I feel awful for him because he really seemed to have loved Dallas and was thinking Dallas may be his home for the next 15+ years (which is backed up by the fact that he was going to be closing on a home soon).
And everyone in Dallas loved Luka like a family member except Nico apparently. Luka could walk into any business or house in the area and be welcomed with open arms. In my lifetime, only the triplets and Dirk were this adored by the DFW sports community
Adrian Beltre, Nolan Ryan, and Pudge Rodriguez.

Im sure Troy Aikmen and Emmit Smith would like to have a word with you

Tatu and Mike Modano

Yeah, let's be honest. The DFW sports community has a huge list of guys they love. That city has seen a bunch of guys that played there for a long time

He looks miserable. I hope he puts up 100 when he returns to Dallas.
Luka is about to become a billionaire living in LA. Promotions, advertising, etc.. Dude will build a mansion with $100 bills.

He'll be just fine. The Mavs long term tho...

I think it's a blow to Luka's ego more than anything. I do think he genuinely embraced dallas...hard not to when the city showed so much love and considering he came over so young and it was his first home here in the US. But, to be a global star and be traded cuz you're "fat and lazy" essentially, has to be maddening. He could have had LA or NYC or Miami in mind as his next move from the jump and yet seemed content to stay in DFW and get a ring or 2 here.

I still can't get past the biz aspect of it. The Mavs are worth less today than they were 4 days ago. You just dumped one of the most valuable and most marketable athletes on the planet.

The Mavs weren't going to be able to afford Grimes after this season. Grimes was also redundant with Christie. They may be listed at similar heights, but Martin can guard bigger wings, unlike Grimes. Martin has also been to the finals and had a pretty memorable series against the Celtics in the conference finals. I liked Grimes, but this move makes sense on the court.

It makes no sense why we had to give Philadelphia their 2nd round pick back. Was going to be a decent 2nd rounder. The league probably knows Nico is flailing now. More moves are probably in the works, those will probably be overpays also...

Pelinka requested to speak with Luka's agent before proceeding with the trade and that Nico, fearful that Luka's agent would flip his **** over the deal, because it would cost his client $116m
That's an interesting point. How strong is the NBA players union? Because Luka, his agent, and the union have every right to be very, very upset about this and wreak havoc

It won't really cost him $116M. Just 116M in upfront guarantees.

He will probably sign a 2+1 max deal then sign his supermax in two years when he's eligible for the 35%. Bron and Kawhi did the same thing.
It's not a union issue as the player isn't required to be consulted if they don't have a no trade clause, but it is leverage in the hands of Pelinka/a point of contention that can be used in negotiations. Pelinka can say "if I don't get to talk to the agent then I risk acquiring a disgruntled player, I risk getting a player that's less committed to working than he was with you and your concerns get amplified here."

Make no mistake, his agent would scoff at the loss of access to a super max and leak the trade before it happened to lower the odds it would occur, which is why Nico wanted to keep it secret. Pelinka can use that desire for secrecy to retain assets.

Sure, but that's pretty much the list over the past 40 years. Tatu, certainly in my book, as the unquestioned GOAT, and if you agree that MISL is a thing.

And Modano, if you agree that NHL is a thing.

Dallas is going to draw LA in the playoffs, and Luka will orchestrate a sweep by averaging 40/20/15.

I'm hoping we somehow draw them. It will be wild with 95% of the AAC cheering for Luka and the lakers.

Swapping out a 24 year old for a 29 year old with all of the same stats.

I have no idea what the Mavs are doing anymore. It seems like they are definitely giving away their future for nothing in return.
Agreed.

We spent a 2nd rounder, to get rid of a younger player with the same stats.

Grimes was going to get the mid-level next year, which is the difference of about 1-2 million a year. We could have afforded him, and he is the EXACT type of player we should be targeting.

Such a confusing move.

Windhorst just went on ESPN and said the Mavs had conversations with Grimes about signing an extension and couldn't agree on a deal, so they decided to move on and trade him. No idea what the Mavs were offering, but just passing along that tidbit if it helps make sense of this.

I get it, minus the 2nd like you said. Makes even more sense with the extension talks rumor, but damn that 2nd could've been nice....and obv we'll need some youth after the AD and Martin moves (assuming we keep Martin)

Yeah, apparently before the fall they wanted to give him 9-10 per, and he wanted 12 (mid-level). They didnt agree, so they dropped the discussions and traded him.

I'd rather have kept the second.

We basically gave away a 2nd round pick to save 1-2 million a year.

They tried to negotiate the extension before the season, but Grimes decided to bet on himself, and extension talks ended before the season started. Grimes has done well enough where someone will pay him over $10 million probably. Mavs can't have that with guys like Gafford, Naji, PJ, and Klay (now Martin too) all making in the 9-15 range.

I don't think I believe that Grimes is a MLE-area free agent. If he was asking in the 10M area, letting him go is right rather than lose him for nothing.

I like Martin much more as a defender.

Grimes' closest defender shooting percentage numbers are pretty crazy, but they don't really match the eye test. He's not near as good at navigating screens as I thought he'd be.

Apart from winning a title, I really don't think he'll ever be able to show his face in Dallas again. I certainly don't agree with him getting death threats but what happened felt like an act of betrayal.

I'm genuinely not sure that even winning a title with this bunch would change attitudes towards him. There are certain players that certain fanbases would rather lose with than win without.

There's also a difference between great players and players who are great to watch. Tim Duncan was an all time great player, but not a guy kids show their friends highlights of. Luka is a guy that every time he's out there you have a god chance of seeing something amazing, possibly that you've never seen before. And I don't think winning alone addresses the loss of that.

Luka is one of the most entertaining players I've ever seen. His playstyle would fit right in with the Harlem Globetrotters, and his gestures and facial expressions are priceless. You can just tell he is having so much fun playing. Jordan was fun to watch like that. Iverson is another one. Even some great players aren't entertaining. Kobe comes to mind. Guy could score 60 in a game and look like his dog just died.

I'm not gonna like, I want to see the Mavs get healthy, gel and then make a run through the playoffs where they make the playin then beat OKC in the first round, Lakers in the second, Rockets in the conference Finals then Boston in the Finals.

Also, after the Lakers series, a pic comes up of Luka like Urban Meyer's Pizza pic, but with beer.

Also the Spurs win the lottery with the Hawks pick
