I just can't get over how disgusting and depressing the entire night was, from top to bottom.

You know I respect you, but man, let's gain some perspective and go to bed. On the other side of the world people were getting woken up by tank shells and artillery. One multimillionaire making an ass of himself while all of his myopic fellows clap because the prompter tells them to isn't exactly a sign of the end times.

All last night showed was that Will Smith has some anger issues, Chris Rock's comedy has been neutered by childrens movies, but he can take a slap like a champ, and people in general are slipping towards idiocracy.

For as tasteless a joke it was, I thought Rock did a great job keeping his composure afterwards. He could have lost it as well and turned the place into a brawl.

I would like to make a point that Will Smith and Chris Rock brought together, in a slightly civil discussion, TCTTS and aTmAg. So beautiful.

I get that she has a medical condition but the joke was tame...certainly nothing to get that upset about. If Smith really wanted to defend his wife over that joke there were several other ways he could have gone about doing it. He knew he would be making an acceptance speech shortly...he could have addressed it then and probably come across sympathetic. Now he just looks like a lunatic.

It's not all about the slap. It was the whole sad, pathetic show, on a night that usually brings me so much joy and motivation. That, and I can lament the Oscars while *also* following the war in Ukraine/feeling for the people there. They're not mutually exclusive. In fact, I'll throw out a rare F16 compliment and say that the two main war threads there are THE best news sources I've come across, hands down, and I've been following them on a daily basis for a month now. That, and the resolve the Ukrainian people have shown has been far more inspiring to me than any movie ever could be.

So please spare me the talking to.

And the wife and I both found that WS acceptance speech to be beyond cringe worthy. Just apologize and admit to being in the wrong and abandon your stupid script about "being a vessel of love". I could not have been more out of touch or forced. I honestly thought he would sincerely apologize.

Her having alopecia was news to me. That would infuriate me if my wife was struggling with hair loss and it was affecting her in a tough way and some other dude ragged on her…just being honest. In a setting like that I like to believe I would never do what WS did tho.

But do we know Chris Rock knows about her condition? To me it honestly always looked like she had a healthy head of hair but just shaved it because she was weird.

If he knew she was struggling with hair loss from a disease/condition, it's a pretty bad miscalculation to include that in the routine.

If the comedian calls you a ****, or whatever, then if everyone laughs you just gotta laugh with everyone else and mutter under your breath. If everyone gasps, then maybe you'll get a quick apology and you can mutter under your breath.

This is a weird situation because instead of security immediately taking someone down like they would at a show, this was like the guest of honor going up an attacking the emcee at the yearly industry awards expo.

Jada guest starred on an episode of The Equalizer recently - I didn't even recognize her, between her being bald and seemingly having some work done. Pretty sure I said to my wife how bad she looked. I had no idea she was fighting some sort of condition - I honestly wouldn't have made the comment.

That being said, Will acted like a little ***** and should've been escorted out. Hell - it almost looked like they moved him and Jada closer to the middle of the stage between the incident and him accepting his award.

It's entirely possible that Chris Rock didn't know. I remember back when Elia Kazan was given the lifetime achievement award, Chris Rock was host and joked: "You better get Kazan away from De Niro, because, you know, he hates rats." (Because Kazan testified during the McCarthy hearings). But De Niro himself was the one who presented the award, because he loved the guy. If he knew that, I doubt he would have made the joke.

I noticed they never showed Jada on screen after the slap or when Will was yelling. I wonder if that was purposeful. Really curious to see how she reacted to it.

She's a black woman essentially saying that right as the Oscars were starting to embrace diversity, expand their membership to include more black members, and hire a black producer to run the show, all in response to the whole #OscarsSoWhite thing, one of the most famous black men on the planet assaulted another black man onstage, thereby setting back all the progress she felt had been made. She then talks about how many years Smith has spent trying to rehabilitate his image, in the wake off all his box office bombs, how he used Instagram to help do that, and then how stupid it was to destroy all of that goodwill literally minutes before reaching the top of the mountain again. And then she goes off on him again for doubling down in his acceptance speech.

"Essentially saying" is doing a whole lot of work there. LOL

Your translation is a thousand times more readable than her thread.

I was also annoyed they had Puff doing the GF tribute? Lame.

Also the GF tribute was too short and had the Smith/Rock cloud over it as it happened right after.

Chris Rock did a documentary in 2009 called "Good Hair" where he sort of investigates black women's issues with hair. It makes me think he's a least a little sensitive to issues related to that. I sort of think that maybe he didn't know, he made the comment off the cuff not really thinking about it, or he has an axe to grind with the Smiths. Judging from his reaction, I'd bet it was one of the first two.

I love Norm but why on earth would you expect him to be honored at the Academy Awards? If the Emmy's snubbed him I'd be upset as he is most famous for work on TV.

I am not defending him, but it would be tough for any female to lose her hair. Especially a vain Hollywood type who has always been considered to be beautiful by just about everyone. He has probably seen and felt up close and personal how hard it has been on her. That being said, it's inexcusable and something that should have been handled with harsh words off camera.
Forget that noise. Jada is just a crappy person. Yeah, I'm sure it stinks to lose your hair, but in the long list of terrible things life can throw at you, I don't think Alopecia makes my top 25. She is strutting around acting like she is some kind of hero. Nah. If you can't handle the negativity with grace, then do what normal people do and strap on a wig. Otherwise, roll with it.

Let me help you Jada - in response to Chris Rock's very tame joke you stand up, smile and flex. Disaster averted.

Totally. He's humiliated. Tried laughing it all off but she gave him a look and he overreacted to somehow regain some pride. He's a very lost man.

I don't give that marriage long now. Too much drama and emotions.

True...i agree 100%. Just theorizing and trying to put myself in his shoes. If my wife was losing her hair, it would be extremely hard on her and would be a pretty tough issue in our household at times...if one can't understand that, then they just don't understand women. Hell, it's hard for a lot of men to lose their hair....and it is supposed to happen to men. If a buddy of mine joked about my wife losing her hair, i'd tell them to shut their f-ing mouth. That being said, (a) Nothing excuses what WS did, (b) It's possible that Chris Rock (like most of us) just thought she shaved her head, (c) I have a hard time drumming up any sympathy for JPS, and (d) I get the sense Will Smith is a wreck and that his marriage is probably in shambles and that he was unpacking a lot more than just frustration from a hair joke there...still doesn't excuse that type of behavior.

Animators react to last night:

Side note: the way they talked about animation being for kids and generally degrading it when it's the genre that's been propping up the industry the last few years, routinely has some of the best box office returns, and drives every major blockbuster was disappointing.
