You would think with all the lawyers specializing in truck accident lawsuits, that companies would take better care to hire good drivers.

Ah ok. Sikhs came to California in the 1700s I read somewhere. Married some local Mexican women and own large farms. Maybe they are into trucking now.

I have 30 years in the trucking industry and well over 2 million incident free miles driven. This upcoming spring, I'm letting the CDL endorsement drop. As someone with a bit of a health issue and restricted to a 1 year medical card, the amount of medical hoops I have to go through to stay compliant just aren't worth it for me anymore.

All that being said, the fact that these non-domiciled CDLs are being issued like candy to non-English speaking foreigners here on visas or here illegally makes my blood boil.

Try to do the right thing and it's an uphill battle.
Circumvent the legal channels as an outsider and it's easy as pie to get behind the wheel.

It's open season on America's highways.

H1Bs in Truck Driving? Now that is something new.

I am sure in the next 30 years if we don't do something, we will have an H1B President.

Some people scoffed when I flagged what was happening in the tech world. One clueless lawyer guy here thinks his business is safe and calls others "average" and demands that they "be the best in the world" when these foreigners are just charging 30% of American salaries to undercut while living 10 to an apartment.

Welcome President Rajesh Kumar (4 year contract from Infosys).

Gets weirder as they seem to be withholding information as part of a larger investigation.

Quote:

DOT inspectors log the trucks and trailers on inspection records. From those records, we can match truck #S147 and trailer #8084 to this carrier.

WHITE HAWK CARRIERS INC
USDOT 2866642

A recurring pattern I've identified is the use of a spouse's name when registering a new authority . . . This tactic serves to obscure relational ties between carriers, allowing them to evade exact-match searches within the USDOT/FMCSA system and thereby complicating the detection of repeat offenders.

The previous trucking co. was registered to "SIMRANJIT SINGH." Another related trucking co. is registered to "HARPREET SINGH." And another one registered to "KINDERBIR SINGH."

I've reviewed jail booking records in the area, and so far, there is no corresponding arrest report or booking entry for either individual. Per local news articles, no charges have been filed.

This is an easy scapegoat. The reality is there are so many creature comforts designed for American citizens to park their ass on the couch which leads to travel/labor intensive jobs being no longer appealing to them. A Somali dude doesn't care about what's coming out on Netflix Tuesday or which team plays Sunday night football. Trucking companies are not dealing with a surplus of labor supply and just choosing the cheapest option.

Analogy:
Just because your kid is a bum doesn't mean you go ahead and pay college tuition for the neighbor's kid. What you do is be responsible, man up, be a parent for your own kid, beat the crap out of them as needed, and discipline him/her and teach them to take on the world.
Imagine a world where every parent ran away from their responsibilities and took the easy route.

This is more than just a problem I've noticed within the last 2-3 years!

As much as I would hate having a dash cam (on my work utility truck), I wish I could have had one the other day. I was getting on the on-ramp for the interstate. I noticed a truck and trailer semi that had its hazards on at the end of the on ramp that was stationary in the emergency lane. I had truck and trailer combo in the lane to merge. Luckily, I made the choice to lay up because the truck with hazards on decided to pull out into the on ramp while I was looking to merge. Instead of the truck accelerating in the emergency lane he pulled out into traffic. Dangerous, because while I was looking to merge, I had to look off of the truck with hazards.

By the time I looked back for the truck, he had merged in front of me. Nearly smacked right into the back of him.

Anybody can get a CDL to drive it seems these days.

To get a CDL you should have to be 100% fluent in English at a HS graduate level and be able to both read and write in English.

Anything else is a serious safety hazard.

The biggest misnomer in all of this is the non-stop drum beat of a "driver shortage" which simply is not true.

Public enemy number one is the American Trucking Association (ATA). They are a strongarm lobbying group from the largest carriers in the industry (Swift, JB Hunt, Werner etc.). The name implies they are for truckers but they are not.

For years, they have floated the line of not enough truckers available to move the economy so they have been complicit in the influx of foreign born workers to move freight along with the current push to lower the interstate CDL age to 18 (many states have allowed intrastate 18 year old drivers for years).

The problem looks like there is a shortage but that simply isn't true. It's a churn issue. When most of the large carriers have a turnover rate of 90% plus, they need new bodies to sit behind the wheel. The working conditions at the large carriers makes it difficult to retain quality drivers for more than a couple years.

For the foreigner component, small upstart companies based out of UPS stores/apartments etc obtain US DOT numbers (the "license" to operate as a business) with ease. There are many instances of DOZENS of trucking companies working out of one apartment address or PO Box. If one of the DOT numbers gets placed out of service or loses insurance due to violations, they already have another DOT number ready to go.

Next time you're out on a trip, take a look at the trucks you're passing. If on their door or sleeper they have a cheap, hand written placard with their credentials on it and there is evidence of tape residue all around it, they are possibly operating in bad faith.

Good info. I'm not sure how the job crunch is happening to create the lack of driver situation we're in, and it seems you do, my point still stands that it's not currently set up for a typical US citizen to apply for and get and be happy with their career. And given your info, it's clear a free market (or anything close to it) isn't flowing to support that either.

There are niche companies and situations where people can earn well of course, but by and large I completely agree with your post.

Working conditions at large or "megacarriers" as we call them have only gotten worse over time. At least up until a few years ago, a guy or gal would sign up for a truck driving school and sign a contract where upon graduation, they'd hire on with one of the handful of carriers that was co-opted with that school. The contract was for usually 1 year of service to pay off the schooling. If the new driver quit or got fired, they'd be on the hook for $3000+, and most folks who end up taking this route do not have $3K to spare.

For reference on conditions, and this was 30 years ago, I worked for KLLM out of Jackson, MS in 1996. They put me in a Freightliner that was governed at 58mph and paid me .23 per mile running between Columbus Ohio and California . I did that for 6 months and made roughly $600 per week.

On top of that, the carrier can blacklist you on what's called a DAC Report which is a shared database amongst many carriers. It's your driver credit score. If they put erroneous info in there (which has happened often), getting hired with a new company can be a challenge.

My point was that we need to work on ourselves to become better from within. Not take shortcuts.

Another example of what to do is if one wants to become healthy, just eat right and hit the gym regularly, not take shortcuts like steroids.
