Figured someone local needed to start this up.

Have you made plans yet? Gone to Costco for supplies? What items are you stocking up on to get through the weekend?

Feel free to post pics etc once things get western round here.

I have done nothing but locate my hose bib covers in storage. Otherwise, I don't get frenzied when there's a short bit of weather that's as cold as the panhandle gets all the time.

Planning to pick up some firewood so we can get the fireplace going for the first time this winter, and regular groceries to avoid having to go many places. That's about it.

the independent weather people seem a bit unsure about how bad it will get this far south with the ice.

Will hook up freeze misers this week.

That's my only prep.

I am really kicking myself for not including a fireplace in our new home, though.

Does anybody remember how much precipitation we got here in CS during the ice storm in '21? When so many had roof leaks from ice dams forming on the roof. I have a new roof now but my confidence level is low.

It wasn't the precip but the extended freezing temperatures as I recall.

I dont think any school will be canceled.
This thing is not gonna make it far enough south to have any major impact in our area.

The panic buying will be comical as always.
Nothing wrong with being prepared but BCS is home to some of the highest levels of panic buying imaginable.

apparently there were two events in 2021 but my brain has blanked out one of them. January had 5 inches of snow and in February it got really cold with .25 inches of ice accumulation and the rolling power outages. If google is to be trusted.

It doesn't look like it is going to get as brutally cold as it did.

A quick google search popped this up, no idea how accurate but I remember it being below freezing for awhile.

The February 2021 winter storm (Winter Storm Uri) brought historic,, sub-freezing temperatures, ice, and snow to the Bryan-College Station area, causing a massive, week-long power crisis and infrastructure failure. The freezing conditions lasted for over a week, with 86 hours officially recorded at or below 32F, impacting the area from February 11 to February 20, 2021.
Key Impacts on Bryan-College Station:
Record Cold: The coldest morning was February 16, with temperatures dropping to roughly 5F at Easterwood Airport and as low as -1F in nearby areas like Hearne/Centerville. On Feb. 15, the high was only 20F, and on Feb. 16, the high was 27F, setting records for the coldest maximum temperatures.

I remember going to the Fitch HEB back in 2016 when we had a winter storm, the can food section was cleaned out like we were preparing for a nuclear attack. I am pretty sure my family could survive for a least a week with what we have in our home.

Yes , There were 2 different storms in 2021.
First one hit on January 10, 2021 and we got snow and ice.
2nd one hit on Feb 15, 2021 and was more impactful than the 1st dumping quite a bit of snow.
Source - My phone camera roll. 2nd storm produced much more snow than the 1st storm

HEB is gonna get some of my money

I plan to make a corned beef, a pot of chili, a pot of suga, chicken and dumplings and a couple pots of beans and some other cold weather staples just to beat the cold.

Yeah that sounds right. My problem was those brutal few hours when freezing rain fell like crazy and formed an ice dam in one of the valleys on my roof. Don't ever want to see that again.

Panic buying always puts a damper on my normal grocery routine. These freezes always seem to hit right about my normal grocery store timing.

Spare some thoughts for the utility workers this weekend in BCS. They are going to be very busy with whatever ice related outages they can address.

1.10.21 Took out my neighbors trees

2.15.21 dumped near a foot of snow on us

Glad I installed a frost-proof hydrant a couple of years ago. No need to worry about it freezing when we get a spell like this.

I don't remember the exact amount but that is the very reason I have always put ice and water underlayment in valleys on every roof I install. It cost about $200-400 more per roof to install but it is cheap insurance.

Cheap roofers skip this step and sometimes it can come back to haunt the homeowner.
I did see snow inside of attics from the wind blowing it through ridge vents on metal roofs then.

A&M has released their email to system faculty staff & students. They're monitoring the situation and will close different campuses around the state as needed.

Yeah I know that and they were supposed to do that but I wasn't around to observe at that time of installation. As I said my confidence level is low. Too late now anyway. Fingers crossed.

Do you know what company put the roof on ?

Was it installed after 2021 ?

Interesting watching the Wolf Family Farms guy from the POM farm market post how he's trying to protect his crops. Sending all good thoughts to farmers and ranchers that their plants and animals make it through this.

It was put on 5 or 6 months ago. I'd rather not say who it was they're a close friend of my son-in-law and I had a hard time with them.

If you are using the freeze misers for the first time, make sure you put them on today or tomorrow. You can't put them on properly once the temperature drops. They are designed to work when the temperature drops, not after it drops.
