Summary:
John is Erin's father - his motivation is protecting this secret from Lori and Kenny.
Kevin is DJs father -he and Erin had a secret relationship the pendant is from him.
Billy is a protector he lost his wife and kids and protecting family is his motivation.
Ryan is a sneaky stalker with a crush or two and misinterpreted things with John and Erin.
Ryan killed Erin accidentally in a struggle.
All of the cover up is to protect old secrets about John and Kevin in particular.
Dylan is just a drug dealer.
Deacon Mark just drove her to the park.

Well hit and miss as expected. It was more straight forward than even I expected but:

John - wrong about being the father, but right about protecting his son

Kevin - wrong about him being the father and the pendant

Billy - right about him, said he was neither the killer nor a molester, but he was even sadder than i thought wow. willing to die actually begging for it. As it unfolded I really thought the gun was gonna be unloaded instead by Billy.

Ryan - right about him being the killer more or less accidental and getting the gun from Mr. Carrolls but wrong about him being the stalker. He was the lawn boy. And the park scene was much less complex than i proposed which makes sense.

Dylan - right more or less, but his motivations in covering up were to keep the kid i guess not his dealing

Deacon Mark - right about him

Pretty good ending really. Felt very very sad and tragic but.... Lori blaming Mare well I get it she was lashing out but Billy was right it was all because John could not keep his D*** in his pants.

As soon as Brenda walked in the game place or whatever I was like - why is she introduced now - gotta be Mare is gonna find out there was no repeat affair and it would all unravel.

Can't figure out why John would not get Ryan to retrieve the gun again and dispose of it though. Or replace the two bullets. I guess the cameras. Risky. But that was the clincher for Mare of course. But if the gun wasn't missing bullets, or it wasn't put back Mr. Carroll might never call her.

The kidnapper/girls in the bar basement seemed kind of unnecessary to the storyline now. I kept expecting them to add to that in the finale.

Wow, that was a really good episode to wrap everything up. Loved the ending shot of her going into the attic. As much as I would love a second season, I don't think they should considering how they ended it here. Awesome series.

Hope they don't do a season 2. Was a well contained story that can't really be duplicated.
As for tonight, I loved last week but wasn't as big a fan of this one. Didn't like the neat little bow with everyone voluntarily confessing for the sake of show length (who would pretty much doom their kid to a conviction like that, let alone themselves?), or the pretty straight forward plot end that many had guessed. Still really good compared to most tv though.

They probably assumed that Mr Carroll wouldn't have a clue that the gun was taken for a few hours in the middle of the night. Heck, I probably would've put it back in the random old man's shed, too. And you make it sound easy to replace those old rounds on that gun. It probably would've raised more suspicion if someone was going around trying to buy two old rounds for a gun that matches the murder weapon.

True - the odds of him knowing it was missing were small.

As for the rounds - granted we did not see this - but the odds that he did not have some spare rounds is low. Who only has enough rounds for the current load for any gun? I would think he would have kept spare rounds in the same drawer. But who knows.

Did they ever explain the necklace? That seems really out of place now, especially with the zoomed in image of the receipt that showed it was bought by Billy.

Not really but he easily could have given them a different name - Billy's and paid in cash.

But this and couple of other things are a little loose under scrutiny of retrospect - like I get that John was just steered by his D*** but I mean he went to the trouble of using pre-paid burner phones. So

1. if you are gonna give a fake name why even use Billy's name. Use ANY other name.
2. why commemorate a date that is gonna tie to an event that only you and a few others were at
3. if you are so careful that you use burner phones then when she calls your real phone at a party don't leave it in your coat. You would think he would be checking it out of precaution anyway.
4. why was John just not slipping Erin money to get the surgery. over time a little here and there even so it is not a big chunk. keep her happy and she doesn't go BSC on you.
5. Dylan was the one concerned about the journals but... John had easy access to the house why was he not trying to find the journals and the necklace himself. In fact we know John was there for some period watching Kenny after he tried to kill Dylan he could have searched then (when he asked Billy if he was ok - same wallpaper as when Erin made Kenny's dinner). And likely could have been there anytime under the guise of checking on Kenny.

oh well. not huge holes but oddities at least.

You are assuming John even knew the journals and photo existed. Nevertheless, it's not like the police found them, so why would we expect John to find them.

I thought that was a phenomenal ending, and this show is easily the best of the year. There is no way Winslet doesn't win an Emmy for this. I agree with others that stated that I hope they don't try to make a season 2. This show was perfect. So well acted, so well written, such a satisfying ending. I thought they did what so many murder mystery shows can't do, which is stick the landing. The ending was believable, the character motivations were understandable, the red herrings weren't too ridiculous, and the loose ends were all tied up. I really have no nitpicks with the plot.

...also, I nailed the John's the father, Ryan's the killer, Billy's a scapegoat prediction. Whiffed on Dylan being somewhat involved, though.

well i didn't say anything about the photo - but he knew about the pendant of course. as for the journals. most people know someone keeps journals if they spend any time with them. but it is possible only jess knew.

and another thing - i suppose it was just a hunch but maybe it was widely know that she kept journals - but Jess never mentions journals to Mare or anyone that I recall early on. But Mare goes back to her apartment to ask her where Erin's journals are kept. That was when she was suspended, and pretended to forget her phone so Zabel was not with her because she wanted to find them herself.

Anyway no biggie. And I agree it was very well done all around. Acting especially.

And good job on your prediction - it sure seemed that way I was just looking for something that was possible and more of a twist.

I think it's stranger that there were rounds in it at all. The gun was given as a keepsake/commemorative item when he retired and obviously wasn't being used for self defense.

Teach your kids gun safety even if you aren't a gun family.

John could have kept his D in his pants, or Ryan could have unloaded the gun and used trigger discipline when "scaring" Erin.

I guess if either of those things happened we wouldn't have this incredible show. Bravo.

I posted this last week. Credit to the writers because I was wrong on the killer and the connection it would bring. That felt personal as *****

The scene where he ran home and told his mom was gut wrenching. And seeing him in that prison uniform and the viewer thinking about what his mom is thinking just crushed me. He was taking up for her for her **** bag husband cheating on her. Now he's locked up. That was tough to watch.

They mentioned when Billy was getting out b/c he cooperated. Don't remember exactly (maybe something like in June). My guess is that John will get somewhat longer for lying. Have no idea about Ryan, but he is a minor.

Not sure I would ever repair a relationship with my best friend if they sold out my son to the po po for an accident. I left it disgusted with Mare and her lack of compassion. Did not like the character. Inconsistent. Does follow the law when it suits her, but follows it to a t when it devastates her best friend's family.

One thing I didn't see get cleared up. Dylan's girlfriend Brittany mentioned that Dylan was gone at 2am when she walked around the house and couldn't find him. And Dylan asked for a lawyer when that was brought up by Mare and Zabel.

Did we ever figure out what he was doing at 2am on the night Erin was killed?

Overall great story. I think Lori should have been arrested for lying to the cops twice. Not sure how she got off Scott free on that one and was ballsy enough to blame Mare. She was ready to let her brother in law get killed to keep her 9 year from what likely would have been light time, not exactly an equal trade.

Umm, he pointed a loaded gun at a girl in a threatening manner. Sorry if it was an accident, but he still effed up and that girl is gone forever. Actions have consequences.

Mare asked him and he said he couldn't sleep and went for a drive or something like that... whatever it was, in the long run it was inconsequential to the investigation whether what he said was true or not.

And Mare planted heroin in her daughter in-laws car.

I was surprised by this one too. I was also surprised the kid could get into his dad's phone - and that he left a message. Dad had to know immediately and would have been checking his phone every 2 minutes.

On the positive side - the guy was overcome with guilt because he slept with a high schooler and got her pregnant. It was his fault (in his mind) his kid committed murder. Willing to kill his brother or kill himself after and I totally buy that.

I say this and agree it's the best TV show I've seen in a long time. Last season of Ozark is the only thing that comes close for me, although this is totally different kind of show.

I'm not arguing actions don't have consequences and the kid deserved what he got. I'm arguing her following the law above all else is out of character from the human element she has shown, and from what I would find endearing in a character struggling personally. Not sure if you have kids, but knowing that developmental stage and having a split family, it is a confusing time for a kid like that and they don't exactly deal with their problems with the long term impact in mind. Mare's best friend, who, as far as I can tell, has been there for her throughout her own personal and professional struggles, had her life torn apart by a cheating husband. She was raising her cheating husband's incest product, a Down syndrome kid, and a kid who accidentally killed someone while his dad is in prison because of him. And instead of being there for her you beat down her door with an army of cops to take her kid to jail. Not saying it wasn't right, but just saying it is not something I liked about the character.

I'm not even sure what I liked about her character. Maybe that she seemed to love her daughter without condition? She loved her grandson, but was perfectly fine putting herself above the kid by keeping his mom out of his life and doing nothing to help her other than attack her while she was struggling. Grandma was a much more likable character - remorseful for what she did wrong and selfless to put the best interest of her loved ones first.

She didn't sell out her son to the po po - she was the po po and not just that but the lead investigator.

The entire family went to great lengths to cover up a murder and blame ANYONE else. I'd be seriously pissed about that - a confession of an accident for a minor would have resulted in much less damage and a lighter sentence for everyone. That and you know..... her oath.

The decision to cover it up:
got Dylan shot and nearly killed or paralyzed
got Kenny in prison
got Jess beat up and nearly killed too
caused huge friction between Frank and Mare and Faye, etc.
got Mare threatened and vandalized by that one girls father
nearly got Billy killed by his own brother
got John in prison
got Billy in prison
indirectly (but tangentially) got Zabel killed maybe

She also did not lack compassion she was gut wrenched when she figured it out - if you couldn't see that on her face I don't know what to tell you. She knew what it meant and she felt terrible but she had a duty. And owed it to all the collateral victims, the town, etc.

She's also been through a wringer - her son killed himself, a longterm kidnapping of someone she knew well finally solved, killing of her then partner and semi love interest, a murder of another person she knew, the cover up and exhaustive investigation.

She did do something incredibly stupid and it nearly lost her career. Turns out she was right about Carrie though.

As Siobahn said late in the episode Easttown is better off because of her.

Come on now. That didn't happen.

She literally told the other cops to stay behind her. She opened the door and walked in alone to confront them and without any drawn weapon.

The "army" of 6 cops or so was there in case anything went down - Ryan had time to go home and tell his mom and prepare. He was fleeing her so maybe they flee in a car chase. Or who the hell knows maybe they want to go down in a blaze of glory in a shootout. She knows Lori lied to her repeatedly. It was backup nothing more.

She also showed compassion talking to Ryan in the most calm concerned way in the confession and in the cop car going to juvi. She cared about his welfare in his lockup as well.

I'm not saying you are unjustified if you do not like her - but she did what she had to do and I think she did it as calmly and controlled as she could.

I struggle with how I feel about her decision to turn the kid in.

I picture my best friends kid in that situation and honestly don't think I could do it.

However, if she blows off the old mans report about the gun, and then he goes to another cop about it and it was found out that Mare did nothing with it, she herself could go to prison.

This type of moral dilemma is what makes great TV.
