First mini-trailers didn't really do anything for me.
This does.

looks like a typical disaster movie to me. if it gets good reviews i'll probably see it. maybe i'm just put off of it by the crappy experience of pacific rim.

Why is Cranston in this? To me, it's like as if Anthony Hopkins appeared in the Matthew Broderick version after collecting his awards on Silence of the Lambs. Cranston just finished arguably the greatest show ever and he follows it up with Godzilla? Was Jeepers Creepers 3 not available?

Besides the $$$, could it be because it actually has a good script? And he wanted to work with talented people? Look, this may very well end up sucking, but with the team involved, equating it to something like Jeepers Creepers 3 is just nearsighted and dumb.

I'm sure Cranston could have picked just about anything he wanted and they would have paid him $$$. If I were him I would have branched out from the Walter White role, but to do a monster flick? I'm afraid he is going the Cuba Gooding Jr. Snow Dogs route.

I'm confused why you're so assuredly writing this one off? Who cares if it's a "monster flick"? If not the subject matter, it's usually the team involved that attracts actors to projects, and this movie has an extremely talented team of filmmakers behind it. Again, I have no idea if it'll actually be worth a damn, but it definitely has a ton of potential. There's a reason why actors like Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche, and David Strathairn committed to it.

That looks shockingly okay.

Funny twist to make it a sequel (of sorts) to the original movie.

He's probably writing it off because there have been a zillion big destruction/monster/CGI-heavy movies in the last 20 years, and very few of them have been what most of us would consider great films.

Lots of them have had big name actors that we like in them that look like they've been simply earning a paycheck.

Billy Bob in Armageddon
Broderick in the other Godzilla movie
William H Macy and Tea Leoni in Jurassic Park 3
Whoever was in 2012, which I have successfully repressed from my memory.
Frances McDormand and John Malkovich in Transformers 3

I know you're dying for this to be really good, TC, but most of us are pretty skeptical when it comes to big destruction movies. It's hard for anyone to deliver a new take on it.

I think the trailer makes it look good, but I thought the same thing about Pearl Harbor. This might be another transformers. Where a bunch guys on here were excited as hell, and it ended up being crappy. My point is that if you are Cranston, and you have just come off the role that will probably define your life's work, and you can now pick nearly ANY role that you want, why would you pick this one out of them all?

I totally understand the skepticism. And there's not much of a precedent for these kinds of films to be great. My only point was that it's not Jeepers Creepers 3, or even the '98 Godzilla. There's a talented team behind this one. Cranston could have simply wanted to work with any combination of Gareth Edwards / Frank Darabont / Seamus McGarvey / Alexandre Desplat / Ken Watanabe/ Juliette Binoche / David Strathairn / etc. This one does seem to have talent both behind and infront of the camera that is a cut above those films mentioned a couple posts back. Now, whether that talent will amount to anything special, who knows.

Also, not that it really matters, but Crantson technically shot this before filming the final eight episodes of Breaking Bad.

I used to think cranston was typecasted too well as the dad from Malcom in the middle. But he did such a good job in BB that if I don't see him do at least one cook in Godzilla I'm going to be disappointed.

The Jeepers Creepers crack was a joke. But you got to admit that Cranston could have picked any white male role that wasn't Santa Clause (and maybe him too).

But it's not like Godzilla is the only movie he can do - or has done - post-Breaking Bad. He already had an indie release in January with Alice Eve called Cold Comes the Night. He's wrapped a comedy called Get a Job with Alison Brie, Anna Kendrick, and Miles Teller that comes out later this year. He's voicing a character in Kung Fu Panda 3. And he just signed to star in Holland, Michigan, which was the voted the top unproduced script of 2013, and will likely be some kind of Oscar fair. So it looks like he's doing a little bit of everything - including a giant blockbuster - which is what most of the great actors do.

Godzilla is just one part of the picture. And if I were one of the most popular actors in town, coming off one of the most popular shows ever, and I had to check "summer blockbuster" off my list, out of what he had to choose from, Godzilla was easily the best choice, as far as summer 2014 tentpoles go. He has to bring in that big paycheck somehow, so he can afford to do the smaller, more Oscar-friendly stuff, which is exactly what he's doing.

It's the first project that 90% of people will have heard of.

True. But again, with no steady paycheck now, he's gotta do a blockbuster or two in order to do the smaller, "better" stuff.

He made $3.6M his final season. That's not shabby. I think he could have asked for good money for many roles except those in small indy films.

The role seems a little beneath him, don't you think? The dude can act. You don't need much acting ability to say, "holy crap.. there's Godzilla!!" In fact, the clip in this trailer seems like the producers said, "we got this great actor.. let's find a way to get him to say something really emotional." It's like asking Niel Pert to play along with a barber shop quartet, and asking him to throw in a kickass drum solo because he's the best in the world.. might as well use him.

Why is Robert Redford in Captain America 2? He even said he wanted to step into a role he has never done before, and a summer blockbuster provided that. Get over it

Doing voice overs are different. Robert Di Nero does those too. But you didn't see him following the Godfather 2 with the Airport 1975 disaster movie. Instead he followed it with Taxi Driver, which went down as one of the greatest movies of all time. Even though Airport 1975 grossed almost twice the amount of money as Taxi Driver, nobody thinks he made the wrong choice.

Cameos or other small roles are also different. Tom Cruise was awesome in Tropic Thunder, for example. Imagine if Marlin Brando tried to play Superman instead of Jor-El for 15 minutes. That would have been beneath him. By the time you are already well established like Di Nero or Redford, you can do things like Showtime or Capatain America 2. They got nothing to prove anymore.

Right now, Cranston needs to prove that he can be more than a sitcom dad or Walter White. He needs his Taxi Driver.
Bruce Almighty

Maybe he just doesn't give a **** about having his "Taxi Driver". Not every actor cares about awards and going down as an all time great.

Interesting take on the Pacific nuclear tests.

I'm intrigued for sure.
