Watching the clips and trailers on Hulu right now. I am really pumped for this to come out. Most likely will see Saturday.

IMAX, yes. 3-D, no. Sadly, the two are hardly ever separated anymore. Seeing as it's freaking Godzilla, I'll swallow my hatred of 3-D and run to the nearest IMAX as quickly as possible.

I thought about creating a new thread for this, but just decided to drop this here since it's related to the topic:

Rifftrax has started a new Kickstarter campaign to bring to theaters a live riffing of the 1998 version of Godzilla. In two days, they've already surpassed their goal but I pledged to it to help out and also get some good digital goodies.

The live event is planned for August 14th.

In case you missed out, they raised funds to try and get the rights to the first Twilight. They failed in that, but were instead able to secure a screening of Starship Troopers...which was glorious. Somehow I doubt Sony is going to turn down their money for that piece of dreck.

Saw this last night and thought it was pretty damn good. This movie was a throwback to old monster movies with today's special effects. This was like if 40 something year old Spieldberg made Godzilla but had access to modern day technology. I loved the slow build up to the suspense. It took an hour before you see the monster, but when it finally happens, it made the impact so much greater. The pacing was very well done and the suspense building was very reminiscent of Jaws or Jurassic Park. This movie doesn't have the ADD moving from scene to scene in frantic pace of Pacific Rim or Transformers, so if you want wall to wall action, you may be disappointed. Also, other than Bryan Cranston, the human characters are very meh to flat out bad. The human aspect of the film keeps it from being great, but very enjoyable.

Great to hear, MarkoRamius.

Debating if I should skip a friend's birthday dinner tonight that would take me an hour and a half to get to with rush hour traffic, or see this in legit IMAX 20 minutes away. You may have just swayed me.

If anyone sees it in 3D tonight can you give impressions? All of my Imax theaters are only doing 3D showings

Disregard I found an Imax 2D

Pretty good. It was LOUD. I enjoyed that. Cranston killed it.

**spoils**

They were clever to ONLY show Cranston in previews. The fact he dies 30-45 minutes into it really pissed me off. Then we get that ****ty character that was supposed to be his son. I hope they didn't pay him for his acting.

Just looked his name up Aaron Taylor-Johnson...dude is terrible.

The 25 minute battle was worth the price of the ticket. Enjoyed it- but God- that Johnson guy

**end spoils**

Just go see it in IMAX

I saw it in 3D and really liked it. Other than a couple of shots that looked really cool in 3D when Godzilla stood up, I would stick with 2D. It reminded me of Jaws where the shark didn't show up until much later in the movie but even with no Godzilla for a while I was never bored. And the last 25 minutes were worth the buildup. The best thing is that all the monster movies I've seen in the last several years (Pacific Rim, etc) I would always say "wow this is cool kind of like Godzilla" but this actually WAS Godzilla. It was great.

Pretty darn good for the genre. Saw it on a normal size screen in 3D...nothing amazing about the 3D other than the monsters themselves. I imagine in large format it would have been more spectacular.

Spoilerish

While I see the merit in the build-up, my biggest complaint is that I didn't think there was enough Godzilla. You see more of the Mutos than you do of the big guy himself and by that point, the movie is over before you know it. Also, the human's realization that Godzilla is a good guy seemed tacked on.

Otherwise, the monster battle was awesome and Godzilla looked cooler than ever (when you get to see him). The reveal is cheer-worthy, as is his seal-the-deal move to end the fight.

Oh yeah, didn't see Cranston's death coming...based on the previews, I expected him to be the main human character. I like those kind of curve balls in a trailer (unlike the false plot lines advertised in Amazing Spiderman 2's ad campaigns...take note, movie studios).

Cr0wbar, I won't disagree that the actor playing the son didn't do an amazing job...but the character was straight cookie cutter. EVERY one of these type of movies have a main character JUST like his. The story following that character around in any disaster/monster movie is beyond predictable (and frankly boring) at this point.

End Spoilerish

If you like monster movies, go see it! You won't be disappointed. Solid A-

Spoilers, sort of

Good. Won't be an all-time cinematic classic, but fun to watch. Clever writing gave some neat twists that kept it from being too formulaic. They actually throw some red herrings that work really well.

Any movie that can at any point make the audience hoot and holler and applaud is worth the 11 bucks to see it in the theater.

The money shot at the end of the fight got lots of cheering in my audience.

The MUTO design was fantastic and loved godzilla and his atomic breath.

I honestly had no problems with Johnson.

I actually liked how Edwards didn't blow his load on shot after shot of godzilla. This leaves a lot of room for sequels. I liked the Mothra reference.

I liked being teased throughout so that wasn't an issue for me. Loved how one of the fight was being watched by his son on TV instead of just showing it there.

I wish Ken wantanabe's character would have gone more in depth with his reasoning for not wanting to use a bomb. I felt he was just, " let them fight! Look at this old watch. Let them fight!"

Really, really enjoyed it. Felt very Spielberg Jr. to me, in the best way. Loved the slow build, and the last half hour was flat-out awesome.

That said, it could have been FAR better with a more charismatic/interesting lead. Aaron Taylor-Johnson wasn't bad - he was serviceable - and they didn't need to go as extreme as Will Smith in Independence Day, but man, ATJ as Ford was just so damn bland. I did not care about him one bit. Had they gone with someone capable of being a little funnier, a little more invested, and just slightly more capable of eliciting actual emotion, I think I would have connected with the story a lot more. Instead, it felt like a lot of air was let out as soon as
Cranston died
.

Still, I'm definitely keeping a close eye on Gareth Edward's career from here on out. He knocked this one of the park for the most part, and I feel like he's only going to get better / more refined.

Saw it today in 2D and really enjoyed it. Agree that the main character did an average job and they could have added a bit more detail to the back story, but the monsters were awesome and visuals great.

Some light spoilers in post, if you really care for a monster film.

I loved the electromagnetic attack of the MUTO. I also was not expecting a second female MUTO. That made the fights more intense for sure.

I also loved the part where you have several military ships sailing alongside godzilla. Definitely gave it the vibe that he is a protector throughout and not just a mindless beast.

I can't rave enough about the creature designs and the atomic breath was awesome. The fights had a lot of weight to them. It didn't feel light like Pacific rim.

I think Edwards has done well enough that he will have several more studio projects lined up. Toho and Legendary are apparently both very pleased with the film so we shall see.

Btw, can anyone explain the sequence of historical events as they pertain to the plot? Between the quick exposition drop, and Watanabe's accent, I didn't quite catch everything...

- I get that both Godzilla and the MUTOs were ancient creatures - or maybe descendants of ancient creatures - that fed off of radiation, when the Earth was much more radioactive. So was Godzilla essentially hibernating for millions of years? And then was awoken in 1954 by a deep sea expedition? I'll buy that, I guess, though I'd rather he have been created by a nuclear mishap, rather than awoken by proximity to nuclear material. The hibernating-for-millions-of-years thing just feels a little cheap (if I'm understanding it correctly).

- Either way, where was Godzilla from 1954 to 2014? After they tried killing him, what happened? Where did he go?

- Who's skeleton did Watanabe and Hawkins find in 1999? Was that just another Godzilla? A mama Godzilla that birthed the one in the movie? And why was that skeleton next to the MUTO cocoon? Or was that MUTO skeleton? How did that male MUTO cocoon come to be?

- Finally, where did the female MUTO originate? They obviously transported it to Nevada, and I remember Watanabe saying where they found it, I just can't remember the location he named.

Again, I loved the movie for the most part, and I'm not trying to poke holes, just legitimately trying to better-grasp the whole origin/backstory angle.

It is true that there were unanswered questions. Hopefully some of these things will be better explained in sequels.

As for the female MUTO, it was the 2nd pod in the dig site.
