Just got and and thought it was a pretty fun movie. It definitely had some laugh out loud moments. When they started playing "Push" the entire theater busted out laughing.

Just got home from catching it in Seattle. Theater was full and the audience, mostly female and dressed in pink, was having a great time.

I thought it was original, funny, and fun. It raised a lot of ideas and didn't always know what to do with them, but I appreciated them playing outside the box. It won't be for everyone. A lot of Texaggers will hate it, but my wife loved it and I think there's a large audience who will really enjoy this movie.

ken waking up to the patriarchy was a funny and unexpected direction.
Thanks and gig'em

These are the words of somebody who spends way too much time on the internet. I am certain you are in the <1% of people who had that thought

"Where I see love she sees a friend", "anywhere else I would be a 10". It is not incredibly deep or complicated to read into that the song was him being pissed off. Combined with lines from the trailers of Barbie "AND KEN"

The black clothing, eyeliner, I got vibes of him being a 'villain' at the end of the song

Buddy, if your profile picture and posting history are any indication, you are about the least qualified person on this site when it comes to how to act around a female, much less a girlfriend or wife.

Off to check out his profile.

I really don't know how you can watch this movie and think it's a man hating movie. Barbie literally apologizes to Ken. And then everyone at the end of the movie is happy. You have to have the thinnest skin to get upset at just the word patriarchy to get upset at this movie.

Funny movie, with a fantastic performance from Robbie and Gosling. Excited to see what Gerwig does with the Narnia movies next.

Couldn't agree more. Just got out and absolutely loved it. We were crying laughing and I was genuinely moved at times. Gosling and Robbie were fantastic, Simu Liu made me laugh every time he was on screen too.

I could see super online people taking it that way… but a vast majority of society isn't going to draw that conclusion.

So in the movie the Ken's took over, then the Barbie's reclaimed their rule back. Both were wrong to try and rule exclusively. In the end when Ken asked for I think it was something like a single seat on the supreme court or something they were told NO. So basically women only. Ken was happy to be put in his place ("Kenough") and left it at that. Imagine the roles were reversed and the men won in the end and told the Barbies, "sorry - stay in the kitchen. Ruling is for men only". I imagine that wouldn't have gone over well either lol.

The message in the end should have been that EVERYONE should be able to be what they want to be. That's really all it would have taken to make this from an OK movie to a great movie.

I think if this was the actions in the real world, sure. But this was happening in Barbie-Land. And the Kens who asked for a seat were given some other position within their system. I also didn't read it as a 1 to 1 reading of fairness. The whole point of Ken in the movie was that Ken is more than his connection to Barbie. Ken shouldn't have to control or be controlled by Barbie.

The narrator did have a line about how after the Kens got a position in the lower courts, than eventually the Kens would claim equality in Barbieland just like how women would in real life after a time

I mean it is not like I was sitting down watching Barbie trailer breakdown/ song analysis. My entire windup to watching this movie were the trailers TC would post here and that at some point Amy Schumer was attached to the project (which I am fairly certain I learned here)

So I guess you and Funke can go pat each other on the back not being on the internet or something (not proud of what I had before even if it was relevant to the movie)

Then looks at how you both combined have something like 7 times my posting count here

Sorry, I honestly wasn't trying to offend you. I'm admittedly terminally online.

I was mainly just trying to distinguish how someone like me (or really anyone discussing the movie on a forum like we are here on TA) would interpret that scene compared to someone far less online (like 90% of the worldwide moviegoers).

The concept of Barbie and Ken having an existential crisis is a good premise. Riffing on the patriarchal differences between Barbieland and the real world is also a good conceit. But overall I think the movie fell a bit flat. They could have cut 30 minutes, remove some of the melodrama, punch it up a bit with some more jokes and it would have been much more enjoyable. Good set design and performances, but its not something I would want to watch again.

Saw it with my wife and two daughters. Enjoyed it. And didn't get offended at the patriarchy stuff because they laid it on so thick. I took the overall message as one of self-determination, for men and women. Also told my wife that I wanted a "The Patriarchy" tshirt

And my wife was basically in tears at the usage of Matchbox 20. Friggin hilarious.

I'm surprised at all the negative responses to the movie. Like another poster said, they talked about how eventually the Kens would gain equality just like women eventually in the real world. I think the fact that so many people are bothered by a feminist message indicates that unfortunately those messages are still needed. Plus the final message to Ken was that he needed to stop blindly pursuing Barbie and needed to figure himself out first, which I think is a good one.

This all the way.

This movie wasn't "anti-men."

It was anti toxic men who won't leave women alone when they clearly aren't interested. It was anti assh*le men who are incapable of defining themselves outside of their dominance of, unwelcome pursuits of, and negative relationships with women. I mean, if it wasn't beyond apparent already, the Snyder Cut dig underlined this explicitly, putting a certain TYPE of man in this movie's crosshairs. Not just "men" in general. Anyone who can't see that, or has a problem with it, well… that speaks far more negatively about you, how you see yourself, and what your definition of a man is, than this movie ever could.

That, and the whole patriarchy thing was clearly a joke played for mostly for laughs, to the point where it's just baffling to me how much certain people are latching onto that aspect.

I'm not saying everyone *has* to like this movie - not by a long shot (even I admit it fell a bit flat in the real world, especially the Mattel stuff) - but the narratives being painted by a very specific crowd right now are just some of the dumbest, most spiteful, most willfully ignorant sh*t I've seen (not only in this thread, but especially the Barbie thread on that other board). I don't know, it just feels like the absolute crescendo of the complete and utter bad faith bullsh*t from the ultra anti-woke crowd.

All I know is that there were four women in our group today and each one of them teared up multiple times during this movie. In fact, you could hear sniffles throughout the theater during many of the more poignant moments. That incredible line about mothers standing still so their daughters can look back to see how far they've come especially resonated. Another one of those moments was during America Ferrera's big speech in the third act, which was literally met with applause in our sold-out showing. And not in some kind of vindictive, you-go-girl, down-with-men way, but because it spoke to women in a way you could absolutely feel, as if someone had finally articulated exactly how they feel at times. As cliched as it sounds, they felt seen, and anyone in that theater with a heart or empathy could feel it in response. We talked about this a ton at dinner afterwards, and then I got a text from my sisters who a had just seen it as well, and felt the same way. They loved it.

Not to mention, the movie was creative as hell, super fun, and damn near hilarious throughout. Our crowd ate it up, and a record-breaking $155M domestic this weekend says crowds all over the country are doing the same.

In the face of all that, I just can't imagine being a grown ass man who then has to run to the internet or, in the case of dipsh*ts like Ben Shapiro, make a f/cking YouTube video "destroying" the movie, playing right into the movie's themes, which these morons so clearly missed. Like, what the hell has to go so wrong in a 40-year-old man's life that they need to express so much hatred and disdain for something A) not at all meant for them, and B) that most people see for what it actually is - a positive message about knowing and accepting oneself before/instead of attempting to define yourself by someone else.

That, and it somehow still blows my mind how desperately these same people *also* need to define themselves by what they hate.
