Did the FBI have Andrei set up the meet with Phillip, or were they just watching Andrei and all the priests and he happened to meet up w Phillip? It looked to me that Andrei thought he was tipping off PHilip to the other priests talking to FBI, and didn't realize he was being followed. I could have missed something though.

No he was just clueless.... he thought he was helping with the info about the Feds talking to people. But they were watching him is all.... it was not a setup working with them.

I wonder if they would have even taken Philip in or just tailed him. thy didn't know anything it was just someone Andre talked to.... until he ran of course.
They would have followed him as long as they could to get all of his contacts, patterns, etc. As soon as he started running, they knew he was onto them and would disappear if they didn't nab him.

well yeah... i knew why they were following him. I'm just saying I doubt they would have grabbed him or taken him in if he was unaware. But Philip knew he had to run as soon as he "made them" watching him so as not to give away anything else like contacts, locations, etc. And at that point they would have grabbed him of course if they caught him.

I'll have to watch again, but I don't think Phillip knew for sure he was toasted. He was glancing at people, but I don't think any of them we're the two guys who chased him. I think he figured the chance to be 90% and took off running just in case. If he was being followed then they would chase after him. If not then he would know he's still has his cover.

And if he didn't run, the FBI would follow him for hours or days. They wouldn't have nabbed him unless they were worried that he would escape.

He wasn't sure, I thought there was nothing in the shots from his perspective as he walked away, nothing that really stood out. He started running to make sure either way. Couldn't afford to have someone track his steps back.

The slow play of Elizabeth staking out the town with flashbacks to her youth were outstanding. It felt like "a day in the life" and suited the episode name perfectly.

Gonna miss this show so much. Hope the showrunners come back in a few years with a new spinoff show about American spies in the Soviet Union and call it The Soviets.

That wouldn't work. All nostalgia that this show provides will be gone (except for Russians watching the show).

That's not the way I interpreted that flashback. In the present she refused the assignment to kill the Russian diplomat, so she knew he was still a target for the Center. She then started following him to protect him from the Center. Her flashback to the mission where she left a dying man in the street taught her to not abandon a comrade. She wasn't going to abandon the comrade in the US just trying to do his best to make peace.

I also thought the shots of Phillip trying to make his tails after meeting with the priest were a good snapshot of the constant paranoia (deserved paranoia) they must live in to avoid surveillance.

I've always felt curious about how Russians feel watching this show. Russian has been spoken on the show a decent percentage. And from what I know has been a fair representation of Russian culture and attitudes.

It also showed that she was willing to abandon the comrade (dying pretty close to a street) that was trying to avoid peace.

I think the point of the flashback and the scene taking out Oleg's old flame was that she was exercising her own moral judgment in a mission. She started out with the instruction to "do what's right," and for her, over the course of many years, "doing what's right" in her mind merged with "following orders from the Centre," and now at the end she is back to trying to do the right thing within the context of her role and loyalty to Russia.

The fight with Paige just underscored that for her, the laundry list of questionable moral decisions in the name of following orders (without even getting into all of the murders).

Music nominations for the finale..... specifically from 86/87 timeframe. Music has always been a big player especially in season opening and ending episodes it seems with montages, etc.

I've come up with a few I think could be potential series finale entries.

You have to consider some Peter Gabriel and/or Fleetwood Mac could make an appearance as they've been used before.

Peter Gabriel had a great album So in 1986 with some eerie mood music types that could be used:

"Red Rain" - Red pertaining to Russia perhaps

"Don't Give Up" - duet with Kate Bush great song and could relate t their effort to get out and not give up

"In your Eyes" - great song but perhaps too well know from Say Anything with Lloyd and the boombox

Really that album has like three more entries that have great mood music too
We Do what We're Told
Mercy Street
This is the Picture

For Fleetwood Mac there was "Little Lies" around this time which could be apropos about all the secrets.
Would have to be something more active though in the action to match the upbeat tempo.

Other artists and songs I would consider from 86/87

"I Just died in Your Arms Tonight" - Cutting Crew perhaps too literal and too upbeat but has a great sound

"Land of Confusion" - Genesis again maybe a little upbeat but so apropos of the 80s and it was a warning about big government and Reagan era politics so maybe

And this one I got from Reddit which is what made me start thinking about it.
"To Have and To Hold" - Depeche Mode
Actual references to Russia in the opening and has a dark somber mood and tone. perfect for TV more mood music than singing especially at the end.

the more I consider it the more this one makes sense though. Perfect somber tone and about how citizens tend to follow orders of a dictator/leader during wartime.

we do what we're told
we do what we're told
we do what we're told
told to do
we do what we're told
we do what we're told
we do what we're told
told to do
one doubt
one voice
one war
one truth
one dream

They opened the season with that one, and it doesn't fit nearly as well anymore with Elizabeth's break from unquestioning obedience.

Finally caught up on the last episode and wow this is exciting. Cant wait for the finale. I'm hard pressed to think of another series which has built an entire series up into a finale like this. So many directions that this could go.

And as a side note... I really want a spin off 'Stan and Oleg' buddy series...

I think Stan lives as he will somehow end up taking care of Henry, and Oleg lives the rest of his life in America away from his family.

And if we are lucky, maybe we find out Nina was a host and will be all fixed up and come back for the last episode... or I could be getting my shows mixed up a bit.

Henry will get deported and US citizenship denied due to his parents being enemy agents at the time of his birth.

That's if he doesn't get killed. 3:1 odds that only innocents get hurt and Philip kills himself because of it.

And Nina strayed too far from her loop. Maybe she'll be in a flashack.

Maybe I missed it, but whatever happened to Philip's grown son? Didn't he make it to America at some point?

Is that sarcasm? This one episode had more stuff happening than an entire season of The Americans usually does!

I know this article has been posted on this thread before, or maybe on previous seasons. But these discoveries did happen, and the kids were left alone in real life.

Wow almost here.. I'm getting anxious actually and depressed at the same time. like giddily nervous but with a knot in my stomach.

Weird reaction to a TV show - the only endings I've felt this way for were Sopranos, Breaking Bad and LOST to a lesser degree.

Well a tribute to some of my favorite characters....

But he wasn't. He didn't creep on Paige, or anyone else. He had a wife and a church. I might not agree with his silence on the illegals, but (if I understand correctly), he was within his rights not to say anything.

Did you read the article? They had their Canadian citizenship revoked, reapplied for citizenship/visa and were denied to Canada, the UK, and France. While the US doesn't have a similar law per se, you could imagine some technicality being invoked due to the nature of the crimes of their parents in the US under false pretenses.

I can't buy Paige as a good character, really. The potential was there when you consider her arc, but I don't think it was ever realized. This last scene where she called her mother out was about the only significant enjoyment/entertainment I ever got out of her character as a focal point.

Kid actors are tough to write for, though, so maybe I should grade her character on a curve.

I thought Pastor Tim's character was good. Every other show in the history of TV would have made the Christian preacher hit on Elizabeth or Paige. It's just too tempting a storyline for Hollywood to resist. The show gets points for not going there. He had genuine fear when Philip went by the church that night. Any other show would have whacked him.
