Crazy. But also... choice?

I have a feeling people in 20 (10?) years from now will look at the period between 2010-2020 where this was NOT the way as even more insane.

The Suicide Squad should be the names given to whoever thought this was a good idea.....

Yeah, the idea that a movie first released to theaters, then there was a gap of months where we couldn't see it again, until it DVD/Blu-ray/streaming, is going to seem so ancient and bonkers. That said, I never in a million years would have predicted a day-and-date theatrical/streaming strategy for *all* the blockbusters like this, for only the cost of a monthly streaming subscription, at no extra premium charge. I just cant wrap my head around this.

Surely hbo is paying outrageous sums of money for this, right?

Two things.

First, if I'm not realistically going to be able to see Dune in a theater, can I please see it like... now?

Second... Tom and Jerry?
Tom & Jerry - the undercard to Godzilla vs. Kong.

Is it safe to assume Judas and the Black Messiah will be released the same way?

I'm sure the execs simply played it out and saw the inevitability of it, and, taking into account lessons learned from the Kodaks, Blockbusters, etc, figured they couldn't afford to NOT do this. But, yeah, it doesn't take away from the shock - especially of this happening now, so soon.

HBO and Warner Bros are owned by the same company - WarnerMedia. It's all under the same umbrella.

I imagine it's also part of a race to gobble up more studios, which factors into this. I doubt any studio not under Warner, Disney, or soon Netflix (maybe Apple?) has much longer as an "independent".

Answered my own question. It's ALL Warner Bros films in 2021

Love this. I'm actually wishing studios would put their movies on demand or iTunes, Amazon, etc. and charge a premium for it for people to watch at home, but this will definitely do!

I wouldn't have paid to watch Space Jam or Tom and Jerry in theaters but I'll watch it on HBO Max for sure.

Goodness. And there is no turning back from that. That should just about kill off many theaters that were already barely hanging on.

And it also means I may pull the trigger on upgrading the sound in my home theater.

Nice. I recently upgraded to an 85" 4K TV for this very reason, but yeah, it might be time to upgrade my sound as well. Right now I just have a sound bar. It gets the job done for sure, but true surround sound is getting more and more tempting.

85"! Got damn!

I actually already have good speakers but we are trying to figure out which room we want to be the main media room. We currently have two media rooms.*

* Posted solely to try and one up your larger tv.

I'm very happy with the HDR/4K announcement. I believe I can really tell a difference on my 60" OLED.

I have no problems with watching new movies at home for a fee I've been paying to Suddenlink for years anyway (HBO). Bring it on!

I didn't even know another Matrix movie was coming. I just bought all 3 and watched them for the first time in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos and they are so awesome for that format.

I personally love it but I'm also a hermit who likes watching movies on his OLED. Also for sound you could invest in a nice pair of headphones.

If Disney does this it will literally destroy any hopes theaters have, but that would be a lot of money out of Disney's pocket I'm thinking unless they charge for each release a significant amount.

If you have an Apple TV, I suggest watching with AirPods Pro if you're watching alone (you can also share the audio even with the AirPods). I was watching The Mandalorian with them while it was playing on my 4K tv and it felt like I was actually in the middle of the scene in real life. Not at all like regular listening through headphones.

Oh, nice, yeah, I've done that with the Apple TV in my bedroom a couple times, but never with a sound-effects-heavy movie or show in the living room, and I only have the standard, first gen AirPods. I was waiting to upgrade to the new ones that are supposed to be released next year, and I'll try it then.

Each movie in the trilogy got progressively worse, so I'd be okay watching this one at home.....but I'll be damned if I miss John Wick 4 on the big screen.

Was it explicitly stated or understood that the movies would be included in the subscription price of Max?

Either way, it's really just a way to grow the base and wet the appetite of the consumer. Then you slowly start jacking up prices or then add the option to stream right away for $10. Look how much Netflix has gone up and branched out into tiered service.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yes, they're included with the subscription price, but will only be available for a month each. Then to either theaters again or VOD, then finally back to HBO Max at some point months later.

That is a pretty smart move. I could see watching dune at home and then catching it a theater post vaccine.

The data they will have from streaming will be interesting. Combining it with digital distribution and i can see a revival of the "midnight movies" or micro-releases.

Legendary trying to keep Dune and Godzilla vs Kong from debuting on HBO Max

Good. I'm sorry, but if you put in 75% of a film's budget, the people who kicked in 25% shouldn't be dictating how/where it gets released.

I really don't know why they didn't charge a small amount for the new VOD.

My wife and I were discussing what we'd pay for some of the tier 1 new releases...we'd not only sign up for HBO Max (for other content), but we'd easily pay an additional $6-$10 per new film. I think most of the 5m subscribers would do the same.

Out of curiosity, how far away are you sitting from your tv that you felt an 85" was worth it?
