They keeping the scale open more frequently now on I35 south of San Antonio, I hope this is in part why

That part of I35 is like the chase scene from Road Warrior and all the vehicles are semis with 65 MPH governors. Take you life in your own hands. And half the trailers are carrying exchange students.

It is. South Austin is the same. I always take the toll and go around Austin and SA going to and from South Texas or the coast but a few weeks I actually had to go in to SA and I swear it was Road Warrior in an industrialized third world sh** hole.

There are a couple of publicly traded companies working on self driving 18 wheelers. If you think the quality of drivers is a problem, tech might be the answer.

AUR has been public for a while.
Kodiak (KDK) just went public this week.

I've owned AUR for a while. It's been underwhelming, probably going to sell some of it and shift that into KDK to hedge my bets.

Rail system is essentially run by three companies right now thanks to consolidation and mergers. Every time there is another merger, there are ROW abandonments to reduce overhead. That means longer consists and fewer tracks to run on. That also means rail gets more expensive all the time. Rail is great for certain commodities like mining and aggregate. But is kind of sucks for individual freight items.

Only because of the reduction of last-mile spurs.

Running A-lines between major hubs makes sense, but they move to OTR freight to get to smaller hubs. Why not create local jobs?

Self-driving semis will never happen in the wild without endless bankrupting lawsuits. AI is a currently misnomer; it does not exist. Give a computer that can only recall data exclusive control over a 40-ton missile and people will die. Good luck in that lottery.

"Hit" is a very interesting choice of words in that title.

What else will it hit?
That's also not exactly the wild.
It's a railroad without rails. Controlled access I45 between north of Houston & south of Dallas.

They also appear to be running afoul of FMCSA laws on the interstates because they can't deploy warning devices at the proper distance.

Well it's interstate. Other companies are doing I-45 with a back up driver already. I-10 Houston to SA is next, and supposedly fully driverless.

It has finally occurred to me that the trucks I routinely get stuck driving behind in left lane of a "No Trucks in the Left Lane" zone are not just *******s, but rather they're *******s who can't read English. I know Captain Obvious, but it's a problem getting worse all the time and that's a reasonable explanation.

ALARMING: An exhausted non-citizen truck driver from Mexico was found ASLEEP on the side of the interstate in Clarksville, AR! This driver violated hours of service rules, was driving in "personal conveyance" mode, couldn't speak English, and had NO WORK VISAonly a B1/B2 tourist visa.

What's INSANE? He's 700 miles from the border, hauling a load from Mississippi to OklahomaNOT a cross-border shipment. This is straight-up CABOTAGE violation, illegal for foreign drivers!

Arkansas Highway Police? ZERO training on thisthey didn't even question the Border Crossing Card or why he's running domestic loads. Even worse, the Arkansas Highway Police chief actively worked with the Arkansas Trucking Association against legislation in this year's legislative session that would have banned the use of B1/B2 tourist visas for truck drivers in the state of Arkansas. If this happened in Oklahoma, ICE would've been called immediately. But Arkansas isn't cooperating with ICE, so they just dropped him at a hotel with a slap-on-the-wrist warning for English proficiency.

This is a massive safety riskexhausted illegal drivers on our roads? Wake up, America! Who's protecting our highways?

There is a great post on this over at Ace Of Spades HQ.

Read the whole thing.

Quote:

With immigration authorities and regulatory agencies targeting any trucks on the road in violation of federal regulations, massive fraud is being revealed, including:

Carriers bring foreign truck drivers in on tourist visas, have them drive for 90 days, at which time they leave and are replaced by another driver on the 90-day cycle. Per Craig Fuller, "Entire fleet business models [are] built around this."

Eastern European drivers are being brought in by organized crime syndicates from their home countries, and operating with little understanding or respect for US laws.

Because of the crackdown, alien truckers are starting to ditch their trucks along highways, leaving them for the trucks' owners to come pick up.
ICE and cooperating police agencies are aggressively patrolling truck stops.

Carriers that rely on cheap foreign truck drivers are reporting massive absenteeism. Per Mr. Fuller, "This is going to destroy entire business models. Trucking companies only survive through cashflows of running freight. They are toast if this goes on."

Truck stop parking lots are suddenly much emptier than normal.

ICE is also showing up at businesses where shipments are loaded and unloaded, verifying that the truckers have legitimated CDLs. Shippers therefore are becoming proactive in ensuring that only legal drivers are backing up to their warehouse docks, and refusing to load or receive shipments from non-compliant drivers.

Trucking companies and freight brokers are being advised by legal counsel to immediately cease working with non-US domiciled truck drivers and those who lack a legal United States CDL. Mr. Fuller quotes one of them as telling him, "Plaintiff attorneys will scorch any broker or carrier for hiring an illegitimate driver."

Insurance companies are likely to refuse to provide insurance going forward for companies unless they prohibit the hiring of truck drivers lacking US-domiciled CDLs.
