He is not even close to being in the same class as Daniel Day Lewis.
He's not now, but he is in the position to climb up there. Appearing in Godzilla doesn't help him do that.

I get that you guys really, really like Breaking Bad... and I assure you, I do too.

But Daniel Day Lewis??? You are kidding yourself.

Yeah, nothing about BB screamed "Next Daniel Day Lewis" to me.

In fact, his "emotional" scenes usually make me laugh. I have the feeling his sobbing/screaming scenes in Godzilla will be about the same.

I like Cranston, but some of you are over-reaching here.

And what makes you think he has any desire to be the same kind of actor as Daniel Day Lewis? The guy doesn't need to prove anything to anyone.

I think a lot of the comments about this just being a monster movie (and how that possibly should have impacted Cranston's decision) are missing something:

This isn't just any monster movie. This is one of the most well known giant movie monsters in history. There are going to be a ton of people that see this BECAUSE it is Godzilla. The people in charge of the franchise specifically took a 10 year or however long hiatus to ensure they put something high quality together. This isn't some thrown together junk. The people involved are taking this seriously, and trying to put together a genuinely good movie about a movie monster that has been insanely famous for decades.

Why NOT do it?

He’s not in the same class now. But if he chooses his roles carefully, like DDL did, then after 10 years he could be.

Um, are there "real" assumptions about a made-up monster?

As for the movie, I'll be seeing it. Looks like a good "guy movie".

The original Godzilla is a good movie. It's serious, it shows the results of Godzilla's rampage, and the human characters are cheesy but not bad. This movie is going for the same vibe from the looks of it, and with the crew assembled, could very well pull it off.

In 10 years Cranston will be almost 70.

I think you are grossly overinflating his stature in Hollywood.

huge potential spoiler alert based on something i read online that may or may not be true.

This movie will probably have good cinematography. But 2/3rds the way through the film, when things are the darkest and hope is nearly lost, someone will come up with a silver bullet to defeat the monster.

You may be incorrect in your assumption that the conflict is between Godzilla and humans.

That is precisely the point. They have to setup rules regarding the monster, then exploit those rules to win.

Then of course people ask, well how else are you gonna do it? Either you have God or error. By God I mean the War of the Worlds ending, where it was germs that God put on Earth that ultimately was the only defense; some stroke of luck or circumstances that enables Godzilla finished that has nothing to do with the protagonists' attempts. Error is the unintended consequences of a failed plan, that somehow works to the end. Think Dracula, he is wounded (despite the protagonists failing) but he asks his bride to end his life for making her an abomination.

The key difference between Dracula and Godzilla is that Godzilla has ZERO depth, it is an animal (who likes fish and Madison Square Garden). It cant reason itself to death like Dracula, it is singular.

Cranston's character: "If we find a way to shove a nuke up it's ass, and then detonate, then we can defeat it."

Cut to a scene of a already finished Godzilla sized enema with a nuke tip.

Cranston's character: "Wow.. you finished that project fast."

Some military dude: "We've been working on that since the 50s in case it came back."
The Debt

Randy Quaid: I think that falls inline with error. Their plan was to knock out the mother ship and then be able to destroy the cityships by fighter pilot, to "take em, ya know, do your stuff." And when everyone ran out of missiles because they are trying to destroy 5 miles^2 of metal with ~100 air-to-air missiles, they should have lost.

But despite their planning, Randy looked at a picture of his kids and decided to try and suicide the blast. What if it didnt work? What if the blast took that plane and grounded it in the blink of an eye and kept going. Its highly plausible, we just saw a dozen cities die were the blast doesnt expand when it hits the top of a building, it drills through the building to the surface and then expands.

But the God ending is "despite the protagonists' best efforts something completely out of their control saves them." Quaid was certainly part of the protagonist group.

This thread has taught me that aTmAg is a HUGE Breaking Bad fan boy. Do you write your own fan scripts or cosplay on the weekends?

You know Harrison Ford was in some bad movies and managed to bounce back. I see that he will be in Expendables 3...what a huge mistake!!! This will surely knock him down to a Toby McGuire level type actor or at most a Paul Walker.

It was a good show. I put it up there with the Wire, but nope on the fan boy stuff.

It's one thing to to a bad movie 40 years after you started your career and are already established as a good and versatile actor. It's another to follow up what probably will be remembered as your masterpiece with a disaster flick.

I'm very excited about this movie. Looks well done and not campy at all. Some great cinematography and I really like that they made Godzilla huge again.

I bet Pacific Rim influenced their decision to make him so huge. Had no idea the original one was so much smaller.

It appears that the 2014 Godzilla's body has grown, but it's head is the same size. Those atomic bombs have strange effects on things.

So let me get this right, once one becomes a revered actor for previous masterpieces. One must reserve themselves for indie/destined Oscar nomination films?

Got it. I hope he doesn't get a new part in the Star Wars movies, that'll ruin him for sure.

This. The BB fanboys need to take a step back. I had to look up Rock of Ages on IMDB because he was so good in that I didn't remember that he was even in it.

I will always see Cranston as Tim Whatley on Seinfeld.
