Only looked through it a little this morning but it may have leap frogged everybody else as one of the best streaming services we pay for. Somehow I missed that Looney Tunes would be on there. The downloadable content was a big addition to catch them up to everybody else, and I really like the UI.

Have HBO Now. Will cancel sub and explain its because Max isn't available on roku.

Hope they come to their senses soon because not being available on roku is a stupid move.

Pretty underwhelmed with the content at the moment. I already had HBO now. I signed on to HBO max right now and despite all their new content, there is not a single thing they have added that I want to watch. I guess maybe it will get better when Warner Bros starts adding more content to it.

This isnt the app that causes this sentiment, its been building over the past 2-3 years.

The golden era of "cable cutting" is pretty much over, imo. It was inevitable, we had it good for a while.
You will need to potentially subscribe to 5-6(maybe more) different services to have access to the same shows/movies/sports as you had in netflix about 5 years ago. At least it will be on demand entertainment, instead of being subject to the whims of programming.

oh absolutely. cord-cutting was a mirage anyway. Here's my current sub list:

YTTV: $50/month
Netflix(shared): $5/month
Hulu: $13/month
HBO Now: $16/month
ESPN+: $5/month
Prime: don't consider this because i more than pay for that yearly sub with free shipping.

did I 'cord cut'? ...no not really. But $89/month and the freedom to watch on multiple TV's around the house via 1-time roku purchases or any tab/phone/computer beats the hell out of $200/month for DirecTV and 3 boxes.

Edit, and I guess it'll go down $16/month until HBO Max is available on roku.

One of the nice benefits I've noticed that I haven't seen anyone mention is that you can download shows/movies. I don't think this was possible with the previous HBO apps. Huge for travelling.

This was added a couple of months ago. They did add the ability to create multiple different profiles for people in your house, which is nice.

How is this not available on Roku or Amazon?

What a monumentally stupid move.

Yea, I was going to ask if TCTTS or anyone had insider knowledge of how close they were to an agreement to have this added to the Amazon and Roku app stores.

Trying to get the app on my xbox now and having some issues, but excited to boot it up. Looney Tunes for the kiddo should be a lot of fun.

For all the glitches DIsney+ launched with, at least they had their deals in place. This is just bizarre and not a good move.

So this is still free if you were getting HBO free through AT&T/DirecTV for having an unlimited data plan, correct? I noticed when I signed in it said I would be billed through AT&T.

It was never a mirage, it's just that somewhere along the way the meaning behind the term changed from getting rid of something and replacing it with something else (at the beginning Netflix was pretty much the only option) turned into trying to find a one for one replacement for cable. The latter was always going to have minimal cost savings but there is still way more flexibility in the current set up thanks to no contracts.

Looks like you can actually get this for free through AT&T, even without an existing HBO subscription. I have high speed internet only through AT&T (no phone, no TV), and I qualified for HBO Max just with that. Makes it an easy "subscribe" for me...

How did you find that out? I have att internet so would love to find out if I am eligible.

I just logged in to my AT&T Uverse account, and it was on my home page. It said I qualified and click "here" to set it up.

Just trying to make sure I understand this. If I were to cancel my HBO NOW through Roku, and then sign up for it through the itunes store, I would have access to HBO Max for the same price as I'm getting HBO Now, but it wouldn't work on my Roku currently so I could only watch it on my AppleTV?

Glad I have an Apple TV, they seem to act like they have no idea when a deal will be reached. Surely HBO will have to blink first right? I know nothing about how the apps and their terms with different platforms work.

I've never seen any of the Studio Ghibli stuff so I'm glad there is a place I can finally watch Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle.

Yes, until roku and hbo come to agreement. You can also open the APP directly on your TV assuming the TV was purchased in the last few years, and on mobile devices.

Yes. I had HBO Now through iTunes and was automatically upgraded to Max. Works on my iPhone and Apple TV.

It was also supposed to save money, that was part of the appeal to doing it originally.

CNBC article

If you don't already pay for HBO through AT&T, HBO Max will also be free for people who pay for any of these AT&T services:

AT&T's Unlimited Elite wireless plan.
AT&T's Internet 1000 plan.
AT&T TV Premier (launching after HBO Max.)
DirecTV Premier.
U-verse U400, U450 and U450 Latino.

Note - Customers on other plans will be eligible for up to a free year of service.

For those who jumped on the 1Gbps Fiber plan for $49.99/month, this is a good free add-on

https://www.hbomax.com/faq/#howtoget

For some reason, this link https://www.att.com/hbo-max/ does not show Home Internet 1000. But, on the main https://www.att.com, the banner has a small link "See details" which shows the Internet 1000 being eligible. It appears the HBO Max page missed mentioning it.

When cord cutting started, there was no one-for-one replacement for cable. It saved cost by cutting something out (cable television). The current options allow you to have what you had before and more. Anybody expecting that a system involving one-for-one replacement (YTTV, Hulu TV, etc) AND new content (Netflix, Hulu, Prime, HBO Max, etc) to be significantly cheaper if at all is delusional. The best benefit of the current cord cutting environment is the depth of options and lack of required contracts. It can still be cheaper if you're not a person that needs to subscribe to everything all the time, most people just don't want to deal with doing that.

I genuinely don't understand how a platform of this stature can launch in 2020 and not at least offer *some* 4K content, especially when Game of Thrones, Westworld, and many WB moves already exist on 4K Blu-ray. For the record, 4K is coming to HBO Max, but why it's not available at launch is beyond me...

Because the amount of people that care about 4k is so small that it doesn't matter if it is available at launch. Having more content and good UI is more important than having 4k.

And yet Disney+ launched in 4K. Not to mention Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu all offer 4K as well. No reason HBO Max couldn't do the same thing.
Bunk Moreland

it's just another sub-optimal part of an already clunky release. Not impressive at all and was disappointed in canceling my Now subscription today. I'll add it back when Max shows up on Roku.

Yes, there is obviously a reason. They prioritized what they could get done by launch date and 4K wasn't on that list. We will see how the subscription numbers go, but I would bet it is a small minority feels that 4k is a deal breaker.
