North by Northgate was always embarrassing. Full stop.

My wife with her 3 stripe Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, multiple degrees, seven patents and amazing control of her Glock 26 could kick the **** out of you (and me to be fair).

That's a strong woman, and real men aren't bothered by them. We're attracted to them. And she's a Republican.

Yeah, probably too much.

But his overarching thesis, one supported by personal friends on staff, is that anyone who didn't buy into Barbie and firmly reject SoF is a QAnon (I have little idea what that is) and he-man woman haters club founder with wives too weak to think for themselves.

That's not the case, but you do you and copy that post far and wide.

Enjoy.

And Ben Shapiro is just about always right. Maybe he's wrong about this one film being woke, anti-man, and unfunny, but he is very smart and usually dead on about things so I tend to believe him more than Hollywood libs when it comes to this. Liberals don't debate him, they shout him down and drive him violently off of their campuses etc. But they can't debate him...it never ends up well for them.

Pick a political or social topic. Ben Shapiro would absolutely CRUSH you at debate. You would either have to awkwardly concede, or just throw a tantrum, call names and storm out (which is a pretty common response from leftists who try to debate him).

Any time Ben has stepped away from debating goofy reporters or wet behind the ears college kids, he most certainly doesn't "destroy" liberals.

I don't know how/why this is all going back to Ben Shapiro. Read through reviews on IMDB, a lot of average moviegoers have similar qualms with it.

So is it true that this movie uses the word "patriarchy"? (In a way that doesn't make fun of feminists)?

This was a good thread:

Its kind of taking a theological look at the framework of the movie, but that helped kick it out of the political framework that seems to be dominating the conversation about it.

That thread uses the word "patriarchy," so I'm afraid I'm going to have to unread what I just read, and discount the entire thing because of some ridiculously stupid/arbitrary rule I just created in my head.

(Seriously, thanks for posting. It's pretty incredible how deep and insightful the movie is at times, considering it's a comedy based on a toy.)

Without trying to sounds like an a-hole, maybe I'm just stupid, but this is looks a lot like polished writing that really says very little. What I took away was that the message is "just be okay with who you are." I think that's a horrible and depressing message, but one that's shared way too often these days. Be okay with who you are means not aspiring to be more. It is designed to sound like a relief but is devastating in practice.

I agree w your first part. Lots of words and not a ton of substance.

The last part I would say, I don't think the message is "don't try to achieve" or "don't try to be the best version of yourself". I think it's more be comfortable in your own skin and don't let society define what kind of Mom or boss or sister or whatever you should be.

We get it, you're liberal, and in Hollywood, so you're naturally going to believe there is a patriarchy "bogeyman" out there, but it's a laughably ridiculous premise to most normal people who are not in coastal bubbles.

Anyone who mentions "the patriarchy" it in a non satirical or mocking tone gets an immediate eye roll from most normal people. And the "smash the patriarchy" feminists are the absolute craziest of crazies.

Why even see/discuss movies if you're immediately committed to pressing down full-throttle on political takes from like, 2009? Just get your anger fix by going on Twitter and then patting yourself on the back on the politics board about how much you owned someone, or whatever.

Overall, I think it was mediocre, but still endearing. Between Gerwig, Prieto, Robbie, Gosling, every other actor, and Baumbach, the latter was clearly the deadweight. Sometimes I think he should try writing a novel or tv series (though he tried with The Corrections, which I think many on here would enjoy) to recalibrate himself; give your English degree its ultimate test, especially with the former.

Nope. Your take is wrong. Because….satire!!!

As if we are to believe Barbie being called a fascist by a teen is making fun of the left and not, in fact, being serious. In a film made by Greta Gerwig.

Showing the Mattel board as all idiotic males is satire and comedy. Why make the message about how it's actually half women and women can do anything they put their minds to? Because …satire? It's about a toy! Don't take it so seriously!! (From the group currently taking a country song veeeery seriously)

But it's not meant to push an agenda, right? Don't take it so politically they say. Well, they are the ones making it so under the guise of satire and comedy. Most of middle America doesn't view it that way though.

If people on the right did the same they would be called every phobic in the book. But when the left does it it's comedy and satire.

Not buying it for a second.

I did the Barbenhiemer Sunday and was glad I saw Barbie last, it was a nice pallet cleanser.

I don't believe I am the target audience for a Barbie movie, but I still enjoyed the film. The set design was fantastic and I think the cast did a really good job. The movie didn't necessarily take itself too seriously and was fine at being the butt of the joke sometimes (the narrator with the "don't cast Margot Robbie" line for example).

I think they could have done a better job exploring issues women face. Things like the mother/daughter relationship(them growing apart and communicating with each other). The mother's fear/anxiety (dealing with juggling a career and family, unrealistic beauty standards). But at the end of the day, this wasn't even a 2 hour movie. They had to move things along quickly, and I think the pacing was overall fine. This is also a movie about Barbie, so I can see them keeping the focus on her and I liked the ending for her and for Ken.

I can see why conservatives could be upset with this movie. The whole fighting "the patriarchy" thing. And I do think there is merit to the argument of "political/cultural messages hiding as comedy to avoid criticism" but idk if this movie is doing that.
I think they might have been able to write it more towards a "whether it's a matriarchy or a patriarchy things can go off the rails quickly if we don't treat each other's as equals." But that would take more finesse and would have probably upset a lot of feminist who praise Barbie on one hand and hate Barbie on the other.

Overall I think this was a fun time at the theater. The set design was great, the music was fun, and the writing overall was good.

That's my review that no one asked for.

Havent seen the movie but my (non-political) wife and daughter did. They liked it but my wife thought it could have been more "balanced."

I will say this, using terminology that is almost exclusively the domain of terminally online progressives (fascism! patriarchy! etc) is pretty much guaranteed to alienate more conservative viewers. Maybe that was the point or maybe they didn't recognize how it would be received by those that don't talk in those terms. If they didn't see it coming, it is fairly rich considering how much progressives have policed language over the last few years.
