I will say this as though. I heard AD had a great session with the physical therapist this morning. Those elastic bands really got worked over.

The Irving injury talk reminds me of discussing A&M's qb injuries under Fisher.

Yeah, the mechanism of the injury might be unique or a freak thing, but the fact is, the more you expose your qbs to hits, the greater the chance of a freak injury happening. Same thing with Kyrie, the more he has to play and drive the lane, the greater the chances of him getting hurt.

Also, Cuban refers to "making a mistake" several times in that interview.

He never comes out and just says that trading Luka was a mistake, but it's obvious that that is how he thinks of it in his mind b/c he indirectly references it as being a mistake multiple times.

Exactly. Did it directly cause it? Probably not. Does putting his body under stress more than anyone else in the league over the past month increase the chances of something bad happening? Absolutely.

It also boils down to this - when you build your team around old guys with a history of getting hurt, you can't call it bad luck when they get hurt.

I don't think it was a league conspiracy, but I also sure don't think Nico minded giving the Lakers a long-term boost with the thought that it will pay off for him personally some day. I think he stupidly thought he could win a title here with AD this year or next, then could ride off to that next gig seen as a champion but also thought well of in LA (and with major players in the business with ties in some way to the Lakers doing well - which is a long list). Instead he's the biggest joke in sports

I think you are all overthinking it all.

It was about the "SuperMax contract". If they didn't trade him, they were on the hook for a 5-year, $345 million dollar super-max extension.

They didn't want to pay Luka 69 million-a-year. It's that simple.

Money, power and ***** make the world go round'.

Even if they didn't want to pay him that, you have to get fair value and AD, Christie and a first isn't close to fair value.

When Kevin Durant was 34, Phoenix paid 4 unprotected 1sts, 1 unprotected swap. 2 unprotected 2nds, Mikal Bridges (flipped for 5 unprotected firsts and a 2nd) and Cameron Johnson (putting up 19p on 48/40 shooting this year)

No doubt the Mavs didn't get full value.

But that's not what my post is about. My post is only about WHY the Mavs even traded him at all.

Nailed it.

No doctor can say "excessive playing time wasn't a factor". They just can't. Stress is stress.

Was it likely or not? That's really what their opinion is... but to say "not a factor" is 100% BS... because we just don't know if it was a contributing factor, nor will we ever know. That's how stress works.

And further to your point, if your team has an excessive rash of injuries, it's fair to point that out. Coincidence or trend, that's debatable, but it is still a debate.

I don't even believe that had anything to do with it based on 2 reasons:

  • Like, ok so you pay Luka $345m in a salary cap league, you're still able to work around that. The Mavs haven't paid the tax since what? 2010? It will be hard, but you can still operate under the 1st apron even with that contract.

  • And even if I concede the idea that Luka would put them deep into the tax; guess what? HE'S STILL LUKA FREAKING DONCIC AND LUKA DONCIC IS GREAT FOR BUSINESS. Ticket sales, jersey sales, merch, national tv exposure, etc....Luka's revenue impact to the organization alone would far outstrip his salary. He's the single biggest asset the organization had and he will be well underpaid to what he brings in revenue sales.

At the end of the day the reason he was traded was because Nico Harrison is dumb and disliked Luka on a personal level. He let personal feelings get in the way of business, because there's no rational business logic to trading a 25 yr old superstar.

Any money they "saved" by not paying the super max they are losing in concession/merchandise and ticket sales. They absolutely misread the situation and royally effed up. I can't believe it's been over a month and I am still annoyed about a professional sports management issue.

The immediate revenue impact has to be staggering. And they haven't seen yet just how many season ticket holders are not renewing.

The supermax argument is just dumb because (1) they chose to pay injury riddled, 31-33 year old AD $60mm - you're scared of paying Luka $70 for a few more years than that? And (2) they will end up maxing out some spare along the lines of a Wesley Mathews or Spencer Dinwiddie to come here. NBA teams pretty much all land within a fairly tight band in terms of total salary

Naji Marshall is really good at basketball. Caleb Martin is good at basketball. Max Christie is good at basketball.

People who think the roster isn't primed for a run next year don't know anything about basketball.
