Yeah, be more like The Americans, Breaking Bad, and Justified. Less like Walking Dead and Dexter.

Yeah, gonna be great,

FX did this show a real favor it a set timeline, they have been able to pace it how they wanted to to get to where it ends. The plot lines they set up should be awesome.

Funny though, the show has done musical montages before, but that first one really gave me a Better Call Saul feel.

I wasn't paying attention to the song during the Mexico City scene. Pretty awesome song choice.

The music has always been well done but last night was superb.

Especially the opening Crowded House song and then Gabriel's "We Do What We're Told" which was played even louder than normal since the scene had all subtitles with Elizabeth meeting the Russian in Mexico was overt in context.

Interesting how that review above compares them to full 80s music videos - played over dramatic stories with relevant context.

I love hearing Kerri Russel speak Russian. The opening sequence was a little confusing. I knew from this thread the show was starting 3 years later, but it wasn't that easy to figure out. Obviously when they started discussing Paige in college it was clear, but you know what I mean.

I love how supportive Elizabeth was in the car when talking to Paige.

Elizabeth might have surpassed Snoop as the most savage female killer on TV. I love how complex yet generally unconflicted her character is, and has been from the start, and they made her the more driven and mercenary character in the marriage.

Oleg has turned into such a compelling character. I wonder if his contact with Philip will be the thing that exposes them to Stan after all this time.

The scenes of Philip's retirement juxtaposed with Elizabeth's life were fantastically shot. The music was incredible too.

Do you think Elizabeth wouldn't let Phillip talk in that last scene because she knew that necklace she was wearing was bugged?

Yep. Commie General of the Strategic Rocket Forces gave it to her in Mexico. Told her she knows about the Dead Hand now and cannot be taken alive.

um yeah did you miss the part where she opened it and the pill was there. kinda obvious after what the Russian said to her about not being taken alive.

it wasn't birth control.

Chekhov's Cyanide Pill. So who ends up taking it, intentionally, unintentionally, or not self inflicted?

I was distracted with my mutts and the storm last night. I heard/saw all of that but I couldn't tell it was a pill. It was small/white; I thought it was a bug, not a pill, but it makes total sense.

and their Dead Hand is a Doomsday Device.

so many great cinematic examples - a wonderful concept for them to explore

Dr. Strangelove - Russians claim they have it, DR. S points out that it is only effective if everyone know about it
Wargames - WOPR or Joshua that runs amok nearly starting nuclear war
Star Trek - Doomsday machine episode they killed the planet killer using an H-bomb from 20th century
Terminator - Skynet the ultimate defense weapon instead takes over and tries to destroy mankind

Makes me wonder if it is even real - or are they using it as bait to fight Gorbachev, expose others, etc..

Or if they are really as close as he says they are. He said they only needed a few/couple pieces of technology to make it work...but that could be something as major as the guidance system...

I'm kinda bummed they jumped to 1987 and Chernobyl went unmentioned. I was hoping to see more crisis of consciousness as the USSR disintegrated in real life. Solid episode otherwise.

$20 says Paige has a crisis of conscience after her first kill and steals the cyanide pill from Elizabeth and takes it. Final episode. Fade to black.

ugh. that would be a dark ending...but that's what i've always felt....it'll be dark.

If you are right I hate you.....but respect you.

Damn... the more I think about it.... seems like too convenient for it to be there. I never think elizabeth would be in that situation you know - she is too bright or too crafty or will kill anyone to escape. Which is why at the time it did occur to me that ..."well that won't be her taking it but I bet somebody does one way or another".

they focused on it a bit too much to be nothing.

ugh.

I think the mail robot is getting close to retirement age now.

While the action from Elizabeth is good, Phillip and his interaction with Elizabeth and everyone else is the story, and we didn't get much of that. Especially considering that Oleg obviously has a big, important job for him to perform.

Stan stopping for the mail robot was a nice comedic touch.

Seems as if they are setting the story up for the terminally ill woman to get the cyanide pill.

Hard for Phil to get close when Elizabeth is full on tired b!+ch mode.

Stan wants out, but they just won't let him.

Thought from previews that the "defector" mentioned was going to give up the illegals... Looks less likely now. Good tease.

I wonder how they're going to get busted. Or do they go inactive to be caught years later? Seems like a hard timeline to do in 7 episodes.

Solid Episode! And Philip is so crafty..... It wasn't until the closing scene when I realized he is playing Elizabeth this whole time. She spilled the beans to him about The General and what she's trying to get from him. So I guess he's back to the spy game in earnest. Will he tell Oleg?

I think maybe it has to do with Stan's new wife. She fancies herself an FBI agent. Maybe by chance she figures out that something isn't right about the Jennings and starts snooping around in an effort to prove herself. They catch her and have to kill her, which causes Stan to find out about them.

I always thought she worked for the Soviets in some other aspect that even The Jennings aren't aware. Maybe she was turned or something like that and she's working on Stan.

Stan has changed focus within the FBI so this may be a last ditch effort to get some use out of him in her eyes.

I always assumed that the Jennings' travel business was subsidized or supported in some way by Russia/KGB, so that money wouldn't be an issue for them. Did Phillip cut it off when he wanted to totally get out of the spy game? It's an interesting sub-plot and I wonder if it'll play into things somehow.

I've enjoyed Paige's arc up to this point, but her naivety regarding the failed mission "suicide" is hard to believe.

Personally, I didn't think he was playing her necessarily. He decided at the end that he needs to work with Oleg, but I felt he was close to telling her about it two episodes ago and even in this one.

But he sees she's too far gone into it, so now he's going to do what he feels is right, for his country and also to save Paige from the life that Elizabeth is getting her into. But he will try to protect and "save" Elizabeth too.

How does Phillip still has access to various late 70s model Grandma cars if he's out of the spy game?
