Honestly this thread is pathetic. You nerds shatting yourself about every detail need to get laid. I am not even a fantasy fan, I just got hooked on the GOT books then the series and enjoyed Jackson's trilogy years earlier.
This series, so far, has been vastly entertaining. For those of us that don't go to Tolkein conventions, or whatever the F y'all do, it's a fun ride. I think the CGI has been solid. I like the characters thus far. The Galadriel Elf warrior female badass or whatever is a very attractive young lady and doesn't need to look she's walking a Victoria's Secret runway. Also don't understand the consternation about Elrond. Maybe tap the breaks and realize that the Elrond of the Fellowship is a much older, changed, and reluctant character than what we are seeing now and this series may be the character development to get him there.
This is really good tv is a year of so many epic disappointments. Enjoy it.

I think some of us that are the most fine with Elrond and Galadriel know or remember that this show is taking place, what, thousands of years before the trilogy came out?! Some of these people don't think change can occur over that timespan.
for the record, Ive never felt like what you said was racist. You are saying that these regions/races/groups of peole were portrayed as being a certain way in the books (and previous movies), and that it doesnt really make any story-related sense to change it.DallasTeleAg said:

Entwives should still be around. Exact timing is a little hazy (intentionally on Tolkien's part), but they disappeared at some point during the War of the Last Alliance. I'm enjoying it. Is it as good as the LOTR trilogy? No, but you (should) have already known that it wasn't likely to be. At least I am getting the feel of it being a quality production, and feel like we're in Middle Earth (even if it's different from the one we know in the Third Age). Comparing it to the dumpster fire that is Wheel of Time, this is worlds better.

- I don't get the Galadriel hate. I just don't. I DO, however, disagree with using her as the main character solely because I feel like they're asking for criticism in doing so. They are deviating from her known story line, which has quite a bit of detail throughout Tolkien's body of work. I know they don't have the rights to use The Silmarillion, but still, her story is pretty well known, and messing with it is going to piss people off. I get why they're doing it, but I would rather them have created a new character to explore this world with.
- Is it weird that I really don't notice the skin tones of the actors? Like, Disa being black doesn't bother me in the slightest. I love Disa, btw, the interplay between her and Durin was terrific.
- Khazad-Dum was amazing.
- I know some people like 'em, but man the Harfoot scenes are not doing it for me. I feel like they always throw the pacing off.
- Meteor man is not Sauron. I know we're deviating from what Tolkien wrote, but I'm not sure we're going to deviate THAT far. Why would the elves learn how to make the rings of power from a wild looking amnesiac? I'm not sure he's a good guy either. Nori didn't burn her hand on the fire, similar to how the elves in Sauron/Morgoth's fortress in the first episode couldn't feel the heat from their torches. Not sure what to think with that one. But I am ready for them to pick up the pace on his storyline a bit. They leave this mystery hanging through the entire first season without answer and I'm going to be ticked.
So what exactly do they have access to? Quick google search says just The Hobbit, LOTR, and info from the appendices. So no Silmarillion, but does that include The History of Middle Earth Books or strictly info in the appendices?

In theory, Gandalf shouldn't show up in Middle-Earth for another few thousand years. That was established in sources Amazon doesn't have the rights to though IIRC, so it's possible they could ignore that.
My theory (and kind of hope) is that it's a Blue Wizard.
CondensedFoggy did the research and if it's a wizard it should be a blue wizard based on time, but I also would t be surprised if they made it Gandalf (or the Maiar known as Gandalf before he was Gandalf - screencrush theory)
Does the Tolkien estate have any sort of veto power (apart from the limits set forth in the license)? I have to hope that the estate would put the kibosh on Meteor Man being Gandalf.

There are some Tolkien writings about Gandalf wandering among the elves during the second age. I think he was talking about the undying lands, but they could use that statement to have Gandalf show up in this show.Red Five said:

Not going to care about the nitty gritty discussion of the show, but this is far superior to Wheel of Time so far. Also those complaining about weird races playing elves/dwarves should be glad this show is nothing in comparison to what wheel of time did. I don't really care either way but WoT so much more noticeable they were going for the full spectrum of inclusion.
Wheel of TIme would have been better if it had used Journey's Wheel in the Sky for its theme song.

The problem is that those things are often a symptom of the need for and focus on inclusion. Everything takes a backseat. Plot modifications sometimes have to be made. Needless scenes and events must be shoehorned in. Compromises with characters have to be made. Actors are chosen on inclusivity and not just ability or fit for the character. Etc. Etc.
Examples:
End Game and the Girlpower moment: This was incredibly cringeworthy and about the moment I lost interest in the MCU. It was unnecessary, contributed nothing, made no sense, and just flat out killed the battle with Thanos at the end. It was so bad it's now a joke (Girls get it done). The rest of the movie was chalk full of plot holes and ultimately made inconsequential thanks to Loki. More time should have been spent on the plot and development and less time on concocting a reason for all of these women to be in the same place at the same time and cheesy dialogue to make sure you knew they did it on purpose.
Lightyear: Disney/Pixar made such a huge deal about the lesbian friend beforehand and made sure the movie was super inclusive, but then they forgot all of the key components of a good movie and it ultimately sucked. A lot of the performances felt phoned in, the character development was crap, plot holes abounded, and it felt like a knock off of the 90's Lost in Space movie . On top of that, the premise was confusing to many and very poorly communicated. It felt like inclusivity drove the plot and character development instead of being the other way around.
On the other hand, The Mandalorian did a great job with inclusivity. It was seemingly either an afterthought or byproduct of the plot and characters in the last episode of season 2. They had their End Game girlpower moment, but it was so subtle, organic, and woven in with what Din was doing at the same time that it didn't even register or feel out of place. It wasn't pointless. It didn't draw attention to itself. No one made a big deal about it. The plot just flowed right through it and moved on. The episode was overall really good except for Luke's face.
