Obviously talk is cheap, but it's interesting that we've heard from Keldon, Malaki, and now Mamu and Wesley about working this offseason to be better defensively. Seems like a pretty clear message was sent that you have to be able to defend if you want to have a shot of being part of the teams future.

I'm not holding my breath on Malaki.

I would love to see Keldon just progress to average, but he has the strength and quickness to be good.

Wesley is so quick, he can be elite if he develops. He doesn't turn 22 until mid-March, so he should basically be a college senior or RSJR.

I think Mamu is always going to be a depth guy. He seems to mesh well with Wemby so anything he can do is welcome. He passes well and his defense already seems decent. Him developing a 35-40% 3pt shot is the most important thing to his usefulness imo.

I was more making the observation that it seems defense was a major emphasis this offseason. IMO it's a clear signal from the top down that we're moving out of rebuilding and into competing. Doesn't mean that we're going to be title contenders right away, but some of the mistakes that guys had a little leeway with while we were experimenting and evaluating won't be tolerated anymore.

Yeah, I think that is right. I think Mamu and Wesley are already wired like that, too.

But Keldon really slimmed down and you can tell he is putting in the work. I wonder if getting the new role and bringing in Barnes really lit a fire under him. And you have to say our weakest position is forward.

I'm sure these guys see all the trade rumors and know that the Spurs have to upgrade the talent across the board, but especially at those positions. Spurs's big moves this summer was getting players that play the positions that Keldon, Branham, and Wesley play. If you wanna ride the Wemby gravy train more than just this year, you better get up to speed real damn quick.
