Choose whatever movie has the closest relation to Big Trouble in Little China, be it by release year, by actor or actress, screenwriter, etc.

While this is true, Always should never be compared to Jurassic Park and Schindler's List in 93 or Brooks with Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein in 74.

The easiest thing to do would be to just average out the imdb scores. You could create a "sudden death" poll that was only open for a few hours where people could vote again.

Where did I compare Always to his 1993 works? I was just correcting a factually incorrect statement.

From MSFC: "There should be a special accomplishment for Brooks putting out both Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein in the same year."

From BES: "Spielberg, 93"

From you: "As well as 89"

You were comparing Spielberg in 89 to Spielberg in 93 and Brooks in 74.

I stand corrected (never even heard of that movie), but are you actually suggesting that year is even comparable to the other two mentioned?

Unless your post was just years with two movies from one director, which is rare, but not that rare.

By the way, both Spielberg and Brooks are fighting it out for second behind Victor Fleming, who did both Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz.

I ranked all years (except 2020) from 1959-2023 and made 4 regions. The other two regions will go live at 9 AM CDT tomorrow. 1984 is an 11th seed in one of tomorrow's regions. Its average score was 7.76.

90 votes in. One matchup is separated by 2 votes, everything else is pretty squared away, maybe one other has a chance to get close.

Will probably close polls around 7:30 tomorrow morning, post results, and put in new brackets. Appreciate everyone voting, despite the challenges, this is always one of my happier things to do on TexAgs.

Note how you left out the statement where I was told that Spielberg only directed 1 movie in 1989, to which I responded Wrong. I didn't even consider the Mel Brooks statement when I simply pointed out that Spielberg had another year where he did 2 movies. And had completely forgotten Minority Report + Catch Me If You Can. Great movies, but even combined do not reach the greatness that is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Apparently pointing out a fact is making a comparison? I only commented because the statement that Spielberg only had 1 movie in 1989 was incorrect.

I get that you haven't heard of Always. It was not one of Spielberg's finest.

If anyone wants a comparison, both of Mel Brooks movies are superior to Always. As is all of the other Spielberg movies. Always is a remake of a 1943 movie called "A Guy Named Joe" (which has brief footage on the TV in the Freelings' bedroom in the original Poltergeist movie). Always was updated from WWII to fire bombing using WWII aircraft - one of the characters dies and returns as a ghost to lead a young pilot and his former girlfriend toward one another. What the movie has going for it is some great cinematography, John Goodman, a good score by John Williams, and a cameo by Audrey Hepburn.

Day 1 Results!

Two lessons were learned on Day 1 of the tournament.
1. Seeding doesn't mean jack squat.
2. The passion for the years 2015 and 1965 is almost exactly even.

99 votes were cast in the last 24 hours and that resulted in the utter destruction of the You Must Be the Other Guy Region, as the top three seeds, and four of the top five, were ambushed and knocked out. I thought it was a fluke of my fellow early-rising Star Wars nerds when 16th seeded 1977 took 4 of the first 5 votes against #1 2006, but it was never even close. 1977 got almost exactly two-thirds of the vote in pulling the upset.

The oft-predicted upset of 1978 over 2019 happened as well, by a slimmer margin, while #14 1987 blew out #3 2012 and #12 2000 crushed #5 2013 with 86% of the votes.

Things were a bit more stable in the What's In The Box? Region, until you got to the 4/13 and 5/12 matchups. #13 1990 whipped #4 1997 with 70% of the vote, and #12 1971 destroyed #5 1960 with 95%.

The 3/14 matchup between 2015 and 1965 was never separated by more than 2 votes the entire day from the multiple times I checked in. Whomever voted between 6:50-7:05 this morning ended up being the deciding vote for 2015 to take the win. 50.5%-49.5%.

Had it remained tied, 2015 would have won on The Official Chipoltemonger Tie-Breaker System which states that the year with a film with the closest ties to cinema's greatest all-time masterpiece, Big Trouble in Little China, would advance. 2015's list of movies includes Hateful 8, which stars Mr. Jack Burton himself.

Here's all the numbers, you nerds! These two regions will resume on Monday.

Day 2 has arrived! This round will stay open from Friday morning until Monday morning. We've got two new regions that will square off against each other in the Final Four. The "I Just Shot Marvin in The Face" bracket is led by 1994, the overwhelming choice to win the whole thing, while the "Mr. Anderson" bracket is led by 1999.
