Meh. Still cheaper than Marvel Unlimited, and DC will supposedly match the 3 month gap by the end of the year.

This will also mean increased budgets for the shows.

I saw that HBO Max recently added Babylon 5 (remastered/upscaled). I've never seen the show - how does it hold up? Worth watching for a scifi fan?

Babylon 5 is a good show. Season one is a slow start but it gets much better. Worth a watch if you have never seen it.

I've long wondered why they ditched the HBO brand and kept the Cinemax, which was the inferior product, as the title in the app.

Based on the information provided, it seems as though they are cutting down on new original content to focus on quality over volume.

I never saw the max part as a way to connect Cinemax to the naming. However, the reasoning I've always seen for ditching the HBO name in the app is they wanted to keep the HBO brand as "prestige" while they were adding Discovery/TLC content to the streaming app so they didnt want 90 day fiance and 1000 pound sisters watering down the HBO brand. Of course we all knew that an app/service just named Max was dumb as hell.

Somehow Apple TV has completely blown by HBO in my eyes for having more content, and quality content at that.

Max hasn't had a reason to consistently subscribe in a long while.

Just a nostalgia play by their marketing executives now that HBO doesn't have a true prestige IP since Succession went off the air. All of the other services are catching up and/or have caught up.

They have TLOU which is...contentious. White Lotus which doesn't have full command and attention of the viewing audience at large. What else? Gemstones is awesome but just wrapped and it didn't have wide reach to begin with.

2.9 million viewers across HBO and Max = Succession Series Finale Viewership.
6.2 million viewers across HBO and Max = The White Lotus Season 3 Finale Viewership.

08.4 million viewers per episode across HBO and Max = Succession Season 4
12.2 million viewers per episode across HBO and Max = The White Lotus Season 3

The White Lotus is one of HBO's most popular, most-watched shows ever. It's a massive "prestige" hit.

Never mind that...

- Euphoria - Season 3 (2026)
- Hacks - Season 4 (2025)
- Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon - Season 3 (2026)
- Game of Thrones: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - Season 1 (2026)
- Harry Potter - Season 1 (2026)
- Industry - Season 4 (2026)
- It: Welcome to Derry - Season 1 (2026)
- The Last of Us - Season 2 (2025)
- DC Studios' Lanterns - Season 1 (2026)
- DC Studios' Peacemaker - Season 2 (2025)
- The Pitt - Seasons 1 & 2 (2025 & 2026)

... are all currently part of the HBO/Max slate, and are all either massive IP, massive hits as well, or multiple Emmy Award winners.

In fact, you could make the case that HBO, in combination with Max, has never been in a better position, especially with all the other things they have coming down the pike (including a number of new comedies).

I feel like $2 of my monthly sub pays for prestigious consulting firms like McKinsey to tell them to change their name every 2 years.

They're running The Pitt on TNT soon. Which, I guess could work? These sanitized versions they tried of The Sopranos and Sex and the City never really did.

That's actually a really great point. Meme'ng themselves on social media for the silliness of it all is pretty clever marketing.

GoT a ton of the fan base soured out on the original ending.

HP JK Rowling is really trying her best to be as controversial as possible with the liberal portion of her fan base. Not to mention that I'm not sure people really wanted a reboot? The movies leave a lot to be desired but still feels really soon for a complete reboot.

Last of Us is taking a thrashing online since the major death.

I don't think what you posted is that strong of a slate of shows to be honest. White lotus, while popular, is very much an acquired taste.

Potential quality issues aside, their 2025/2026 slate will likely garner more eyeballs over the next two years than any two-year run in the company's history. These shows will do insane numbers, even and especially Harry Potter, despite Rowling's best efforts to drive the fanbase away.

I also am heavily biased and wish HBO would take a leap at basically any other fantasy IP versus beating GoT and HP into the ground. I say this as a massive potter nerd.

A great comment on the entertainment future until you throw in bait in the last clause.

It's not bait. It is kind of true. I know personally know hardcore potter heads who basically have burned the books out of their lives. These people held obscure trivia contests that could only have come from her website pottermore back in the day

If that was truly their overly melodramatic response then that says more about those Potter fans than it does about her, if they can't separate her personal feelings and comments from the Potter books/movies. Absolutely nothing she's said affects those stories.

Oh, good lord, stop with the pearl clutching. That's not how I meant it.

First of all, it's an objectively true statement, and a simple fact, that a portion of left-leaning fans are being driven away by Rowling's continued efforts to publicly express her opinion on trans people. That said, I'm not criticizing her *for* her opinion on trans people. It's one thing to have and share that opinion, which is totally her right/prerogative.

But it's another thing entirely to, say, explicitly imply, even if in a joking manner, that she can't stand the three main original actors for having their opinions. This is the kind of thing I'm talking about, that really turns fans off...
