This was a trial about damages only. There was already a trial where he was given the chance to deny it happened and deny he defamed her. That issue was already legally settled.
So, continuing to deny it and go after Carroll was always a poor legal strategy for this trial.
His lawyer also was simply incompetent. She would have had no credibility in front of the jury after a couple of days yet alone by the time she got up to a give closing statement.
The question only Trump knows the answer to is how much $$$ was it worth to him to go into court and mumble insults at people.

As far as I can tell, that is really all Trump did here. He denied Carroll's allegation that he had raped her. That sort of denial absolutely should not give rise to civil liability

It would be like Kavanaugh's bat **** crazy accuser suing him in civil court for defamation because he denied that he sexually assaulted her. I'm not sure I know where you're going with that, but then again I guess the feeling may be reciprocal with regard to my post.
You're saying the difference is the ability to effectuate coming after a group, and because F16 can't get at the first three categories of victims owing to being a message board, it's kosher to use the last category of victim as support to show how important it is we speak up about the persecution of [home team], just like the Pastor was saying.
That's a pretty nuanced view of it I'm not sure occurred to the author, but still it would be nice if he wouldn't have mentioned the communists, socialists, trade unionists, etc.
