Assume Bezos is not getting to stay in the Lincoln bedroom anytime soon.

As Leavitt and Bessent both pointed out, Amazon did not add a Biden inflation indicator nor a Biden Chine tariff indicator.

Reminder you can never, ever trust a snake like Bezos. All his walking back things at WaPo was just noise to try and smooge up to Orange Man.

Trump should put Amazon on he debarred list for all federal agencies.

Quote:

The White House criticized Amazon (AMZN) after a report said the tech giant plans to display how much tariffs have increased product prices on its website. Amazon stock was lower in morning trading.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the reported plan "a hostile and political act" by Amazon. The e-commerce giant will soon show how much of an item's costs is derived from tariffs next to its total listed price, according to a report by Punchbowl News Tuesday. Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I assume they'll also be adding the profit component realized by Amazon in the same transaction? Transparency!

Amazon should also publish how much Prime delivery has contributed to emissions in our most congested and most vulnerable (love that term) communities.

Did they show tariffs before? Because tariffs have existed?

BTW - Amazon was a HUGE violator of not collecting local sales tax where they should have, taking advantage of laws not quite keeping pace with technology / marketplace changes.

Again, Trump should just ban any use of Amazon in the fed government.

I have no problem with this. This is a very easily quantified adder and pointing it out is reasonable. We do the same with sales taxes. If the a Trump admin wants to go the tariff route then they should be open and honest about what it is and what they believe the costs and benefits are.

This. It's a fine idea, as long as the values are actual tariffs and not SWAG/politically motivated 'estimates'

Agreed. Its BS Amazon will do this now but not before. If you're going to be transparent, be transparent. The result would still be the same if they don't list the tariffs. If the consumer deems the product more than they're willing to pay, they won't purchase it. That consumer can make their own decision about whether the tariffs were the cause of the sudden price increase or not. The average person often isn't that intelligent but they're certainly not stupid.
I would imagine this administration could make things very uncomfortable for Bezos (who's political support changes with the wind).

I agree. Something like replacing water softener (or media) will turn into an unexpectedly major expense. ($2-3K)

Trump needs to get out of this, or show a plan, imo.

Poor Trump just can't stand it when anyone does anything which might not make him look good.

Look how much he flipped out over the polls which came out showing his approval ratings tanking.

Looks like Amazon is doing a "Hey, don't look at me," kind of thing to try and keep their customers from going elsewhere,

The thing is, if the item at Amazon has had an increase in price due to tariffs, that item at Walmart, HEB, Target, Home Depot, etc. will also be higher, so once everyone sees prices go up, their gimmick will be pointless.

What about all the other tariffs prior… or taxes… or transportation charges… or profits?
AgGrad99
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Everyone is doing this.

The reason they didnt before, was because the lower rates of tariffs were baked in, and had been for decades, along with all the other costs they incur.

But when you have a 145% increase overnight, customers kind of want to know why. Surely everyone understand the difference, right? This isn't an effort to say 'look at this one line-item cost of doing business'...it's a 'this is why your widget is more than twice the cost this week' measure.

Suppliers are being transparent, in an attempt to keep their customers happy. Amazon is no different.

Again...this is happening everywhere (like it did 6-7 years ago).

This. My girlfriend decided to get into sourdough baking and I went to Amazon to buy a Dutch oven. I searched for American made Dutch oven. In the results, were about a dozen Dutch ovens that did not show the country of origin. I had to search outside of Amazon on about half of them.

They were all made in China.

The only American made 7.5 quart lined Dutch oven was 4x the price of all these Chinese manufacturers and I was happy to pay it. I have been buying products outside of China for years. It takes tremendous effort and shouldn't.

I've got no issue with them displaying all added taxes.

I do however have a problem with Amazon not disclosing a product's country of origin. If Amazon is unhappy with the incurred tariffs, perhaps tell us why these are incurred by telling us where their goods are made.

Don't worry, it's okay that you're getting unnecessarily charged extra money for goods because the multi-millionaire Fox News hosts who live in gated neighborhoods said so.

No, I believe it was in the 35% range.

But since the costs of everything jumped like it did...I frequently saw a line item added, specifying the tariff cost.

And to be honest, I prefer this type of measure.

Once costs go up, it takes forever for them to come down...if they ever do. When they have a line-item listed like this, and the tariff goes away...so does the line-item cost. It's better for the consumer like this.
Science Denier

How will they determine how much the tariff cost in the price of the good? I hope the Trump admin goes after them for false advertising and slams them hard.

Make them prove their "tariff added" amount. For every item.

For example, vendor is hit with a 10% tariff. So, they lower their price and the net increase is 5%. Or 4%. how do you determine the actual cost of the tariff? Amazon would have to prove by comparing the previous price of a product to the current price of the identical object. Otherwise, they are not being truthful.

Good luck!!

One other thought, when Trump killed the tariff exemption for Temu/ ali express, he not only hurt the consumer, but also really helped Amazon.

Too bad. I like the guy, but his economic policies and big spending will hurt almost as much as his DEI etc will help. Not to say that the democrats will be worse, but stuff like this will kill the midterm chances for republicans.
