In my opinion You don't commit battery on television to defend your wife's honor instead you turn the Shame on Chris rock

If this happens you man up walk on stage grab the mic and Shame Chris rock by stating this joke is in bad taste

That your beautiful wife has allopecia and that this joke is uncalled for. Say you love her with all your heart and you should slap the hell outta this man but won't stoop to his level

State she deserves better than this joke as does anybody suffering from an illness

Then drop the mic

That's how you defend your wife in public by not assaulting a man in front of possibly children watching but instead make him look little and guilty in front of everyone

Okay dude... you do you.

I'm gonna keep rolling my eyes at the ridiculousness. Apparently, I have not been able to enjoy ANYTHING for the last 30 years of my life because there just aren't enough characters/actors who have one white parent, one hispanic parent, grew up in Texas, and went to a state university.

How will I ever live in this world. Where is my hero? When will I see him win his award. OH THE HORROR....

EDIT: Hold on, I thought of some other definitions I need in my hero: Christian and libertarian.

I'll let you know when I think of some others, so you can have your buddies in Hollywood make sure I get my hero, next year.

The Oscars was scheduled to end at 10:00, but it dint end until 10:42. These award shows always end well past scheduled time. I didn't tune in to the Oscars until 9:00 because I was watching Fox animation shows: Simpsons, The Great North, Bob's Burger, and Family Guy.

It's YOUR *opinion* that it's crazy, though. For a queer black or Hispanic girl, seeing someone like herself win an award like that can be EVERYTHING. For the same reason so many dads on this board have talked about how much Rey in Star Wars means to their daughters, this is the same thing. Seeing someone like yourself on screen, and then seeing that person celebrated by winning an award, shows that it's possible to achieve something like that, especially when it's literally never happened before. So why insert yourself and mock and roll your eyes and do everything you can to show the opposite of empathy for what is otherwise a cool moment for someone other than yourself?

Yup, like seeing a black president really made things peachy.

The dude sits back while his wife gets plowed, but a joke about her being bald makes him defend her honor? Pardon me if I find that a little odd.

This is the logical end of it all though isn't it?
Once Hollywood's self importance grew large enough, they stated turning on each other. Rock with an awful joke to earn points outside the room at the expense of those in it, Smith thinking it was OK to assault someone with hundreds of millions watching. Privilege clashed with privilege and they both lost. As did the industry and the show, even if short term it gets them press.

I think I agree with this take. Tonight was a brand of disgusting hypocrisy, from all parties involved, that I've never quite seen before.

Totally disagree. The joke wasn't even offensive compared to many others. No one punched Ricky Gervais for much more personal attacks on people's character, not hair. The reaction was totally disproportionate.

We'll I probably shouldn't have said anything. I really have only seen the clip and did not watch the oscars to see all that led up to it, so I just spoke my mind on what little I saw and then read

My bad but I figured I had good input.

I get what you're saying, but mere seconds is plenty to decide whether it may not be the brightest idea to b**** slap a comedian for a joke on international live tv. The history of his relationship with his wife just makes it even more absurd. If anything, it sure seems like that's where his real problem is.

This is really dumb man.

You don't have a problem relating to people you see on screen and that's great, nor is it surprising as you're half white and most people on tv probably look a lot like you.

But for other people, and especially kids, who don't often see people who look like them on tv or the big screen it is a big deal. There's tons of videos about films like Black Panther, Coco, Encanto, Turning Red, Shang-Chi, and lots of others where seeing someone like them was really meaningful.

You don't care, great, don't care. But just because it doesn't mean anything to you doesn't mean it may not mean a lot to someone else.

She had no hair due to a medical condition. And Rock certainly knew that.
Commenting on a woman's looks is basically third tail these days anyway, especially in Hollywood with all that's happened the last few years, but with the medical condition on top of that it was definitely a step too far. It was a cheap shot he didn't need to take.
Of course it doesn't excuse the reaction, but what amounts to a physical abnormality outside of her control as a punchline is wrong. I would not be surprised if even Rock admits that at some point.

Nope... you just can't be reasoned with. In a single post, you basically claimed I can't understand what it's like to be someone else, while devaluing any particular characteristic, creed, ethnicity, religion, or any other defining quality I may have.

So, what is the pre-requisite on who deserves representation? Skin color? Okay, then how dark does the skin tone need to be? I'm just as dark as the woman who won the award. Are you saying I'm not dark enough to need to feel represented?

Why does her upbringing warrant a callout for representation and mine not? Simply because I have white people in my family? This is why I find your arguments to be utterly ridiculous. You and everyone like you make them on a sliding scale that changes daily.

Therefore, I roll my eyes and go to a discussion board where people go to post their opinions... and post my opinion. Then I have to deal with people like yourself and TCTTS saying I should just shut up and not have an opinion on things that happen around me.

It truly is amazing how far up your own butts yall are.

I mean, they might, right? There's a lot of awful parents out there or simply ones doing everything they can just to keep a roof over their heads.

And even if they've got parents who are really trying, there's some kids and parents that just don't connect or relate in a lot of different ways. I don't really get the point you're trying to make.
