I guess not enough of us were in theaters in 1939 to remember what a monumental year it was, what with the still-fresh introduction of color and the "talkies".

Seriously though, it should have beaten 1977, but no issue with it falling to the killer '93-'95 run.

If you take away the extra 5 votes from 1 IP address on 1939, it was annihilated by all 4 opponents.

Winner of 93-94 is the obvious winner, with the loser being #2.

If you do a third place vote, it would be a blowout.
Does '93 beat '95?

I say...yup!

Therefore...

Two of the 3 matchups are laughable blowouts, the third is surprisingly close.

It's an odd thing that I like the beginning of these tournaments so much more than they end. it's like the first 2 days of march madness.

By the way, a ton of movies left out of the exhibition question...

Men in Tights
Mrs. Doubtfire
D2
Ace Ventura
The Mask

etc.

You could have a pretty solid poll of just 93 vs 94's non-top 10.

But, TPE clearly wanted to massage his confirmation bias for his beloved movie.

Interesting. It's basically a referendum on Jim Carrey. If you like him, then pick 1994. If not, 1993 has the better list from what you posted.

For sure. If you don't like Carrey, it's no contest, but as a big fan, it's such a tough call.

Men in Tights is hilarious and right up there with Dumb and Dumber.

And there's so many other mini showdowns in there.

Better kid sports movies: Sandlot and Rookie of the Year, or D2 and Little Giants?

Better comedy with the lead actor in prosthetics: Mrs Doubtfire or the Mask?

I'm glad I'm not voting cause I don't think I can choose a year.

I have to shorten my ballot because I haven't seen most of the kid ones except Rookie of the Year, Hocus Pocus, Sandlot and Santa Clause.
It's a total blowout for 1993 other than Dumb and Dumber for me.

The only one of the 20 I haven't seen is Hocus Pocus. I threw it in to make it an even 10 vs 10, and I know a lot of people my age love it.

Pretty much every other movie, I grew up watching them endlessly on VHS or on tv.

Shoutout to Christopher Lloyd who was randomly in Addams Family, Dennis the Menace and Camp Nowhere.

Great job. It was fun!!!!

1994 was clearly going to win. But plenty of drama in other matchups. And a real dark horse in 1977 as Star Wars still can throw it's weight around.

I think a few years from long ago "should" have done better but it's the demographics here. It is what it is.

Personally I'd go 1994 > 1995 > 1993 in that debate

I think those are the top three years which is crazy that they are consecutive. And the 90s is clearly the best decade.

My top 5 would probably have 1999 and 1962 in there. And most of the next 5 would be 80s and 1998. 1969 is maybe 11th. The 70s has some absolute all time great films (SW and Godfather for example, also Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, 2001, Jaws, Alien, etc.) but just does not have the depth in most years.

Anyway. Kudos.

Seconded. This was fun! For my picks, the semifinal between 1994 and 1993 was the true championship. My order goes 1994 > 1993 > 1995.

99 would have been the overall top seed and gotten a slightly better series of matchups, but The Phantom Menace's 6.5 rating brought it way down.
1987 (Three men and a Baby, 6.1), 2000 (How the Grinch Stole Christmas, 6.3) and 2007 (Spiderman 3, 6.1) were all similarly affected.

The top four seeds by average IMDB score (out of 10) were: 1995 8.11, 1994 8.09, 1999 8.08, and 2006 (also 8.8).

If you add in even a fairly low 7.2 ranking (for this field anyway) as a replacement for those box office winners,
1999 goes up to a ranking of 8.15, and likely propelled it to at least the semifinals.

Doing so likewise for 1987 would have only moved it from a 14th seed to a 13th seed, but for 2000 - which did very well, mostly because of Gladiator I think, it would have gone from a 12th seed to a high 7th seed, and 2007 from an 11th seed to a 6th seed.

It's an imperfect system. I've thought about doing a second installment with what I would loosely describe as the most bad-ass movies of each year, all personal choices, maybe limited it to 7 or 8. That would get me a lot more grief than this one, but there were plenty of years where my voting was made up of which one had the most movies I'll watch anywhere, anytime or that are just perfect representations of that era.
The top flight years would probably have about thes ame content for that tournament, but a lot of them would be very different, and likely do better by being leaner in terms of fan favorites as opposed to critically acclaimed stuff.

That was fun. For me personally, my ranking is 1995, 1994, 1993 in that order. It's kind of splitting hairs though. And I was going off of only the listed movies for this ranking. Saw the deeper movies listed for 94 and 93, but would need to see 95 too for comparison to see if an "extended" list ranking woul dbe the same order for me.

I'm thinking about the potential for "Best Movie Fight" next although it would be a massive group undertaking and probably way more than 64 seeds.

Regions like - Best Superhero Fight, best Unarmed Fight, maybe just a boxing category or a sports movies category, ,maybe one is "1 vs. 100 style" , gunfight (laser guns included), maybe a comedy region for stuff like Indiana Jones vs. the Sword guy in Raiders or Brad Pitt throwing Bruce Lee into he side of a car in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Maybe a best 2 on 1 (TWSS) so Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon Maul can square off against Riggs & Murtagh vs. Jet Li. Maybe a man vs. monster category.

I would definitely need a lot of help because I haven't see many recent action movies that aren't Star Wars / Superhero films. And would probably want to keep it limited to movies that had at least some sort of mainstream release in the US so we're not 9 levels deep into China and Japan and Korea movies.

Interested to hear ideas.

Off the top of my head…

The bathroom fight sequence from Mission: Impossible - Fallout is the best of the past ten years, IMO.

Then the Neo/Morpheus dojo training sequence and/or the Neo/Smith climactic fight from The Matrix are obviously up there too.

And as bad as the movie is at times, the title fight from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice doesn't get enough love. Not only is it incredibly well choreographed and beautifully shot, but it's actually believable in terms of Batman staying alive/being able to do real damage to Superman, something I had no idea how they were going to pull off. Unfortunately, it was all overshadowed by the "Martha" ending, which, personally, I honestly didn't mind.

Work in progress regions for best fight
We could probably end up doing a field of 64+ for every single category and then have them all square off in final battle tournament

Best Superhero Fight
Best Sword Fight (includes lightsabers)
Best Boxing Match / Sports Movie
Best Gun Fight
Best 1 vs. Everyone fight - feels like Captain American has already won this.
Best Battlefield Fight - this would be like the opening of Gladiator or the Battle of the Pelleanor Fields
Best Comical Fight
Best 2 on 1 Fight
Best Martial Arts Fight
Best ... not sure what I would use - a fight where it's not Martial Arts, no weapons, just 2 guys slugging it out. Like the stuff in the Bourne movies maybe. Or the fight on the bus in
Best Man vs. Beast/Monster Fight

That's 11 "regionals". I'm sure I'm missing a ton. Maybe best fight on a vehicle to get some love t every fight ever on top of a train or a truck and all the stuff in Fury Rd.
Maybe best "magic" fight? I'd love to see Voldemort/ Dumbledore from OOTP in there, but not sure how many more movies have magic fights in them, other than Big Trouble in Little China of course.

Would have to establish what everything counted as, so we don't have overlap. Like Wolverine in the mansion in X2 would be Best Superhero fight, not best 1 vs. Everyone fight.
