The only men getting mad at this movie are the ones who either haven't seen it yet, or the ones who think it's okay to be the kind of man this movie is mocking.

Those are the only two options, huh?

If that was their argument (only certain men are like that not all) then why wasn't there a single man in the film that wasn't an ignorant pig? There was clearly no distinction made.

Why didn't ANY of the marketing of this movie reflect the true plot? Felt like a bait and switch to a lot of people - including my wife. Which in turn makes the negative response more visceral. My wife and 13 yo daughter both rolled their eyes the entire time and thought it was preachy drivel. And clearly lots of people on this thread that have seen it feel the same way.

We can agree to disagree about the true message being pushed throughout the film but to act like my stance shoehorns me into being a misogynist is disingenuous.
He obsessed over this Barbie movie for weeks (months?) before it came out. He was never going to not like this movie.

But it's "weird" for men who haven't seen it but have read about it or rec'd critical feedback from friends/family re: the political messaging to comment on it.

Yes it's weird for people who haven't seen a movie to comment incessantly in its spoiler thread.

Fair enough, they must have made it a bit unclear because reviews and reactions from a lot of people I know pick up on something that isn't merely attacking some radically toxic dudes. I've read reactions from a lot of women who thought they took it too far. But, I guess all of that is easily dismissed by you, as usual.

I'm sorry, it's very funny how you keep clinging onto reviews and reactions of other people and trying to dismiss other people's first hand reviews. It's unhinged and funny.

Aren't I just comparing a lot of "first-hand reviews"? What makes what some people took away from it less valid than TC or the others who gobbled it up? I read what TC thinks, I read what professional critics think, I read what a lot of my friends think. My observations are based on all of that. Not sure how that's unhinged.

It sounds like all the time you spent reading reviews and discussing it, you could have just went and watched it.

Saw it earlier. It was fine. Not the greatest movie ever but watchable, had funny moments and Robbie is super hot.

Nothing in the movie was that bad or shamelessly political. The themes of the movie that triggered conservatives are way overblown imo and they're also dripping with some layers of sarcasm. It very much fit the mold of what you'd expect for a movie designed for women and based on barbie.

My wife and my whole fam of women went to see it last night.

They hated it. Said it was too over the top man hating with no plot. They said they almost walked out.

I just don't understand why any man would want to go see a movie based upon a girls doll. I have not seen it and it may be a great movie but I just don't understand what would make a man buy a ticket.

Simple. My girlfriend wanted a dinner and movie date night and she also wanted to see Barbie. She wasn't able to go see it last weekend with her friends, only the barbie party they had a day later because we were traveling.

It's 2 hours of staring at Margot Robbie, had some comic relief and was nice to turn my brain off for a bit and also enjoy time with her.

Not much more to it than that.

Did you explain to them that TC said the only way you'd reach that conclusion is if you don't get the movie or you're a toxic man?

I was clearly not referring to women in my post. I was talking only about men's reaction to the way men were depicted. That's it.

Also, I'm not going to chastise anyone for not liking the movie because they expected more of a comedy, or something more lighthearted. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion in that regard.

But by all means keep putting words in my mouth.

Because cinemark is running a promotion and the first 5 men at every showing get a free dick to suck.

- Greta Gerwig, the writer/director of Barbie, wrote/directed Lady Bird, one of my favorite indies of the past few years. Her partner/co-writer, Noah Baumabauch, has written/directed some of my favorites over the past decade+ as well (Greenberg, Frances Ha, Marriage Story, etc).

- Ryan Gosling is one of my favorite actors, and I find him especially good in comedic roles (see: The Nice Guys).

- Margot Robbie is incredibly hot and incredibly talented.

- I try to see everything I can that's part of zeitgeist, especially if it becomes a pop culture phenomenon.

- I don't think of movies in terms of "movies for guys" vs "movies for girls." As long as it's good, I don't care who it's for or what it's about.

Saw it with my wife and daughters. Thought it was good. I took the overall message as self-determination. That said, I'm not gonna fault someone for not getting past how it used the "smash the patriarchy" path it took to get there. I just think a lot of folks are weary with that crap, regardless of whether it was intended as complete sarcasm or whether the filmmaker intended it

I am an executive for a very large, fairly woke corporation, and the "we want to hire and promote everyone but people like you" message is very real for a lot of males now. And by real, i mean legitimately putting "goals" on a slides in town halls where the SVP of HR says "These are goals and not quotas, quotas would be illegal" but everyone knows what they want. Lots of people feeling attacked right now

So I think I get what the film was going for and it doesn't bother me, but I also get why some would have trouble getting there.

I thought that was a great movie. It went from completely absurdist and hilarious to incisive to a thoughtful ending. Would have been easy to have been completely silly the whole time, but Gerwig used interesting (though not new) social commentary and stereotypes to keep the story moving, leading to a final act that dealt with what do women really want out of life.

The first 30 minutes up to the "Do you ever think of dying?" line were hilarious and so good. All the music was great, including the big Ken's number near the end.

i didn't get it when Gerwig, Robbie, and Gosling signed up for this, but I'm really glad that they did.

Also, a super minor detail that they nailed was using PXG golf club during Kendom scene. *Exactly* the golf clubs that the bro patriarchy would use.

Saw it tonight with the wife. I enjoyed it, had some good laughs throughout the movie. I didn't notice anything "woke", anti male or anti Christian as one of my friends on FB has described it. Apparently I lack discernment, as she would say.

great movie, very funny and touching at times.

as is often the case these days, the obnoxious culture war arguments around this movie are distractions from the fact that it was essentially pro-Mattel corporate propaganda. we're supposed to buy that will ferrell's CEO figure cares more about feminism than the bottom line? or ignore the fact that this whole movie was essentially Mattel getting to "correct the record" on what Barbie was supposed to be about all along?

I'm not sure what we are supposed to think about Will Farrell's character because that was one part of the movie that did indeed suck

Once the tie in with America Ferrera's character and her job/drawings were revealed we didn't need the Mattel board and that storyline at all.

Any other time I wouldn't have seen Barbie in theaters but the official marketing has been good (what little I've seen) but the social media craze between this and Oppenheimer really made me want to see it. Like I think in 5 or even ten years people will still be saying stuff like "man remember that summer of Barbenheimer?"

I also just ordered Ken's fanny pack off of etsy
