Will the college kids on spring break in Cabo be safe if they still go?

Were to Cabo 2 years ago and we felt safe in the resort. We ventured out to downtown one day and the taxi driver was telling us the cartels owned all the tourist shops and it was a front for drugs. We had lots of people asking us if we wanted pot, coke etc but we ignored them and they didnt follownus. The bay area was fine with the tourist boats. Definately changed though with the vibe.

We've been going to Cabo for years now. Even have a stupid timeshare after too many bloody mary's one morning.

We'd always stay close to the resort or golf course. Always felt safe, but I think that is more a product of how sequestered away Cabo is compared to all the resorts on the Yucatan side.

I'd 100% support sending in ground troops to Mexico to support their government if they are serious about rooting up the cartels. This would only help America and Mexico in the long run.

It's just whack a mole. Kill one and another will take their place. I'm good with killing them, but I don't expect any long term benefit or mitigation. Mexico is what it is.

As with all things supply and demand. Drug dealers wouldn't have as much influence and whatever if Americans didn't keep giving them business.

But, hey, we have our war on drugs. Sure, it's been almost fifty years, but any day now it'll stop all the ills drugs have on Americans.
There are in fact two things, science and opinion; the former begets knowledge, the later ignorance. Hippocrates

Nobody knows the answer to that question, and anybody who claims to know is talking out of their ass. This may blow over in another day and everything will be fine. Or it may escalate into the govt going after the groups that went after the NG. If it escalates, nobody knows how long it goes on or where it extends to. I personally wouldn't go down there right now, nor would I allow family members to go.

ICE is part of the operation as a whole but not sure about this specifically. ICE had to get rid of the key cartel people in the US before this operation to limit cartel revenge attacks.

Super interesting take, and something I hadn't even thought of. Makes total sense that we would need to get as many criminals out that we know are linked directly to cartel before we would take on this type of operation.

Safety/risk is relative - each of us has our own tolerance for what risks we take and what level of risk we see as acceptable. Just look at all the Canadians afraid to travel to the US right now at how wide of a risk range people think is ok/not-ok.

This coming from the person who ran for president basically unopposed because the Cartel killed the other 37 candidates.

Seen several people report the Mexico army and navy were working with the USA and not their own president to kill the leader of CJNG. I don't think this is going to be a 48-72 hour war.

I also think everything happening the past month is all connected. We have known since around 2012 that Hezbollah and the cartels have been training together in south America in places like Venezuela. Venezuela has known links to China, Russia, and Iran. The cartels have been probing the border with drones and come to find out they sent people to Ukraine to learn drone warfare.

I would not be surprised if taking down Maduro starting this domino effect. Both Venezuela and Iran lost a lot of money that day, the USA is putting a lot of pressure on Iran, the cartels try something around the border and we have to shut airspace down, and now the USA is working directly with the Mexican military without approval of their president.

Crazy times

Official word is the US military helped the out. Word on the street is that ICE was deep into this.

ICE??

If it's former Delta guys that are now civilian operators for the CIA the press releases can say "No US military on the ground".

Bit false here. They aren't coming because it's more of a protest against Trump. That's been widely reported.

Until they go full El Salvador

This is the only solution. It's a harsh solution, but the only real solution. Until the Mexican govt is ready to go full Bukele style, this will all continue.

That's what we thought about Al queda and isis, but we shut their trap… now, it took trillions and decades though.

Cartels sell their product world wide. This isn't just an America issue. And you're never going to get rid of the demand for drugs. It's literally impossible. It's like saying we can get rid of homelessness if we just gave them all houses. It's a meaningless platitude and not a real solution.

Has there actually been any US citizens hurt, killed, or kidnapped - or has it been strictly cartel/military/police violence. Interwebs say yes but News seems pretty chaotic as well as the chances of innocents getting caught in crossfire has greatly increased.

Best case and most likely scenrio, your daughter goes, the wedding party has taken precautions, she has her head on a swivel, nothing horrible happens and she has a lifetime of memories of the wedding and the situation as a whole, good and bad. Worst case scenario, she dies in absolute terror and emmense pain. We tend here in most of America to think, "that can't/won't happen to me." All lot of mes who thought that found out that it could.

I've been all over MX as well. Oaxaca, Queretaro, Guadalajara, Tequila, Colima, Nayarit. Guadalajara is the only place I felt uneasy/didn't want to wander off by myself. I do very much enjoy visiting Mexico and also think that is wildly exaggerated as a super dangerous place. With that said, I wouldn't be visiting any time in the next few months with all of this happening.

I know, telling people to listen to a podcast on here is probably not gonna happen, but ironically, I listened to this on the Way to the coast last week. This guy is a cartel expert and he actually goes over this exact scenario with the new generation cartel. They have their own private "tanks" brigades and have sent people to Ukraine to study drone technology. It's really worth the listen because he all but predict this, but doesn't have any idea how it ends.

I watched this podcast when it came out originally. Yeah the cartels are already using drones to drop bombs on their rivals. Videos of it all over the internet.
….

I am just asking, could it be Mexican government or someone else using drone and blaming rival cartels? Pardon my ignorance.
We really need to rewrite our laws concerning libel and slander.

Yes there has, quite a few times. My company has a travel ban to Mexico for this reason. Largest recent attacks were on Mormons in 2023. But it's not atypical for someone to get picked up by the cartels

It's been pretty well documented drug traffickers from all over Latin America have gone to Ukraine. There they sign up with the foreign legion to receive training and then travel back. I don't know if Ukraine is purposely complicit, but cartel members are definitely getting drone training there.

Are you nuts. She should not have been going before this all happened if you read American Consulate Website. I don't think we are going to rescue a bunch of people paying no attention to the warnings for the last 12 plus years. Americans have been getting kidnapped and targeted way before all of this. Put you head in the sand if you wish. Zimbabwe is considered safe by the consulate keep that in mind. Americans have been advised for a long time to not travel to Mexico under any circumstances.

If this is truly Mexico's stance, we should immediately put a 100% tariff on all remittances to Mexico, ban all American tourism to Mexico, and cut them off from any U.S. funding or support. We cannot tolerate having a narco state on our southern border.

Make her understand she's worried about the wrong entity.
