Personally, I think the show is as good as ever, and have loved these past two episodes.

For those saying it's gotten "too dark," where did you expect a show about a depressed hitman who kills his acting coach's partner to go? The entire premise of the show has been that Barry increasingly paints himself into a corner, and now we're seeing the repercussions of that.

That said, I honestly don't find it any darker than it's ever been. This is a "dark comedy," and that's exactly what these two episodes have felt like to me. Barry is growing more desperate, sure, but the laughs/tone have still been there.

murdering the guy who started him out in acting school, and one of his war buddies who was going to tell his wife about what was going on...

that seemed a lot darker than this season.

other than the opening scene, where Barry murdered the guy who hired him.

although, I guess if you hire a hit man to murder the guy who cheated with your wife, you aren't such a great guy either.

Exactly. To me it's absolutely consistent with where it's been.

Gene talking and trying to get help from worker on a break still is cracking me up. "Oh that's just one of the thirty dogs that mauled me"

But they at least made him [somewhat] likeable when he was in the acting world.

I suppose it was always leading to this, where he can no longer compartmentalize his two lives and they inevitably come crashing into each other, but I pretty much can't stand Barry and don't enjoy his character much anymore. It's not even a character I "love to hate" like a Walter White, it's just a crazy murdering psychopath. It's not any "darker" per se, just less enjoyable.

Granted, we're only two episodes in, so there's a lot of places it can go from here.

Thank God for Noho Hank...

The best scene of the episode was the way-too-long shot of
Noho Hank watching Cristobal leave.
Amazing sound design in that scene

I don't think you are intended to like Barry right now, and I bet you are far from the only one to not enjoy that kind of show as much.
I think it was pretty natural for this show to come to this place, and it has had a lot of pretty real and frank commentary on this sort of mental stuff.
Personally, I am enjoying it, but I don't think I'd want a whole season to be more serious in tone, and I expect the humor to still frequently take place.

I love the little nuances and details and camera work in this show. I loved the idea to film from inside the fast food joint instead of in the parking lot when they show Barry bringing the food out to Mr. Cousineau in the trunk.

The whole Mr Couisneau thing just feels completely off killter from the whole history of the show, and just not even remotely believable. And yes, I get that it's a dark comedy that already stretches believability, but who in their right mind would go along with what he is doing? And his whole thing of not even remotely understanding the impact of his actions? Just weird.

I think your answer is that Barry has basically snapped and is living in an alternate reality in his mind.
Mr. Couisneau just doesn't want to be murdered

Quote:

I had forgotten Fuchs had gotten himself out of the country, Stephen Root is one helluva chameleon when you look at his career as a whole.
I'm not a movie watcher, but we have started watching series like Barry, Ozark, etc... on HBO Max and Netflix. Didn't realize Stephen Root was Milton Waddams in Office Space AND he's 70 years old now. I'm officially old.

On top of being a fantastic actor, he picks awesome roles. I've done the "Milton!" reaction probably 10+ times in various shows and movies.

Also, my friend's dad played the doctor/dad of the actor Barry killed. Same actor who played Jesse's dad on Breaking Bad.

Turned on closed captioning to see what the phrase was and it said that it was a phrase in a foreign language. I assume it's Chechan but don't know for sure.

Agree with everyone that this was a glorious return to form for the series. The technical support scene is an instant classic. "Alright, sounds like we were successful. Is there anything else I can help you with today?"

Serious question: are we supposed to have sympathy for Sally? She's probably my least favorite character and I am not invested in her and Barry's relationship at all. I get that he's been aggressive with her and she was right to kick him to the curb but she is just so vapid that I have trouble rooting for her. I'm weirdly more invested in NoHo Hank and Cristobal's relationship than B&S.

I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to like her. She seems like she's meant to be a satirical critique of the worst type of the narcissistic, egocentric and vapid actress.

I can't stand her either. Not sure why we needed a full minute of her crying on stage but I suppose that was the point.
