street Clothes, and a 3rd center for a team that already had the best rotation in the league?

Whataburger is just way over-priced. Braum's is the best by far, then Culver's. In-n-Out is affordable. Whataburger combo is $12 or more. Ridiculous.

Other than Wemby, name one player in the entire league that Dallas couldn't have gotten for Luka.

There are arguments for Jokic, Ant, SGA, and Giannis.

I would assume that most teams recognize the value of a fanbase's attachment to high-level players like that.

SGA is a Mav in a heartbeat. So are Joker and Giannis.

Ant. No disrespect, but bwahaha. Brown, Tatum...in a heartbeat.

Didn't say he's better than all of them right now. No need to call names. I go back to Jim Spanarkel and Scott Lloyd.

On paper, I agree.

I do think that some FOs might balk at a deal that moves a homegrown superstar, even if it is an upgrade. One thing we should know from the last 24 hours is that merely working at the highest level in an NBA FO does not make you a genius.

Yes, I wasn't counting fan-love. That's part of the business. I was just referring to the LeBron James, Magic Johnson ability to get anywhere on the court for any shot or any pass as a centerpiece for the next 10 years.

No doubt Luca could go down in flames soon:

Weight issues (270)
Lazy at times
Whiner
Constant injury issues
Extremely expensive
He's been playing professionally 10 years. Doesn't take care of himself.
Teammates getting tired of his show.

I was always angry that with his talent and magic that if he put in the time, took care of his body, and didn't play year round that he could bring championships.

He just might be done.

But damn, I loved watching him play!

Respectfully, he averages 33 pts/gm a season ago. I dont think he's done

Yep, it's all dwelling on the negative and letting one forget what kind of freak talent he is. That's exactly what Nico did. And at 25, definitely not too old to learn he needs to get his conditioning approach together.

Only first that is worth anything is Charlotte's pick this year. And it will likely be towards the middle of the lottery in a draft that falls off a cliff after the first few.

They also didn't get a top 10 player…

I've thought about it all day and I'm done with the Mavs for the foreseeable future. Not sure who, if anyone, I will root for yet, but it won't be this ownership group and front office.

I'm all in on the Stars and my wife will be happy we don't have basketball games to watch anymore.

I know you've been gut punched and I feel bad for Mavs fans but if you think they'd get SGA "in a heartbeat" I have to strongly disagree. OKC has been built on defense and switchable wings. Luka is not that in the mold even a little bit. He's a top 5 player but to assume the Thunder would jump at the chance to lose SGA for him is speculative at best. And silly at worst.
