Man in my opinion, this movie is a big dud. They took this movie to another level compared to the 1st, a new level of stupid

I found myself going crazy having to lookup what BW meant. I didn't realize Black Widow was popular enough to be abbreviated in regular conversation. Next thing you know yall will be saying some guy named Milton was your favorite character in The Suicide Squad
I forgot this was a DC thread, not Marvel.

I don't care if its DC or Marvel. I don't follow either comic universes closely. I just know I liked what Gunn did with Guardians of the Galaxy so I knew I wanted to see The Suicide Squad. I wasn't disappointed.

Box office came in significantly under Black Widow. You'd have to think that's in part because it was free on HBO Max (rather than effectively being VOD on Disney).

I'm a little sad for Gunn and the gang, because I enjoyed the flick.

From the latter link:

Quote:

Five summers ago, the DC supervillain extravaganza Suicide Squad had a massive $133.7 opening weekend at the North American box office. Despite those eye-popping numbers, critics and audiences were left unimpressed by the film. This weekend, the complete opposite happened: critics and audiences loved its big-budget follow-up, The Suicide Squad, but its theatrical receipts were underwhelming, pulling in just $26.5 million in its debut weekend. In the age of COVID, it appears that up is down, black is white, and blockbusters just ain't what they used to be.
. . .
While the first Suicide Squad's ultimate global box-office haul of $746.8 million seems way out of reach for the new film, Warner Bros. would probably be tickled pink if The Suicide Squad finished somewhere close to Robbie and Harley Quinn's 2020 spin-off Birds of Prey, which pulled in $201.9 worldwide just as the world began closing down.
. . .
In fourth was Disney and Marvel's Black Widow, which tacked on $4 million in its fifth weekend in theaters. The PG-13-rated superhero stand-alone starring Scarlett Johansson dipped -38.1% from the previous session, scoring a $1,292 per-screen average in 3,100 theaters. The movie's domestic box-office take now stands at $174.4 million, which pushed it past the latest Fast and the Furious installment, F9: The Fast Saga, to snag the crown as the top-grossing film of the year in North America.

It's tough to see how this iteration of TSS gets to BW's $174 million domestically with a bow of $26.5 million and it being available for free on HBO Max.

Yeah, it seems really dumb to compare those numbers. TSS is free on HBO Max while BW is getting $30 on D+ (which is ridiculous, and why I haven't seen it yet).

Not a fair comparison.

Not to mention Black Widow is an og Avenger and has been around for 11 years now.

They shouldn't be expected to do the same numbers.

Warner made a decision back near the end of 2020 that the 2021 box office numbers would be trash no matter if life was "normal" or not and went all in on using new releases to boost HBOMax subscriptions. Financially, I don't know if that choice has been a win for Warner or just them hedging their bets on 2021 and hope bragging about subscription numbers will keep the stock holders happy enough until next year. For me, I have seen many more new movies upon initial release this way than I have seen in a traditional theater in the past 6 years. All $15 of my dollars goes to Warner in this instance than if I paid $15 to a movie theater that get to take their cut.

I hope the viewing numbers are high enough for Warner to keep these kind of projects going as I enjoyed it. I will say their advertising for the movie seemed almost non-existent to me. I heard more about this movie through this thread than anywhere else. Being a cord cutter, I have found that I just don't see movie ads near as often anymore so studios are going to need to find a new way to advertise rather than just show tons of traditional tv comercials.

All good points, but I'm gonna push back a bit on the marketing, because I feel like I've seen this advertised like crazy on TV, online, etc. There's been *so much* Suicide Squad content out there, to the point where I feel like it surpassed even Black Widow and F9 in that regard.

And I recognize that it may be completely due to me watching almost zero live TV in the past 2 months. Between working from home, having ad blocker extensions, and having kids hog my tvs watching almost exclusively YouTube and Netflix, the only advertisements I see these days are the cookie based ones where if I search for something on Google, an ad for something like it will appear on my social media non-stop for 2 weeks.

I don't see how you can not compare them while noting the differences in distribution (as I did). I promise Villeneuve gave them a passing glance.

I'll be curious if some of the talent was to be paid in points based on box office similar to prior post covid movies that have resulted in litigation.

Then again Gunn was being rehabilitated (not that I think he needed to be after his Mea culpas) by the studio, so maybe he's not going to bite the hand that fed him even if Warner did undercut the BO for its own benefit. Robbie might have.also been in a position to demand back end compensation when she signed on to the flick (and Warner might have wanted to do so in case it bombed).

Scarlet was done with her character so she was free to seek recompense from Disney without worry that she was damaging future income from the Mouse.

So that was a lot of fun, not the masterpiece I was expecting from the reviews but super entertaining. It did feel like it was a hair too long, but some really fun action and as usual some great comedic timing from Gunn and the cast.

Minor spoilers...

LOVE that he killed off 3/4 of the cast in the first 5 minutes...brilliant. Harley getting the javelin into the cab (and just carrying it around in general) then seeing them sneaking across the street to save her was hilarious. Polka Dot man was great. And I too was wondering why Milton was following them into the compound then...poor Milton.

I think the biggest personal success for me in this movie was Polka Dot Man. When this was first announced, I was incredulous he was included and couldn't get over how stupid of a character he is.

He's still stupid but his story arc in this was awesome and I think Gunn is probably one of the few who could have made that happen.

It's nearly worth watching just to see Polka dancing in the club scene.

I liked the first half but got hokey. The starfish came across as a 1960s Godzilla villain.

Just an awful villain choice.

I saw a video where Gunn says he initially wanted it to be Suicide Squad vs bad Superman but the studio said no and he had to adjust the script.

Fairly certain this is the plot of the upcoming Rocksteady Suicide Squad game

Suicide squad vs bad Superman would be a fun movie. Maybe they'll let him do it sometime.

Would be fun but that's about a 2 second fight with this clown group. Maybe 1 second.

Gunn needs to read Injustice.

Reaffirms my belief that Superman is a much more interesting villain than hero.

Edit to plug Red Son - it's the best Superman graphic novel out there.

Its why I thought the fight scene in Justice League after superman was resurrected was so intriguing. Seeing a "bad guy" superman just demolish the rest of the team actually had me worried for the outcome of the fight despite there being well over 2 hours left in the Snyder cut of the movie.

Red Son is the only graphic novel I've read more than once, and the DC animation of it is pretty strong too.

What a kick ass movie it would be, although I'm sure they'd **** it up somehow.
