I just don't understand why any man would want to go see a movie based upon a girls doll. I have not seen it and it may be a great movie but I just don't understand what would make a man buy a ticket.
Some of y'all have such sad and fragile visions of your masculinity.

Masculine men in general aren't lining up to voluntarily see this movie. They're not itching to see it on their own. Beanie wearing hipsters and artsy fartsy types are much more likely to be amped about a Barbie movie than your avg roofer, rig worker, etc.

This movie is not at all targeted at masculine men.

From my time playing college football and serving in the military, I've found that people who thump their chest about masculinity are usually the least masculine. Real masculinity is going to see Barbie by yourself in a pink shirt and giving zero effs about it.

I'm not taking the side of the poster you responded to, and I would see this movie with my gf if she really wanted to, but this weird redefining of masculinity that some guys have bought into over the last decade or so has been a real head scratcher for me. Not calling you a ***** directly, but no, wearing a pink shirt to see the Barbie movie by yourself is not "real masculinity" lol. Again, I'm not claiming that refusing to see it or ****ting on those that do is "real masculinity" either, just that doing obviously feminine things isn't masculine just because you don't care what people think about it. I'm waiting for the day someone says "I'm so masculine that I sucked a dick and give zero effs what anyone thinks about it".

Sorry for the derail, though I don't think I'm capable of making this thread worse.

So sort of like the Spartans and the Sacred Band of Thebes?

They would say going alone to a showing of Barbie and wearing pink was too gay for them.

I just realized the major missed opportunity (especially with RG's bleached hair) to do an "I'm Just A Ken" parody of Simple Plan's "I'm Just A Kid."

Review from Bill Maher

"OK, "Barbie": I was hoping it wouldn't be preachy, man-hating, and a Zombie Lie - alas, it was all three. What is a Zombie Lie? Something that never was true but certain people refuse to stop saying it (tax cuts for the rich increase revenues, e.g.); OR something that USED to be true but no longer is, but certain people pretend it's still true. "Barbie" is this kind of Zombie Lie.

Spoiler alert, Barbie fights the Patriarchy. Right up to the Mattel board who created her, consisting of 12 white men! The Patriarchy! Except there's a Mattel board in real life, and it's 7 men and 5 women. OK, not perfect even-steven, but not the way the board IN THE MOVIE - which takes place in 2023 - is portrayed. And not really any longer deserving of the word "patriarchy." Yes, there was one, and remnants of it remain - but this movie is so 2000-LATE.

At one point the Barbies have to win over the Kens, and they are told to do it by pretending to act helpless and not know how to do stuff. Helen Gurley Brown called, she wants her premise back. Yes, that WAS a thing. I saw "Barbie" with a woman in her 30s who said, "I don't know a single woman of any age who would act like that today."

I know, I know, 'How could I know about the patriarchy, I AM a man!' That argument is so old and so silly. Of course, none of us can know exactly what others go through life, but I can see the world around me, and I can read data. The real Mattel board is a pretty close mirror of the country, where 45% of the 449 board seats filled last year in Fortune 500 companies were women. Truth is, I'm not the one who's out of step - I'm living in the year we're living in. Barbie is fun, I enjoyed it - but it IS a #ZombieLie. And people who don't go along with zombie lies did not take some red pill - just staying true to CURRENT reality. Let's live in the year we're living in! Hi Ken!!!"

Fair enough, they must have made it a bit unclear because reviews and reactions from a lot of people I know pick up on something that isn't merely attacking some radically toxic dudes. I've read reactions from a lot of women who thought they took it too far. But, I guess all of that is easily dismissed by you, as usual.

I'm sorry, it's very funny how you keep clinging onto reviews and reactions of other people and trying to dismiss other people's first hand reviews. It's unhinged and funny.

This^. It was happening in the Oppenheimer thread, too

I thought it was pretty decent as a dad of 2 daughters. Messages like this are often exaggerated for effect. It doesn't matter that the real Mattel board is more evenly men and women. This isn't some historical retelling, it's a fictional movie…

Saw it tonight on HBO, glad I didn't spend several hours out and 15 dollars to see it. Loved the originality, Gosling was amazing as was the whole visual of it. I actually liked the last scene with Rhea.
But I have a headache from being over the head with the same themes over and over and over again. I didn't even mind the the ideas they were going for and realize I wasn't the target demo, but it didn't even try for nuance, it was just "men bad, women oppressed" for almost the full running time. Ken was even bad for much of it. There wasn't a single positive male in the movie, they made the whole board white males, every bad character was male, not a single bad female character. All men apparently are easily manipulated. It could have been so much better. Their entire concession to men was 30 seconds where she apologizes for taking Ken for granted, The irony is that over the years when women are put in positions like that in movies there's blowback, but this was lauded.

We watched this tonight and were entertained and we laughed just considering surface level. Gosling STOLE this movie. He was awesome.

As far as the politics...too on the noise and frankly not even relevant and outdated. Biggest gripe I have is that I assumed that at the end of the movie we would come together and find compromise for the betterment of both Barbie (women) and Ken (men).

NO. This was a cynical, political treatise masked in comedy that does nothing but perpetuate hatred between the sexes. It ended with a female world that is more sexist and discriminatory than the real world and promoted a life where men and women reject one another. Every time I thought a good message was being crafted...it got smashed. And we were ultimately left with an ending where Barbie goes to get here vagina checked out. Funny on the surface but I know the director meant this movie to make a statement and I think it backfired on that front, IMO...which many don't share and that's fine too.

I'm going to go finish Blue Eyed Samurai now and immerse myself in more man hating.

edit: Margot Robbie is an absolute smokeshow. God almighty.

Watched it on tv to see all the fuss. Pretty much what I expected, just over the top silliness. Laughed at them in the real world antics. Besides that, all the parts in Barbie land were just bad.

I think a lot of people get that theme out of the movie but I think they are missing the point. I think the major theme of the movie is about relationships mainly mother/daughter. A lot of the major hits in the movie are the highs and lows of the relationship of the mother and daughter. Barbieland is this perfect place but after Barbie spends time in the real world with the mother and daughter she chooses to stay in the real world, even though they've just spent the whole movie telling us how awful it is.

To be honest I likely would have never seen it but am staying at a resort that has DVDs to check out and we have been picking a movie to watch every day

So far: The Three Amigos, Kingsman SS and Barbie

Due to the hype we all thought Barbie would be good…4 thumbs down.
