FAQ
Q: Don't you have anything better to do?
A: Apparently not.

Q: You left off my favorite movie from (year)! Why did you do that, you idiot?
A: I picked 10 movies to represent each year. The Oscar Winner, the box office champ (starting in 1977), and the 8 movies beyond that with the highest user ratings on IMDB.

Q: I still think that's stupid.
A: That wasn't a question.

Q: So what about my favorite movie?
A: All movies from that year count. The 10 listed are just a guide. Vote however you want to.

Q: How come you didn't include 1939, the best year of movies ever?
A: Because then I would have had to include every other year that somebody told me needed to be included, and this way was easier for me.

Q: Oh, so you'd rather do it easy than correct?
A: Yes.

Only 2 years have made it out of the first hour of voting with 100% of the vote. And one of them isn't even the higher seed!

At least in the polls I've done on here, things really skew heavier to the "older" entries in the morning and then I guess a lot of younger people get on later in the day. But yeah, seeing some of the early #s makes me think I should have just thrown them all out there at random cuz there are some heavily one-sided "lower seed" leads already.

Fantastic. I definitely have some recency bias, but some of those recent years are top-heavy and the list gets spare fast.

There should be a special accomplishment for Brooks putting out both Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein in the same year.

Most were pretty easy, but the three matchups I had the most difficulty picking were 1987 vs 2012, 1990 vs 1997 and 1972 vs 1998.

Damn. 1962 is a strong entry for me.... even though i was born 4 yers later

Lawrence of Arabia - epic and such a impact on some of the great directors to follow, Speilberg and Lucas to name a couple
To Kill a Mockingbird - one of the greatest American classic novels in a fantastic movie
Dr. No - the beginning of one of the greatest franchises ever
The Manchurian Candidate - seriously great little political thriller
Lolita - an often overlooked or dismissed early Kubrick film
The Longest Day - great war movie
Cape Fear - an original thriller with a hell of a cast Mitchum and Peck

really?

to me 1972 was like the Godfather and not much else. Godfather carries a lot of weight but 1998 was pretty deep.

Since the Quasimodo crying gif "Is not available" I'll just add a couple of Maureen O'Hara as Esmeralda just for the hell of it.

90 vs 97 was tough indeed. Basically a coin flip, but for me 97 edges out because it has my favorite movie out of any of the 90 and 97 bunch, Good Will Hunting.

My other tough years:

  • 2016 vs 1988
  • 1975 vs 2007

2021 is pretty meh...I don't think I've even heard of some of those movies.

Really enjoy these time capsule videos. Relevant to the thread.

1997 NYC, opening weekend of Titanic, with Good Will Hunting, LA Confidential, Home Alone 3, Amistad, and Flubber also playing.

8 hours and 70 votes in,

7 single-digits seeds now trail by at least 25% of the vote
One matchup is still tied 50-50.
Another is separated by 2 votes.

1994 is not in there and I think could easily win the whole damn thing.

Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Lion King, True Lies, Dumb and Dumber, Speed, The Mask, Ace Ventura, Stargate, Natural Born Killers, Blown Away, The Client, Little Big League, Little Giants....

and a little movie called.... CABIN BOY...
